In my quest to visit more of the older, underhyped cha chan tengs in town, I came across Sun Kwong Nam, in Mong Kok.

The decor is what you'd expect from an old place like this - if you eat at a lot of cafes, you'll be instantly familiar with the style.

Service is also what you'd expect - prompt, not impolite.

Despite their claims of being a curry specialist, we decided to get our favourite cha chan teng food - baked dishes!

They had 2 types of baked pork chop - one with normally grilled pork chops, and one with deep fried cutlets. We opted for the cutlet version - I've only had it at one other restaurant in Richmond BC, and it was my favourite dish at ANY restaurant.

It was actually quite good - the sauce is greasy but not as bad as some places I've been to. The pork was tender and crispy, but they use a little too much batter.

We also ordered a baked chicken steak. It comes with a similar sauce, but with a more zesy flavour, and with onions. The sauce was delicious and, and will make you want to eat every last bite of rice. The chicken was a bit over-seasoned, but not bad.

The portions were good, but the prices weren't. We ordered from the main menu, so they were over $40 per dish, plus the 'cold drink' fee.

Speaking of the drinks, they were nothing to write home about. I had a yin yeung, and it was extremely sweet, and the coffee was strong but not very fresh. The coffee/tea ratio was a bit off (too much coffee, not enough tea fragrance). We also ordered an iced lemon tea with 'less sugar' but they apparently didn't hear us because it was also very sweet.

Overall, I will come back - I definitely want to try the curry! This isn't somewhere I'd want to eat regularly, but it's a great treat if you're in the mood for some HK style comfort food.
Like everything else, the soup was greasy
