For me, Indian food is something I seldom eat. Going to Hong Kong Island is also something I seldom do. This time's review is all about unfamiliar grounds. Sometimes it is about doing something different. Off to Basmati Restaurant!Basmati is conveniently located near the Sheung Wan MTR. Basmati is conveniently located near the Sheung Wan MTR. When I say 'near', it actually takes less than an minute to spot the restaurant's signboard. Spacious, the restaurant has a long counter for buffet and other purposes. I have made a reservation for three thinking it may be hard to have a seat, but only two tables were occupied when we arrived. It was rather empty and quiet in there.
To begin our tasting adventure, we ordered two not-so-Indian lime-Perriers ($42 each) and one mango Lassi (yogurt-based drink - $36). The owner offered us snacks on the house.

For main dishes, we chose Beef Madras ($85), Butter Chicken ($85) and Saag Palak Paneer (spinach dish with Paneer cheese - $82). I enjoyed the chicken and the beef the best because the meat was tender. The taste of Saag Paneer was a little strong. Best eat it with the naan rather than the Pullau Rice ($33). The rice was cooked in a mix of spices resulting in a 'spice clash' when combined with saag paneer. I am not a fan of strong flavours so this is all personal opinion.
Towards the end, we also got complimentary dessert. We were not sure what was in each compartment, except for the coffee candies, but the box reminded us of Chinese "Tong Guo" box we use during the New Year.
The food was good and the service as well. The waiter knew when to refill our cups of water without being asked. He was attentive and courteous. I hope this positiveness will remain when the restaurant becomes busier.
