I know that I should be frugal while I’m unemployed, but a friend of mine who was in HK for a short while suggested high tea at Sevva and I couldn’t resist XD Prior to the visit I’ve heard many things about this place before:1) Their famous Marie Antoinette Cake2) The amazing balcony view3) Their horrible serviceWe went on a weekday and I wanted to make a reservation just to be safe; however they don’t take reservations at all. We went on a weekday and I wanted to make a reservation just to be safe; however they don’t take reservations at all. In fact, they don’t even let you wait at the restaurant early for high tea, which stars at 2:30. We got there at 2:15 pm, but were told to take the elevator back down and come back at 2:30 sharp. When we got back down there already were 15 people in line.
Anyhow, we were seated right away at 2:30. It was a little bit cold that day so we chose to stay inside and missed out on the view haha. The restaurant takes up the entire floor, with the bar/kitchen in the middle so it was hard to see the entire restaurant unless you walked around. They only had two high tea set options – the signature one below and a vegetarian option, both at $680 plus tax. Definitely the most expensive high tea place I’ve ever been to.. I was surprised to find that they only serve two kinds of tea – English Breakfast and Earl Grey. This is very disappointing as most high tea places serve a much much wider selection of tea. At some places they would even bring the actual tea leaves to your table for you to choose. I expected this to be given at an upscale restaurant like Sevva – but no.
The next disappointment was the size of the set – it was tiny! When they brought the stand to us I thought it was only a single portion and they would bring another one to us. This is the smallest high tea set I’ve ever had! Also, there weren’t two pieces of everything which should also be a standard for high tea places!
Anyhow, I took pictures of both sides and labeled the food accordingly. I didn’t have the patience to take a picture of each item. Maybe I should do that next time Here’s a breakdown of what I thought of each item:
~Toasted Crumpet with Smoked Salmon & Chive Cream Cheese – no idea why they called it a crumpet when it was just a baguette. It wasn’t chewy though so that’s fine. I couldn’t really taste the chives in the cream cheese. Also, I found it weird that they had to add a piece of lemon on top.
~Mini Crab Cake Burger – no comment as my friend ate it lol
~Mini Short Rib Burger – The beef was cooked medium rare which was nice, and the red onion pieces helped to keep it fresh tasting
~Wild Mushroom Ragoût on Crispy Rice Cracker – This was quite nice. Not overly salty and the texture of the mushroom actually went nicely with the crispy rice cracker!
~Mini Mont Blanc – The chestnut purée sat on top of some meringue which was nice as it kept the dessert light. It was very tasty and not too sweet!
~Cigar Wafer Cookies – uhhh no comment. I have no idea why they decided that these two flimsy sticks could be counted as an item in a high tea set.
~SEVVA Pineapple Carrot Cake – DELICIOUS! The cake was very moist and had many pieces of carrot in it. However I couldn’t taste any pineapple at all :s
~SEVVA Vegetable Spring Rolls – This was decently made so no complaints. The wrapper was thin so it didn’t give me a greasy feeling
~Chicken Roll Sandwich – It was cool to unwrap the sandwich, but that was about it. Nothing too memorable about the sandwich
~Ms. B’s Turkey & Salad Sandwich – same as the Chicken Roll. Nothing special except that they used whole grain bread which I guess made it not so ordinary
~Truffle Scrambled Egg on Toasted Poilâne – I had to do a Google search for Poilâne, which AFAIK is a type of sourdough made by a certain bakery in Paris. No idea if they really got the bread from that particular bakery, but even if they did it really didn’t matter cause it soaked up all the grease from the scrambled eggs anyway. The eggs were tasteless, but luckily the truffle was strong enough to support it.
~Chocolate Fudge Cake with Marmalade – Yummy! The cake was rich and moist yet not overly sweet. Also this was one of the rare occasions where I found that the citrusy flavours actually worked well with the chocolate.
~The Original Caramel Crunch Cake – This was also delicious! Well, given that this is their signature cake it really should be. The cake was light and moist and the cream was rich and milky :3
Side note – the service really wasn’t as horrible as people make it out to be but still could be better.
Also, I have never left a high tea session hungry before. Usually I’d be so stuffed that I could barely walk but this is definitely not the case at Sevva.
After service charge the total came out to be $748 for the both of us! Definitely expensive. Was it worth it? It’s hard to say, since it does have a really nice ambience. The savoury items were average, but I must say they do their cakes well. I might come back for their cakes in the future.
