Whenever we talk about the best steakhouse in Hong Kong, the Steakhouse Wine Bar + Grill at Intercontinental is always mentioned. Being crowned the Steak King, I finally got the chance to try the steak house since HSBC Premier Visa Card is offering a 20% discount on every al la carte items which is an amazing deal that cannot be missed!

The steakhouse has a similar settings and ambience to any other good steakhouse in Hong Kong - it is spacious, grand but causal at the same time. The very attribute that makes the Steak House stands out is their charcoal grill, which is the one and only charcoal grill in Hong Kong. Despite that they are also known for the topnotch services and the eclectic selection of knives, steaks and condiments! I will explain more in below.

Our dining experience started with a glowing menu in the dark! I absolutely love this menu, I finally found no difficulties in reading a menu at a restaurant under dim lighting! The waiters were all very experience and attentive. They made several recommendations on every courses, and explainded the steaks differences in details. Not for long, we made our decisions for tonight.

After a while, the bread basket and the small grissini were served and they were awesome! I was planning to save my stomach for my dishes but I could not help indulging in the baguette and grissini. We were given the choice between unsalted and salted butter, with no doubt I picked the salted butter and smeared lots on my bread.

A waitress walked over with a tray of knives for our selection. She explained them one by one, we asked for the main difference among the knives, she told us they are all pretty similar so we can just picked by instinct. I picked the red one as it looks edgy.

Seared Hokkaido Scallop & Apple Wood Bacon
For appetiser, we have the seared Hokkaido scallop & Apple Wood bacon. The Hokkaido scallop was pan seared to give a smokey edge. It was sweet, smooth and tender at the same time. The pairing with thickly cut Applewood Bacon and pineapple sauce was refreshing and delicious! I quite like this appetiser.

A few minutes after, a waitress came over with an elongated plate of exotic rock salts. She made a brief introduction of the salts and gave recommendations on which salt is good to pair with what kind of dishes. Hmmm complicated, she left the whole plate to us for tasting for the rest of the evening.

Rib Eye Cap Meat + Duck Foie Gras
We only ordered one steak to share as everything is huge in portion. The waiter already informed us the rib eye would be sliced upon serving when we made our order. I did not understand the reason behind it, but I was not very excited when I saw my steak sliced when served. Anyhow the rib eye cap meat was beautifully grilled with a nice charred and crispy rim. The rib eye was quite succulent with good chewiness. Yet I would not say this is the best stead I have ever had.

My Friend M had not ever tried foie gras before, so I ordered this for her. I regretted ordering it after my first bite. The foie gras was not well seared, the sides lack the burnt aroma and taste. Even the foie gras was fatty and smooth, it did not taste great.

Another waiter brought us a gigantic plate of mustard for selection. It's either the waiter were mumbling the names or they were too difficult to pronounce, I could not really understand him. This time, they did not leave the whole tray to us. I picked wholewheat and French mustard, a typical choice from me.

Cream Corn

The cream corn was quite yummy but not as creamy or flavourful as the one at Strip House by Harlans. The one at Harlans is the best corn on earth.

Exotic Alaska
We ordered our dessert right at the start of our dinner as we were told it needs 30 minutes preparation time. We had the Exotic Alaska because M had never tried Baked Alaska once in her life!

The Baked Alaska is GIGANTIC in size and probably can feed 6 people or more for dessert. A flaming brandy was pour on top to give an extra burnt to the beaten egg whites. The egg white were crispy and warm on the outside while keeping inner fluffy and light. Within the baked Alaska was cakes and scoops of ice-cream. The contrast of warm and cold was nice, and the sweetness was well balanced. This baked Alaska was delicious!

Even though the rib eye cap meat was good, it is not the best steak I have had in Hong Kong. Perhaps I didn't chose the right steak that the steakhouse bar + grill does best, but given my budget the cap meat is what I can currently afford. For the same price, I would rather go to Ruth Chris Steakhouse for a nice piece of buttery fillet mignon. The dessert is worth a visit though, no wonder my foodie friends have been going for dessert all the time.
