I have a dumpling fantasy. The best dumpling place I have eaten in is a small, but famous place in Beijing called Mr Shi's. It is now the pinnacle of dumpling for me. My fantasy is that one day I will visit somewhere that trumps Mr Shi's. While this didn't happen here, I left feeling very happy and talking excidedly about their dumplings. It is a busy little place that serves the neighbourhood. It is a busy little place that serves the neighbourhood. The young guy there seated us at one of the three big tables after a few minutes and gave us the simplified English menu. It is a four step guide. 1. choose dumpling - pork with either chives, cabbage or chinese cabbage. 2. How many - 7 or 10. 3. In soup or fried. 4. Eat in or take away.
We chose 7 Chinese cabbage dumplings in soup and 7 fried chive dumplings. The boiled dumplings were so good. They a slippery and glistening, yet maintain their integrity. With some vinegar and their awesome chili sauce (with black bean and pickled vegetable in there) they were a sensation. The dough is a perfect thickness and has a good chew to it.
The fried dumplings came out and they were great. The crispy exterior gave way to a juicy filling and with the same condiments, they just knocked our socks off. Both dumplings had a very good green to meat ratio, and were generally very well balanced.
The total was 53 dollars - an absolute bargain. It is a little out of the way, but totally worth the trip. All of the dumplings are made fresh to order and you can see this happening right in front of you. The guy and the ladies who run the place were very nice and helpful. I am already looking forward to our next visit.
