Thanks to some loudmouth celebrity amongst a few others out there who have strongly recommended them, suddenly 德成號 has become the hardest to get egg rolls in town, requiring you to reserve upwards of 8 months in advance, unless you know the owners and/or are friends with them. For someone who is visiting Hong Kong but cannot make such a long committment in advance, getting a box of 德成號 egg rolls is not practical at all. Plus you are not guaranteed anything even if you try to line up early.
So I looked for the next best alternative on Hong Kong island and 齒來香蛋卷 is an excellent choice. They are a family run business where the owner's father essentially handed the business down to him. He continues to make the egg rolls by hand, one by one, and you can see him do it in the store. The female shopkeeper who handles cashier duties is very friendly and if you are fluent in Cantonese they are very easy going locals.
In addition to egg rolls there are a wide variety of Hong Kong Chinese style cookies and assorted pastries. You can buy savory egg rolls with pork floss in them, or the short or long length egg rolls that have some coconut flavors in them. The tins are your best bet because they provide sufficient protection if you are transporting them overseas....but I highly recommend you hand carry them, and not put them in your suitcase. Although they supposed to retain freshness for a few months, it is best to consume them within a reasonable timeframe so to ensure quality. They will surely be better than what you can buy at Chinese supermarkets in the USA.
Please continue to support this family run business, who could potentially be struggling with the ever increasing costs of rent. Without our support, traditional old style Hong Kong food and snacks, will slowly fade away with no heirs taking over. After all we don't want these wonderful traditional stores to be replaced entirely with bling shops and fancy restaurants...
