My husband and I dined here on a with another couple upon recommdation by a friend who highly rates the curries. Being from Australia, we were a little confused by the idea of an upscale gastro-pub but thought we'd give it a try.The restaurant is very cosy and intimate and has a traditional, luxurious colonial feel. My husband and I dined here on a with another couple upon recommdation by a friend who highly rates the curries. Being from Australia, we were a little confused by the idea of an upscale gastro-pub but thought we'd give it a try.

The restaurant is very cosy and intimate and has a traditional, luxurious colonial feel. It probably looks more like a freak museum of what a person who has never been to an English pub would think a traditional pub looks like. The waiters were very professional, polite and attentive. 

Our table ordered the:
- lamb samosas,
- devils on horseback,
- fried calamari,
- chicken tikka masala curry,
- the chicken tandoori ,
- fish pie,
- lamb rogan josh and
- lemon tart.

Each dish averaged HKD 300. Considering that a curry could potantially only cost HKD 60 from somewhere else, we wondered what would justify these prices other than the location of the restaurant. On a spicieness level, the curries were very mild.

If you are ever silly enough to even come to the restaurant, DO NOT ORDER THE FISH PIE! It was AWFUL!!! It was nothing more than creamy potato slop, topped with a thin layer of crumble (not actual pie pastry) and a few bits of fish flesh! The pie was decorated with some tasteless 'fish foam' to give it a deceptive 'high end' look, which I am sure some people might appreciate enough to whip out their camera for. The lamb in the Rogan josh was very dry and not cooked down enough.

We walked away feeling completely ripped off unable to fathom that we spent the equivalent of AUD 221 on average pub food/indian.

The chicken tikka masala and the chicken tandoori were both lovely, but you can get an equally good one from elsewhere for less than half the price. The starters were also okay, but did not warrrent the heavy price tag. 

Lemon pie was delicious! It was very 'lemony' and had a caramelised topping, like a creme-brulee. The portion size was rather small, unlike the mains which were very big.

I would also like to add that my dear friend very sweetly organised a birthday surprise for our table which was a cup of fresh cream and strawberry jelly. The waiter adorably also offers to sing 'Happy Birthday' as a solo performance.

The Chinnery seems to target the market of tourists who don't know any better, or people who clearly have too much money to spend. I would only recommend that you come here if you have spinal problems and need a comfortable and supportive chair to sit on.

甜魔媽媽當然超愛吃甜品,但同時也對咖哩有份莫名喜愛;近日發現了隱身香港文華東方酒店內的 英倫風酒吧 The Chinnery,既有美味的咖哩,又有超好吃的甜品,實在太令人滿足啦~香港文華東方酒店的餐飲水準向來都很高,無論是 Café Causette 下午茶、Clipper Lounge 吃 buffet、文華廳飲茶、文華扒房鋸扒,甚至只到文華餅店買蛋糕甜點,都帶來美好回憶。多間餐廳中,The Chinnery 一直比較低調不開揚,連位置也是隱身於一樓的角落,要穿越耀眼水晶燈柱才能看/來到;進到店內,環境復刻而迷人,真有重抵英倫感覺~  小小酒吧供應的食品不算多,餐單就是一頁紙,但11點半開始食客卻陸續不斷湧至,到12時左右就滿座,回頭客特兔,魅力實力可見一斑!特別一提,這裡不設訂座,當日也多得朋友提早抵達呢。 先來香脆有咬口的小法包,但主角其實是凝香軟滑的美味牛油;可知倫敦高級餐廳的牛油全都非常美味,所以更感到濃重英倫風!三女生邊吃,也邊研究吃甚麼好,選擇從來不易啊~ 大家都是虔誠的甜魔,頭盤只要份當日推介的 Caesar Salad,多留 quota 給主菜及甜品吧。這凱撒沙律簡單

香港文華東方酒店的餐飲水準向來都很高,無論是 Café Causette 下午茶、Clipper Lounge 吃 buffet、文華廳飲茶、文華扒房鋸扒,甚至只到文華餅店買蛋糕甜點,都帶來美好回憶。多間餐廳中,The Chinnery 一直比較低調不開揚,連位置也是隱身於一樓的角落,要穿越耀眼水晶燈柱才能看/來到;進到店內,環境復刻而迷人,真有重抵英倫感覺~

