Pumpernickel is one of the first few cafés that I’ve known when my dessert addiction started to form. The cakes and bread at the former Arts Centre branch looked so attractive to the then student me. A colleague had also admired the quality of the homemade bread made with natural yeast. Now that so many novel take of coffee and dessert café come and go in town, Pumpernickel has only the very first café left. This tucked away location perches a few steps above street level so it was a nice vantage
This tucked away location perches a few steps above street level so it was a nice vantage point to watch the traffic go by on a bright Sunday afternoon. We arrived just after lunch hour so managed to take a table by the full height window. The place looked old somewhat, more like a neighbourhood café than some selfie destination.
I was thrilled to see they have scone tea set, and hubby chose “The Classical” all-day English breakfast set. I was expecting big hearty scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, only to find the scones to be quite small, just a bit bigger than the pots holding the cream and jam, which was merely whipping cream and normal potted jam. Though disappointed, it was unreasonable to expect hotel quality in a café. The raisin scone was buttery and crumbly, while the cheese one was savory and a bit too salty. It would be better value for money to add a scone to a breakfast set rather than having a scone set.
Hubby added the daily carrot soup to his set. The butter toast that went with the soup was remarkably dense with a hint of nut texture and rich in flavor. Then the big breakfast plate came with a burst of colors. I had a bite of everything and enjoyed the homemade sausage and raisin toast. The baked beans were also enriched with HP sauce.
Greedy me ordered a piece of carrot cake to go with the coffee to round off the meal. I am a big fan of this American sweet treat. The cake was a bit on the dry side, but still delivered well on the rich nutty texture and big kick of cheese layers.
The price was not cheap, but the bread was worth coming for.
