Came here on a saturday night and the place was packed! The clientele was quite interesting, ranging from a big table with 3 generations to young adults in their 20s (who were quite noisy) to older adults in their 40s. The overall decor was clean and tidy, although the relatively small place meant anyone speaking loudly could be heard by everyone...We ordered the set dinner with wine parings, it was a 5 course meal with 5 glasses of wine for 398 per person. We ordered the set dinner with wine parings, it was a 5 course meal with 5 glasses of wine for 398 per person. Unfortunately I don't quite remember the names of the wines and didn't take any pictures...so I'll try my best.
1st appetizer: parma ham with melon served with some mesclun drizzled with olive oil and balsamic. The ham was sliced a bit too thinly in my opinion, resulting in the piece of melon being a bit too big and the flavors didn't match that well. This was paired with a light white wine that was quite fruity and went well with the ham and melon, but not really with the oil and vinegar. If the ham was a bit thicker or longer, this would have been much better.
2nd appetizer: had a choice between poached salmon or grilled prawn, we ordered one of each to try. Both the salmon and prawn were served atop some mashed potatoes and sauteed zucchini and cucumbers. While I was a bit disappointed with the 1st dish, this one immediately saved the day. The salmon was extremely moist and tender with lots of flavor, and the prawn was very fresh and cooked just right. Even the veggies were very tasty and the mashed potatoes had a strong potato flavor that you don't usually get with potatoes in HK. Both were paired with white wines, the one for the salmon was lighter in flavor to match the fish (probably semillon or sauv blanc) while the prawn was stronger in flavor (i think it was a chardonnay). This goes to show that the food/wine pairings were really done with thought and care and was very much appreciated
Next up, foie gras! The foie gras was served with a balsamic reduction drizzled on top, together with some poached apples and mesclun. The foie gras was pan fried just right, crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside. The piece itself wasn't too big which was fine for me, but those who love foie gras may want more! The red wine paired with the foie gras was quite decent, the tannins able to cut through the oily taste.
Main course: had a choice between beef sirloin or lamb chops wrapped in a pastry. Again we ordered both to try, the beef was medium rare as requested but was only warm when it reached us. The meat itself was on par, and would have been better if it was hotter. The lamb chops in pastry was better, the lamb was tender and juicy and the pastry thin and light. The lamb came with a merlot I think while the beef came with a cab sauv, both matched the food well, again well though out pairings.
Cheese course: Personally I enjoyed it alot but I found this an interesting decision as I would expect most HK people would probably prefer regular dessert than cheese. Anyway, it came with 4 sets of cheese, a brie, a garlic chive cream cheese, a goat cheese and a blue cheese, all served on crackers with some grapes. The cheese were all very good, and the wine they choose had a very full body that went well with the cheese.
The only complaint for the evening was that the amount of wine given for each course was quite little, you could practically finish each glass in one gulp. Bread was also not given...when asked, they actually said bread would cost extra?! I would rather they charge more for the meal and be more generous with the bread/food/wine etc.
Also I think alot more people would choose the set if they 1. split the food and the wine out i.e. say 350 for the set dinner and add 50 to get the wine pairings, and 2. have a choice between dessert vs cheese.
Overall I think the set dinner with wine is an excellent deal, good food and decent wine at very decent prices.