先來香脆有咬口的小法包,但主角其實是凝香軟滑的美味牛油;可知倫敦高級餐廳的牛油全都非常美味,所以更感到濃重英倫風!三女生邊吃,也邊研究吃甚麼好,選擇從來不易啊~

大家都是虔誠的甜魔,頭盤只要份當日推介的 Caesar Salad,多留 quota 給主菜及甜品吧。這凱撒沙律簡單得來並不簡單,除了羅馬生菜極級新鮮爽脆,配料的煙肉、麵包粒均是頂級鮮脆貨色,加上適合的沙律醬、芝士及鯷魚,滋味清新又豐富!同上雞胸肉也很嫩滑好吃~

英國菜中最為人熟悉相信是 Fish & Chips, Burger, Fish Pie 之類,這裡也有供應,不過這天我們選吃印菜風味主菜。首先是 Tandoori, Sizzling organic chicken leg with yoghurt, spices & pickles ($258),以熱熨鐵板盛載起香嫩惹味的有機雞腿肉,加上乳酪醬、漬物,滋味更加豐富,一定要趁熱享用~

英國曾於印度殖民統治很長時期,取得了當地最好的香料,故不少老饕都說,最好的咖哩其實要在英國找!因此當日也選了 Madras Cod, mustard seeds, coconut & curry leaves ($278),銀兜內約有7-8件鱈魚,肉質嫩滑而挺實,拌以香濃刺激的咖哩估不到地夾,拌上香飯或加點 Naan ($78) 享用,均是美味難忘。

美妙的風味主菜後,又到最期待的甜品環節啦!其實這裡的菜式都很大,甜品亦不例外;貪心的同時點下 Chocolate Cake 及 Apple Crumble ($108@),會否吃不完呢?

答案是絕對不會,因為實在太好吃啦!要知甜魔最恨的,是點了心太軟卻換來鐵石心腸,餐單只寫 Chocolate Cake, warm, coffee ice cream 的蛋糕,卻香濃濕潤兼有軟滑流心,是個極品心太軟來的,太太太令人驚喜啦~

由於濃郁的熔漿是緩緩流心(正合我意!!),後知後覺的甜魔媽媽切開分了一半才補拍一張... 但這蛋糕真的很讚;同上的咖啡味雪糕口味較柔和,亦與蛋糕很夾超好吃~

興奮同時,也沒忘記吃另一款 Apple Crumble, cinnamon, vanilla ice-cream,因為成品也很巨大誘人!以鐵板呈上的蘋果金實,面層十分清脆好吃,底下的蘋果餡亦甜美,加上恰到好處的肉柱香氣,以及巨大甜香滑溜的雲呢拿雪糕,很令人滿足~

最後還有 Petit Fours,是 Brownie 及 Apple Crumble 小蛋糕,甜魔媽媽再次喜歡朱古力那款多一些!吃完小甜點,甜胃更加飽到百分百,滿足離開了~

歡樂的時光過得飛快,下午2時多大部分食客都走了,拍一張酒吧照後,也是時間離開;我不是酒鬼,但覺得在這裡飲酒會不錯。最後,聽說11月這裡會有新菜單,真再想來八卦下呢~

自斯里蘭卡回來後

蘋果金寶是我一向推薦的招牌甜物
蘋果肉軟熟而好味 金寶脆脆為這份清新 更添了不少口感
而驚喜的也是巧克力蛋糕

Thanks to Occupy Central we went to The Chinnery for Lunch without reservation (normally this secret joint is jam packed!). Managed to grab 2 empty seats at the bar! I had the skate in brown sauce. Perfectly done with the skin super slightly burnt crispy. Fish is really tender and flavourful and the sidedishes were fresh enough. Portion was generous as always and services was really attentive as you would expect in a five star institution. I would like to come back more often if it's not too bus

I had the skate in brown sauce. Perfectly done with the skin super slightly burnt crispy. Fish is really tender and flavourful and the sidedishes were fresh enough. Portion was generous as always and services was really attentive as you would expect in a five star institution. 

I would like to come back more often if it's not too busy. A glass of whiskey after work would be nice as they have one of the widest collection of whiskey in town.

Overall very nice experience. I had planned to take my father (who was visiting from the States and asked for a bar with a wide selection of single malts...we are both big scotch drinkers) for a few drinks before dinner but actually ended up eating there...Amazing selection of single malts and blended whiskey's but that's not all. Amazing selection of single malts and blended whiskey's but that's not all. The service was good too. Although the bartender was a bit odd, he knew his scotch and was very friendly.

We ended up staying for dinner. I had the fish n' chips and they were about as good as it gets (when it comes to fish n' chips anyway). My girl was with us and ordered a veggie curry that was good too.

Great place to hang out, drink and munch on British pub style food. I'll be back!

