翰林茶馆 (English name: Hanlin Tea Room) from Taipei, Taiwan, claims to be the originator of bubble tea. I came across this in a recent trip to Taipei where I tried it. It was possibly the most expensive cup of bubble tea I had in Taipei and one of the worst. When I told my friend's wife who is Taiwanese, she just eyerolled and said the place was over rated. When it opened in Hong Kong, I wasn't very keen to give it a try. When it opened in Hong Kong, I wasn't very keen to give it a try. Being one of the worst bubble teas I've had in Taipei, I didn't have much faith in transferring well in Hong Kong. So, now you may ask, am I doing writing a review that I ate here?
You see, I was in Tsim Sha Tsui an stuck with what to eat. I was hungry and it seemed every where had long queues. So, boyfriend and I just said why not? Let's just sit and eat anywhere. And that was here.
Located in Harbor City, Tsim Sha Tsui, it is a small but spacious dining area. They even have a take away counter for drinks only. Dining in has a 10% service charge. Menu is in English and Chinese.
Along with drinks, they have sets meals. As it was dinner time, we received the dinner set that includes a snack, main, dessert and set drink. Or upgrade to another drink for $5. We decided to go with the dinner sets.
The snack was a deep fried squid ball. It tasted ok but was super oily.
The upgraded my set drink to a Panda Bubble Milk Tea with Fresh Milk ($5). Boyfriend didn't upgrade and only chose the Tie Guan Yin Milk Tea that was part of the set. Mine was clearly the better deal as the drink costs $38 on it's own. The Panda Bubbles were actually two different kinds: a small white version and a black larger version. Boba wasn't very sweet but at least soft and chewy without being mushy. The tea was pretty good, too. A nice balance of milk and tea without either being overcompensated. This was better than the cup I had in Taipei where the tea base was nonexistent. Surprised I am! It wasn't as good as the good ones in Hong Kong or the ones charging in this same price range but it was a far cry better than the one I had in Taipei that was charging more than the others around them.
Boyfriend claimed he wanted to lose weight and wanted to eat less so he ordered a Noodles Mixed with Scallion ($98). The staff warned it was spicy though it wasn't mentioned in the menu. And it was exactly that. Very spicy. The noodles used Tian Guan Yin tea so it was brown in color. It was nice chewy texture. The sauce was good though a bit spicy.
I had the fried pork chop with noodle ($118). They also used the same tea noodles here. I loved the chewy texture. It was smooth though could not detect any tea flavor. Understandable really. I can never taste the ones that say the use green tea. The broth was ok. Clear and not too salty.
The pork chop was fried nicely and not too oily.
Sets came with dessert and this was almond milk. A bit different than the Cantonese version which is a lot thicker. This was very watery and grainier. It also had a layer of almond oil on top.
Food was ok. Better than expected and I had seriously low expectations of it. The tea was better than what I had in Taipei. It was not great but a whole lot better than what I had in Taipei. I'd be back especially since this place never seems to have a line.
