One of my favorite items to eat whenever I'm in Japan is the simple onigiri. That wonderful triangle shaped rice with various fillings always makes me smile. Yes, there is a very popular onigiri take away place in Hong Kong that I do frequent often. That was until I came across Fukuzen Bento. Located in Wanchai, right next to Lee Tung Avenue is a very small take away shop that is owned by a Japanese couple. It's very small but they do have a tiny bench for eating if you decide to dine in.
The shop has a tiny display of the food. Everything is labelled in Chinese and English and there is no 10% service charge. Though what type of onigiri they have on display may not be what they have prepared that day. Do ask what they have available.
They have sets. I decided to go with set B. A mix onigiri and a seaweed onigiri with two pieces of karaage for $34.
The karaage is reheated over the stove when I ordered it and a bit of Kewpie mayo was added. The chicken was ok. Tasted fine but it wasn't spectacular.
The onigiri, on the other hand, was quite good. I chose a nori version and a mentaiko version. the nori onigiri was ok. Could have used a bit more seasoning but it was fine. The rice was soft and sticky. Just how I love my rice.
The mentaiko was fabulous. The onigiri was stuffed with the filling! Something that I find sadly missing in other Hong Kong onigiri shops. The mentaiko was a bit spicy but not too much. Loved how I could get mouthfuls of this with every bit of rice. The nori wrapping was crunchy. My favorite combination.
Great tiny place with not too expensive prices. I will be back!