文華東方酒店今年踏入50週年,酒店特別跟Taylor’s Port合作引入同年1963出產限量波特酒於千日里供應。說起波特酒的由來,也要說起二、三百年前的英法百年戰爭時期,由於英國人抵制法國酒進口,轉從葡萄牙入酒,但為了長時間的運送會損壞葡萄酒的品質,他們靈機一觸把白蘭地加入酒內,讓酒保持最佳狀態。後來發現,這樣釀出來的酒,除了不變質,更可把紅酒的澀味減去,因釀成半發酵酒時加入白蘭地可終止發酵過程,殘留的糖份為波特酒帶來獨特的甜味,酒的口感也更細膩。酒的甜度較高,所以都會作餐後酒。波特酒根據顏色分成三類,Ruby、Tawny Port及White Port。Tawny Port一般都是用數個不同年酒份來釀製,所以酒瓶上標示的年份指的是所有不同年份的茶波特酒混合的平均數,於陳年木桶存放時間愈長,顏色便會由紅轉成琥珀色,酒體口感更順滑,1963是其中推介的年份。這天來到傳媒午飯,有機會品嚐1963 Taylor’s Port限量佳酒,實在難得。大廚特設的餐單只在這天供應,先來第一道菜Home Smoked Organic Scottish Salmon over Cedar Wood,se

大廚特設的餐單只在這天供應,先來第一道菜Home Smoked Organic Scottish Salmon over Cedar Wood,served with Buckwheat Blinis and Sour Cream,pair with Chanson Chablis Premier Cru Montmains 2010。以雪松木來燻香的有機蘇格蘭三文魚,香氣濃郁,入口久久不散。魚肉帶點油脂,肉質嫩滑好吃。配以Chardonnay白酒,果甜適中,不會太重,跟煙燻味道相夾起來卻不錯。

Whole Roasted Rhug Estate Chicken Stuffed with Foie Gras,Black Truffle,with Mashed Potato & Spinach,pair with Chanson Clos des Feves Beaune 1er Vru 2009,選用來自英國威爾士登比郡Rhug有機農場的雞隻,農場採用天然放牧飼養法令動物可以自由食用零污染的飼料,所以出品的肉質品質也屬優質。雞皮下釀了鵝肝及黑松露後再烤焗,肉很嫩口,雞鮮加上濃郁的鵝盰味,就是很惹味。配上的薯蓉又帶松露香,令人多吃幾口。而這款紅酒以100% Pinot Noir釀製,喜歡此酒帶點像雲尼拿的甜香,入口不過刺激,不會把肉鮮搶過。

到今天的主角,就是1963年Single Harvest Tawny Port,另外還有10 & 30 Years Old Tawny,跟缽酒吃的有Cheese Platter芝士拼盤。酒身帶金黃深竭色,芳香撲鼻,入口暢滑,比10 & 30 的更如甜美細膩,此佳釀,有機會真要一試。

如果人在中環,又想來個Happy Hour 的話,一定選這裡。環境是非常傳統的英式,客人也有很多西方人。事實上,這裡有不少的威士忌選擇,可是今天就來一杯New Zealand的Pinot noir吧。這地區的pinot noir帶芬芳的草莓香氣,夾雜少許的辛辣,入口微酸,單寧低,是很易接受的酒。

威士忌並不是我的愛 麥芽和微微焦的木桶香氣 對我來說 有點深 因而也偏愛葡萄酒多一些 不過雖然自己不喝 還是很欣賞喝威士忌的男士 當然 也絕不是加綠茶兌的那種 有內容的東西 無需調劑 已夠耐人尋味

用銀器承著 咖哩雞滿滿一兜 雖然知道咖喱其實很油 不過還是不喜歡看見表層飄著油 好似油層和咖喱層濾開的樣子 當然 這裡的做法絕不會欺場 咖喱汁加入的印度香料 會和平日馬來的椰香味不一樣 少了一份甜意 和碎花生的堅果味 自然的香料 滲入雞肉 這大概是我吃過最滑腍的作品之一 肉質爽口又好嚼 帶著飽滿的肉汁 也不會為醬汁入味煮的過久而柴 而也是粒粒分明 飽滿帶著小小油光 每一口都很香 另外配的是 Garlic Naan,$68。脆身不過並沒有什麼特別的味道 依舊覺得拌飯是最佳組合

