Have you heard of this cafe yet I hadn't, until a friend who works/lives in Chai Wan told me about it. No wonder, it only opened in November, and I am not in Chai Wan all the time. I wanted to see what it was about since new cafe's in Hong Kong interest me. There seems to be quite a buzz about this one though! On the 13th floor of Chai Wan Industrial City Phase 1, I did not expect to walk around the corner and hear music playing as I got out of the big lift. On the 13th floor of Chai Wan Industrial City Phase 1, I did not expect to walk around the corner and hear music playing as I got out of the big lift. But what really surprised me was the aroma of chicken roasting in the oven.mmmmm! I walked into the space, which is not too big and was given a soft feeling from the natural light coming in from the big window overlooking the bay below.
It was 1:15pm and there were a few tables of people chatting to each other. I was quite hungry after a busy morning and the cold weather had me craving something hot to warm up. I was very happy to notice that, as well as there being delicious-sounding sandwiches, healthy salads and some breakfast items like salmon bagels (next time!), they had a special pasta and soup of the day as their set lunch meal. "Beef and tomato Bolognese Ragu on Spaghetti with parmesan and basil" read the sign at the counter. For $58, I could get that pasta, and a soup (today's was "Home Made Shiitake Mushroom and Thyme") and a side salad. Not expensive at all!
I got my card (you have to collect your food at the counter at this cafe) and collected my cup of soup and the steaming bowl of spaghetti with a tomato and beef bolognese spooned on top. The parmesan cheese was melting and giving off a great aroma.
As I sat, i noticed the tables fill up over the lunch hour very fast. I read my book, watched the boats come in and out of the harbor and the cafe came alive with voices and chatter.
The food was classic cafe-style: not overly rich but well balanced flavours. You could tell it was home made because there was none of that aftertaste you get from pre-made preserved food I have had at cafe's before. I liked the attention to detail:each dish had a specific garnish (croutons and parsely on the soup, parmesan and basil on the pasta). Afterwards I was very satisfied, and perhaps ate a little too much!
I see that there is a facebook page and a website for Chaiwanese. From those pictures, you can tell why they are already so busy during lunch. I will definitely be going back when I am next in Chai Wan, this time specifically to try that salmon and cream cheese bagel.
