Congratulations to my good friend who has a baby on the way! Pregnant women crave foods and tonight it was onion rings and cheesecake. We celebrated by going to one of our favorite places - Main St. Deli. The main reason I enjoy coming here, is that its so laidback I feel like I could almost roll my sleeves up and put my feet on the table.
The place was only half full when we arrived at 7:45, yet service was slow and unattentive - we asked twice for a glass of water and waited 10 minutes for it. Maybe this had to do with the celebrity guest I spotted slunk into a booth - Stephen Chan Chi Wan of Commercial Radio, in all his notoriety. I wondered if I should ask him about the corruption scandal, haha.
Eventually, water arrived and so did the complimentary bowls of pickles and sauerkraut, which is a German pickled cabbage that never fails to get my appetite started. The pickle was too sour to eat by itself so I stuffed loads of sauerkraut into my mouth; crisp, sour and refreshing.
Soon after, the onion rings ($74) arrived. We were so happy to see it piping hot straight from the fryer that, before the plate was even put down we had already each grabbed one. We bit into it - It was huge, crispy, thickly battered and so hot it burnt your tongue. But it was so BITTER! I loved the crunchiness of the onion ring but ended up having to dip every one in a thick douse of BBQ sauce to mask the bitterness Perhaps next time the chef can use a lower heat to fry them or soak them in lemon/lime juice beforehand to soften the flavor a bit.The mains were more satisfying. She ordered one of my favorites, the Blue Ribbon Beef Burger ($158/8oz.) and I opted for the Slow-Roasted Pulled Pork Sandwich ($158/full), both dishes came with a side of fries. Hers was the curly fries, which came smothered under a layer of melted cheese. Cheese fries to go with a big blue cheese burger. Filling, simple and tasty comfort food. No complaints there.
My sandwich came in the form of a generous heaping of pulled pork, avocado and monterey jack cheese, all squished between two slices of toasted rye bread. Came with a small bowl of salsa.
The toasted rye was a bit tough to eat as the hardness of the bread made it difficult to bite into without scraping my palate. I poured all the salsa over the bread to soften it. A softer, plain white bun would've done the trick better. The pulled pork inside was not the smoky type but still a bit on the dry side. However, it managed to deliver a deliciously sweet and tangy(might be the salsa) flavor. In fact, the flavor of the pork was so powerful that I did not taste the avocado at all. Perhaps that is the reason the common recipe uses coleslaw as a side. Nonetheless, the pulled pork saved the sandwich and I found the sandwich quite enjoyable. Also, the size of the set was more than sufficient to fill me up. We finally hauled our now-heavy bodies over to the 'walls' of cakes displayed by the entrance. Like all the other times, we could not put anything more in our stomachs after the mains. Given the size of their cakes, it would probably be a separate visit just to eat dessert. There will be another time.

The atmosphere and the burgers, perfect place for gatherings with good friends who are noisy and can eat a lot.