現焗的麵包布甸 頂著一只圓鼓鼓的雲尼拿雪糕 吃過最讓我心醉得 是 Clipper LoungeEaster Chocolate Buffet 想起那一整個朱古力氣息的節日 就很快樂 麵包布甸 麵包焗的脆身 上露的部分不好過硬 不然吃到下面的軟腍部分 會很不搭調 而下方的部分 也要和蛋漿融合得很好 夠溼潤又不會太塌 不然吃著很容易爛爛的 而這裡的質感 定是深得我心的 對文華的好質素一向很有信心 挖出一勺 微微溢出的蛋香 甜度也不會過 好吃的一勺接一勺 另外置頂的雪糕 精彩的在於化出來的感覺 淌下來的細膩感 讓整份甜品的感覺 更添視覺美感

甜胃是打開了 就收不住的呢 加上配了好喝的Muscat 甜而溫潤的口感 真的很容易讓人停不下口
想吃個淡味些的 還記得在Steak house吃的那一份Apple Crumble 酸甜始終 香脆的金寶也是讓人難以忘懷 今日就來試試文華的蘋果派
蘋果肉 軟身有水分 蘋果的香氣保留 會有微微的酸 但是軟綿的果肉配上外層的派皮 是酥口又很搭味的組合 另外有些金寶碎碎 也給口味上增添了層次 剛吃過一客的麵包布丁 蘋果的清新很好的平衡了甜膩的感覺 而Muscat也

不太乾身 就是稍稍有些太甜了呢 畢竟今晚已吃了太多甜物 然而在這個男士主場的威士忌吧裡 女士們也不用望而卻步 點一客輕身的咖喱雞 甜美的一晚

Chicken Tikka,Slow Cooked Chicken in a Tomato Makhni Sauce with Basmati Rice,$208。咖哩雞十分香,一送來已傳來陣陣咖哩味。咖哩汁用番茄和奶油煮製成,加入獨特印度香料,十分惹味。而且一客份量不少,有七、八件雞肉,肉煮得入味軟腍,伴飯吃最好。如此美味的咖哩汁,除了配飯以外,也多點一份薄餅沾來吃,Garlic Naan,$68。蒜味薄餅烘焗得不夠時間,表面欠缺金黃,但_,外表微脆,又帶點韌性。

到了甜品,選了其中三款,這款必點的Eton Mess,Crushed Meringue with Fresh Strawberries and Cream,$108。這款經典的英式甜品,以草莓、忌廉和蛋白脆餅重疊而混成,從名字看要應該是亂七八糟的樣子,但朋友說這甜品還未夠亂,不過比起我看過另一位朋友吃的照片,這已不算很工整。酸酸的草莓中和了蛋白脆餅的甜膩,加上忌廉令口感帶滑,也都好吃。

Sticky Toffee + Chocolate Pudding,Warm Toffee Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream,$108。而這款甜品是朱古力蛋糕加上拖肥醬及雲尼拿雪糕,蛋糕帶濃郁可可味,相對來說較普通,拖肥醬可夠甜溜,份量也可多些。

Others I recall include places like The Globe, The Pawn's Living Room and Dicken's Bar. A related authentic enough Scottish experience can be found at The Canny Man where they at least celebrate Robert Burns Days with some Haggis during January 25th. The ones you didn't hear me mention above, well omissions aside , may be that's because so many pertain to be selling British food but really don't offer the proper British stuff on their menus.. I think Alfie's by Kee is one that is sitting in the middle of this group somewhere, but forget about the other ones if you have even been to UK and experienced the real thing over there.

If some of you are into more offal dining options, The Chinnery also offers items such as Grilled Calf Livers, Roasted Bone Marrows on toasts, and Steak and Kidney Pie, etc. It is a very very impressive menu and I heard from their staff, is going to be updated again soon. I am really looking forward to trying out these evolving upcoming dishes. The prices always seems to have come down a bit from the past making it affordable..

Scotch Eggs with Minced Cumberland Sausage and Quail Eggs - $118
This is quite enjoyable and unique, The Pawn used to make a similar version but they resorted back to the larger chicken egg option these days. I think the Cumberland sausage mince can do better with a little more herbs. ~ 4/5

Fish Pie, with Lobster Foam, Salmon, Scallop and Prawns - $208
This had a bread crumbed top and an external ring of mash potatoes. It arrived luke-warm and would be tremendously better if it was just a tad hotter, and that's already counting in the time 3-4 of us took photos of this within a short period. Initially, only some creamy salmon and prawns were found in abundance, and the scallops seemed to be sitting nearer the bottom. The lobster foam didn't taste of much to be honest it was more gimmicky. We really thought this was promising on paper, but turned out to be the most weakest dish for the night as it lacked that 'seafood richness' we anticipated. ~ 2.5/5

Chicken Tikka Masala Curry, with Papadom and Basmati Rice & 4 Condiments - $208
This Tikka Masala was very good indeed, it had a good mix of creaminess and spices and herbs, utterly well balanced! It could be slightly more spicier, but I happen to like it this way personally only.
The chicken pieces were also tender and tasteful. The Pulao Basmati was fragrant and carrying just a hint of cardamom and saffron. The 4 Condiments of Minty Yogurt, Mango Chutney, Mango Pickle, and a Spiced Eggplant from memory (?) are given for your selection...

