We came here for our regional company dinner tonight. 12 overseas colleagues and myself. One from Shanghai so I was very interested in what he thought of the meal.

We started off with a few cold starters: cold ham cubes, ma lan tau salad, mock goose, strange tasting chicken and braise beef with tendon washed down with Chinese and local beers and soft drinks. Everyone liked the salad, they thought the cube ham looked like it came out of a can but tasted better and the beef tendon was not as popular as the other dishes.

Prawns in duck egg yolk, the prawns were very fresh and crispy but not everyone was used to salted duck egg yolks but I thought it was a good representation of the dish

Sweet and Sour fish with pine nuts is always a favourite for Westerners and they enjoyed it especially when the pieces were deboned for us. It was fried well and crispy under the sauce

Fried beef in spring onions, a bit boring for me as a local but well understood by visitors and popular, I didn't have any

Chicken in wonton casserole soup was light and fragrant. The wontons were very nice with the meat remaining very tender and juicy. I like

Deep fried Heung So Duck with deep fried crab sticks, fish on rice crispy pieces. This is like a dish I have had at the Chekiang Club in Central except it is duck instead of chicken. This was a huge dish. By this time, we were all going a bit slow.

Pea shoot with braised whole mushrooms. This dish was really nice, maybe because pea shoot are in season and it was not over done. The vegetable was very green and sweet tasting. I had quite a lot even though I was full by now

Fried meat buns. Ah, my Shanghai colleague told me that in Shanghai, they fry the buns upside down as the top is thick and if fried becomes crispy and when not fried as in the HK versions, it is quite thick and doughy. He is right, of course

Steam vegetable dumpling. Our non meat eating boss thought this was the best dish and although came at the end, he had 2. I had one and think it is one of the best I have had anywhere in HK

Ma Sa glutinous dumplings. Most people liked these although a few thought they got stuck in their mouths. Some had more than one. I don't think they are very good as they are not bigger than the soup variety.

We definitely over ordered as we had a few small vegetarian dishes as well. We had to meet a minimum of $2800 for food cost to get the room. My Shanghai colleague said they do not have strange taste chicken in Shanghai but the rest of the dishes were quite good, not the fried buns though done upside down.

It was a successful evening and everyone was quite relaxed and happy. I had to pack up the remaining food to take home as it would otherwise be too wasteful.
