The only problem now is the fact that I have another hour to kill before the long anticipated meal. So I found myself on a mission to find a place interesting enough near my dinner venue to get me through the hour.

After walking around Central for a good 15-20 minutes without success, I suddenly came across The Mandarin Cake Shop (文華餅店) at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, a place that I haven't visited for a long long time. Bingo.

Opera cake ($48) - This was pretty decent but the contrasting textures from the different layers didn't come through. There're at least half a dozen places that I think offer a better opera cake. Check that, maybe at least a dozen.

1963 Mandarin cheesecake ($48) - A namesake dessert (sort of), oh I love namesake desserts. This was pretty cheesy almost like an American style cheesecake but it was one that was desperately looking for something to spice it up. Blueberry, passion fruit, something.....

I still remember The Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop as one of the top patisseries in the city not too long ago and even now, it's still pretty highly rated by many Hong Kongers (as seen here with customers walking in and out of the shop during my visit). But I thought with the growing number of quality patisseries these days, their stock has dropped significantly to a point where I won't even consider them a top 20 choice in town. The only title I'm willing to give is perhaps "The most overrated cake shop in Hong Kong".

PS. Another 10% was tagged onto my bill for dining in. Fair deal (Service was excellent).

最近忙得不可開交，生日碰巧在星期天，都要在家工作大半天。終究都要鬆口氣，一直好想去文華吃scone，生日，應該好好縱容一下自已。星期天的文華餅店，顧客不少，但尚算不用等位，約幾分鐘已可入座。點了Scone set、杏仁牛角包、Opera Cake及一杯熱的vanilla朱古力。跟另一半分吃。應該是全港最好吃的scone了。不會太乾，也不會太濕。可是，今次不夠暖哄哄。跟clotted cream及Jam是絕配。牛角包，杏仁鋪得慷慨，麵粉香、牛油香，好香甜，裡面的custard甜得恰到好處。Opera Cake，酒店餅房出品的一貫水準，未至驚為天人。可能近年精品餅店開多了。甜美的熱朱古力，連茶匙都是朱古力做。小朋友時可樂死了。但年紀已長，喝下去卻嫌有些太甜膩。酒店一貫消費．．．有點小奢侈。服務嗎，當然是一流水準。

Went for dessert after lunch in Central. This place brings back good memories of when I did my internship in the MOHK Pastry Kitchen. The fact that I came back for more cakes even after eating them for 4 months continuously, shows how good they taste and how much I miss them Was there with two other friends. Was there with two other friends. We ordered 3 cakes to share: Opera Cake, Double Milk Chocolate Cake and Cheesecake ($37 each).

I really appreciate their Opera Cake - so many layers in such a small piece of cake! However, I feel that (even in small quantities) this cake is a little too sweet for my liking. The taste of chocolate is as rich as I like it, almost bitter. There were also layers of crunch which was really nice. Its taste of coffee was very strong - a little too strong for me. Nonetheless, great texture (smooth and crunchy) ... would be great for those with a very sweet tooth and a coffee lovers!

Double Milk Chocolate Cake

This has always been my favourite MO cake! I like chocolate desserts and this fulfills all requirements! So pretty on the outside with a glossy chocolate glaze topped with gold bits! The inside is also a beautiful combination of browns. I like how this cake isn't overly sweet but still very rich in chocolate. The texture is also crunchy and not too soft. I'm not a big fan of mousse cakes so the thick layers of cake in this slice was perfect paired with the chocolate cream

I didn't try the cheesecake but according to my friend, it was very cheesy. He would've preferred it to be sweeter than what it already was.

In terms of the cake shop itself - really regret not taking pictures of the cake displays! All so beautiful and delicate, made by talented pastry artist of MO. The interior was dark but grand, with a small number of seats on a bar-like table surrounding a big decorative centerpiece. Spacious and comfortable, the physical setting is perfect for a nicer dessert experience with friends.

The service was excellent too. Everyone was nice and friendly, all were females. It was great that they offered to serve us water with the cakes, and the water was totally cold enough! They are also able to remember your orders without writing them down, very important for a 5 star hotel like this. Great!

And the price is expensive for a piece of cake, but normal for a 5 star hotel. I guess the whole experience is worth it, but not if you are only going to buy the cake to eat home. But of course, eating there would mean another 10% service charge.

睇openrice d食評,好多人都話文華d cake好味.一於去試下先~去到有bar枱坐,跟住再去睇下食乜野cake.出到去,wa...太多太多cake啦,全部個樣都好靚.最後order左件Opera cake...真係好好味.個面係好濃o既朱古力,中間有好多layer,仲有我至愛o既餅底.朋友order左杯chocolate, 仲有支chocolate spoon,好正!遲d再有機會行過,一定會再黎試埋其他cake.

因為幾位朋友生日~~~~朋友買了個opera cake 慶祝~~~~~~~第1次食文華的cake..果然同出面的cake 有d 唔同!!正! 食落好有口感~~~好有chocolate 味~~~~~~~未食之前睇落好似有d漏咁....但食完...好想再食多件!!!不過美中不足係...個餅底好似有d硬~~唔知係咪雪得耐的關係~下次有機會的話想再try 下第2d 款!!!