Garlic Naan - $68
When this arrived, I was slightly disappointed that it carried no charred bubbles. Eating Naan is actually like eating Pizza Napoletana (well, they do share some common linkage from Pita). I guess the version here is more elegant, but the texture and the amount of shiny garlic on top was good enough. I think it could be more crisped up to bring out it's full potential. ~ 3.5/5

Yorkshire Pudding with Beef Gravy - $38
Eggy, aromatic, you can tell this was made from a good batter. This is one of the best flavoured and textured Yorkshire Puddings I have ever had in Hong Kong, but it could arrive slightly more hotter. The Beef Gravy was actually the most interesting component - it tasted so clean and the collagen sticking your lips together tells you it was boiled down naturally with great ingredients. Some people like artificial tasting gravy diluted from gravy powder, but the Beef Jus/Gravy here is of the higher quality usually poured on top of Roasted Prime Rib slices
A must order here. ~ 5/5

Friend said the downstairs Cafe Causette version actually tasted similar yet better. I agree with this. These were more oily and probably slightly under-fried, it wasn't crispy which I don't mind, but I did mind the oil on the surface a bit. Also not much potato taste too! ~ 3.5/5

Eton Mess - Crushed Meringue with Strawberries & Cream - $108
This was good! A British desserts involving broken up pieces of egg meringues and strawberries with cream, this is one of my fav desserts despite the simplicity. I think the version here was quite decent. It could have more sourness to balance the sweetness. ~ 4/5

Lemon tart came without a lemon curd, but more of a Frangipane-like filling... *seriously lost at this point* The texture was weird enough, but there wasn't much lemon taste either. The supporting berries and sorbet were better. A little lost at words with their formula here... ~ 2/5

Sticky Date and Chocolate Pudding, with Toffee Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream - $108
The taste was fine, but the texture was more like a flourless chocolate cake rather than the suet/shortening filled Pudding I had come to expect. It was dryish but tasted good. Toffee Sauce was expectedly sweet but that's the correct way. I think the taste of this was fairly loyal to the authentic recipes but it really needed more of that moist mouth-feel. ~ 3.5/5

And for this particular instance, we were here to trial Michelin 2 Star quality Scottish Food to be cooked by the team flown all the way in from Restaurant Andrew Fairlie of Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire of Scotland. Having been to The Chinnery only a few times for a quick drink at the Bar, it was not until the Media Invitation by The Chinnery that I realised, they do provide some homely British Food, some of these even using a more molecular cooking approach to enhance the result!

And for this particular instance, we were here to trial Michelin 2 Star quality Scottish Food to be cooked by the team flown all the way in from Restaurant Andrew Fairlie of Gleneagles Hotel, Perthshire of Scotland. Although this Scottish cross-over event only lasted roughly 2 weeks, I think some of us who went to the event are kind of missing it already. In fact, many of use made more than 1 return visit after the introduction night - to sample more high-end Scottish dishes. The Butterscotch Tart was to-die-for gorgeous!


The Freezer Temperature Dalwhinnie Whisky was also a new novel way to drink a more viscous whisky, introduced to us for pairing with the desserts, almost like a syrupy sweet wine.


For now, I'll happily return and sit in the corner table reading the paper and sipping away on my Guinness or a few drams of Whiskies.... until then.

If you come here for lunch, you need to come early. We arrived at 12:30 pm and we got the last table.I had my all time favourite - fish & chips, which is one of the very rare good fish & chips in HKBut I think I had too much oily stuff, so I had to cleanse it off with my Earl Grey tea.

If you like a clubby atmosphere, large comfy chairs, and no nonsense British food, this is the place.For appetizers, they serve a huge piece of goose liver pate with chopped aspic, large enough for two. It is ideal for sharing if you like this dish but are a bit worried about the fat content and cholestrol. Unlike most restaurants who tend to use duck liver nowadays, they use goose liver, which gives a much more refined taste. It is great served with buttered toast.For mains, I go for their roas

Service is old world excellence! They take good care of you in a very personalized way. Charming!
If you are tired of the formal dining room, this is the place to come to for lunch or dinner.
