Ding Dim Sum 1968 is a restaurant that serves dim sum and dim sum only, day and night. So you can have your dim sum fix any time of the hour. I've been to quite a few of these throughout Hong Kong. So, decided to try this one out with boyfriend as it was located in Central.

Prices are not expensive. Considering this is in Central, that's a rarity. Menu is check off list where you check of what you want. Menu is in English and Chinese. There are a few special items that are not listed on the menu and those are in Chinese only and are listed on a chalkboard on the wall. Place is nothing fancy. Just simple chairs and tables. Tea is found in not given in a tea pot but in a big Thermos pot. There is a $3 tea charge but no 10% service charge.

Pan Fried Pumpkin Pancakes ($34). This is one of the items written on the chalkboard instead of on the menu. The pumpkin also was mixed with some fish meat and corn nibblets. A combination I like a lot.

Fried Dumplings with Shrimp and Foie Gras ($30). This was a lot a shrimp and not much taste of foie gras. However, it was ok as the shrimp was really fresh and tasted really great.

Baked Pastry BBQ Pork Buns ($30). The buns were very sweet. Actually, this whole dish was very sweet. A bit sweeter than most BBQ pork buns I've ever had. But the buns were soft and fluffy which I liked a lot.

Buddha Tofu Skin Rolls ($27). These also had shrimp in them and were quite good. Though a bit oily.

Spring Rolls with Scrambled Egg Whites ($30). A curious item we ordered. The spring rolls were stuffed with scrambled egg whites so it was odd without the usual filling. But it did taste ok.

Siu Mai With Crab Roe ($30). After all the fried stuff my boyfriend chose, I was really happy to have something that wasn't fried! The siu mai were pretty good. Again there was a lot of shrimp added and the shrimp was really good.

I found it surprising that not only were the modern dim sum good, but the classic versions like the siu mai were also good. Something I found rare as most all day dim sum places are good in the more modern versions but when it comes to classic versions, they are usually not too good. I would return again.
