. .After strolling around Grand Century Place, I came upon Garden street in Mongkok and remembered that was a bakery here designed in a traditional Hong Kong café motif. However since Garden’s street shops are in front of the eateries there, and I had no sense of direction, I had to use openrice’s map option to guide me around. Actually, I’ve used
After strolling around Grand Century Place, I came upon Garden street in Mongkok and remembered that was a bakery here designed in a traditional Hong Kong café motif. However since Garden’s street shops are in front of the eateries there, and I had no sense of direction, I had to use openrice’s map option to guide me around. Actually, I’ve used this option quite frequently to point me in the right direction…
Finally I was able to find the old traditional bakery I was looking for [kee tsui cake shop], with their distinctive red font on their outside sign display. Their simplistic interior design includes the old white long fluorescent lights on the ceiling with the hanging down light bulbs for lightening. Also, there are fans for cooling as well. The place had bamboo molds to make Chinese pastries and the walls were styled with magazines cutouts.
kee tsui cake shop’s most well known eatery is the red bean pancake. You can either buy the pancake with the red bean paste filling for $4 each/$16 for 5, or the no filling ones for $3 each/$13 for 5. You can see the photo I have taken which one I prefer the most. Usually around 6pm, both types of pancake are only down to 4 pieces, which is why I hurryingly got one right away. As to other choices of pancake, there were [皮蛋酥、合桃酥、鮑魚酥、摩囉酥、老婆餅]; for the snacks, there were [蛋散、牛耳仔、雞仔餅及炒米餅], so quite a lot of variety and the price was very reasonable. For the pricing of the snacks, it was $40 per “catty” or about 600g for each serving. For the pancakes, most of it was $4 per piece, with discounts after the purchase of more than 4 pieces. To have these kind of prices in a high rent area such as Mongkok, not to mention the old cafe style atmosphere, this place is a rare gem in Hong Kong.
Red Bean Pancake($4 each;$16 for 5)
When you lift this piece of pastry into your hands, the first feeling is its soft and roundness, with the thin layer of dried sticky rice coating hinting the red paste filling and the small amount of sesame seeds on top, this common masterpiece will melt in your mouth with it's traditional taste. Even though it's soft on the outside.
Non-filling Pancakes ($3 each, $12 for 5)
From my experiences of eating the abovementioned red bean pancake, often it may get too sweet after them, so the non-filling pancakes was a good tasting on some traditional pancakes, I would recommend this for those who want to try something not so sweet. The non-filling pancakes has a quite a different taste than the red bean paste. There are still sesame coating on the pancake, but without the red bean paste filling, you get a more sesame taste.
[Mo Lor Show] ($4 each, $13 for 4)
This type of Mo Lor Show is a bit rounder compare to the typical ones, so it feels you are getting more of pastry. The outer coating has a coffee coloured texture with small cracks, making it look like a similar pastry, the pineapple bun. When you rip open parts of this pastry, the coating will come off, and it's quite a soft taste. The inside of has a bit of green melon and coconut taste, with a bit of saltiness from it. When you enjoy this pastry, there is no hint of overcooking at all.
The fact is cafe, bakery or other traditional style eateries are decreasing over the years. I think it could be because these old shops are forgotten or business isn't going well, or the pressure of rent is simply makes them unsustainable. So that's why for these old food places, if you can find one, especially those that still has the traditional atmosphere and the aged workers, you ought to give these places since they're working so hard to keep up the tradition!
