Fukuro is a restaurant under Black Sheep Restaurants that brings the public dining experiences in a Japanese izakaya with western twist. Situated in Soho, Central, Fukuro uses a night owl as its logo, alluding to its concept of being a spirited and hip place for visitors to relax and cut off from the reality.Here we enjoyed the casual vibe and music, as well as being served by the unpretentious and friendly staff. Here we enjoyed the casual vibe and music, as well as being served by the unpretentious and friendly staff. It was a pity that their signature wagyu sando was already sold out when we arrived at 19:30 though.

Hands down their signature butter corn and it was our favourite dish of the evening. Despite the high expectations after reading all the good reviews, we were still astonished by how delicious it was. The butter and caramel crispy glaze had given off ambrosial aroma and were satisfyingly buttery with appropriate sweetness.

𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲

✽ 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗲, $𝟭𝟲𝟴 (𝟴/𝟭𝟬)
The tartare was mixed with wasabi relish and charred shallot that gave extra spice and depth to the flavour of the tartare. Much as the balance was there, the charred shallot was on the raw side for me that's slightly too sharp. Perhaps the tartare would taste even better if the shallot was charred more to achieve better caramelisation.

The udon was immersed in a flavourful sauce made of uni miso and kimchi. The level of piquancy was on point and had given an edge to our appetite. We appreciated that the sauce did not overpower the taste of the snow crab which was served in a generous amount.

Definitely the most celebrated, almost iconic, dish at Fukuro. Lovely caramelization and buttery goodness with crispy crumb and natural sweetness from the corn, it’s divine, and addictive, a dish I’ll keep coming back for.

Spinach ohitashi

Crunchy spinach soaking up all the delicious rich white sesame sauce is scrumptious.

Agedashi tofu $98
Fried tofu at its best, crispy on the outside, smoking hot and smooth on the inside. But the star of the dish was the mushroom vinaigrette 🤩 earthy yet tangy with the vinegar, rich tasty and stimulating.

Kimchi udon $228
Generous snow crab meat with springy udon in an extremely rich creamy miso sauce. The addition of kimchi brings extra heat and oomph.

Crispy cone with a secret flavored ice cream. The raspberry sauce was apparent but the ice cream flavor was a mystery until the staff revealed. Such an unexpected flavor that still left me mesmerized. No spoiler, go try and find out 😆

Finally my turn to try this IG phenomenon! And it lived up to every single expectation I have (I expected highly!) What can I say, they are some legit exceptional flawless flavorsome food. Another signature dish and deserve every acclaim. Fried till crispy yet still soft inside coated with caramel and butter, almost feel like popcorn, even better actually. And merely the aroma delighted me.

Spinach ohitashi

That sesame sauce is one of the best I’ve ever tasted! So flavorful and rich in sesame, perfect combo with the crunchy spinach.

Mackerel special
It’s much more than just good old sashimi! Elegantly presented with pickles, the simplicity has done the beautiful fish justice and letting it shine. Surprisingly flavorful.

Agedashi tofu
Fried tofu at its best, crispy on the outside, smoking hot and smooth on the inside. But the star of the dish was the sauce 🤩 jam packed with mushroom flavor with slight acidity. I simply can’t resist from spooning them like a broth.

Yaki udon
Snow crab meat on the udon almost as if they were cheese on pasta. It was that generous. Not only did they put crab meat on, it was so rich in crab flavor.

Mochi dessert
Dessert was as good as their savory items. Tried their mochi dessert special. Interesting presentation with the mochi ‘roll’ lying on some popping chocolate and matcha crumbs, with the rum sauce beneath. The mochi itself was soft and chewy and taste like Japanese banana cake. When eating all elements together, it created such harmony and balance in both flavor and texture. The chocolate and matcha were acting like popping candies to stimulate with texture and drama while rum sauce brought the right tanginess to balance off the sweetness.

I would describe their service as being very aggressive. On the positive side, staff were very attentive and friendly, proactively explaining the menu and recommending their specials. But on the flip side, they were a bit pushy at times, serving and collecting plates in such a haste. Almost feel like they were rushing us to finish our meal even when they still have plenty of empty seats. Urging us to order dessert right after we finish our mains, and the bill arrived soon after we finished our dessert (without us even asking to check the bill) These small gestures indeed slightly demoted our dining experience. Would suggest slowing down a little bit, allowing customers to enjoy the food in a relaxing pace.
