I've booked a table at 5pm by phone. The guy confirmed my name, time (7:30pm) and the number of people (5) via the phone call.I arrived at around 7:20pm and it was just closed!!! No one picked up the phone and the four of us just waited till we finally gave up hope! Lucky that it wasn't a dinner with clients, or else it would be even more awkward!How can a restaurant lock its doors even though they've confirmed bookings and ask people to come?! It's so ridiculous!

With so many new restaurants opening in HK, it seems like there shouldn't been a lack of dining options but after being disappointed by some of the new openings lately, perhaps it's time to revisit established restaurants like 121 BC which has been on my radar but somehow still haven't tried yet. I still remember my first encounter with the restaurant which was when I passed by after trying La Vache last year and was intrigued by the quaint and bustling scene I saw through the windows so I vowed to give it a try. Who knew it would take so long but at least it was well worth the wait! With a sister restaurant in Sydney, 121 BC serves family style Italian cuisine with an extensive wine list and a long communal table to match. The menu changes depending on the best produce available which is written in chalk on the wall and you can order the dishes a la carte or get the banquet menu which includes all 9 dishes with a * next to it plus dessert for only $450 per person. The banquet menu sounds like a great deal to me which is what we ended up trying!

We started with this colorful Stracciatella di Bufala which is a cheese produced from Italian buffalo milk using a stretching and shredding technique. The pairing of the soft fresh cheese with beetroot and balsamic resulted in sweet and tangy flavors that was appetizing to eat.

The Roasted Pepper Bruschetta with anchovy, chilli and aioli was surprisingly delicious even though I am usually not a fan of anchovy.

The Proscuitto di Parma with pickles and gnocco fritto was a bit underwhelming to me simply because you can put this together easily at home by yourself but at least the proscuitto was of good quality.

The Eggplant Fritti with thyme, asiago and spiced honey was nicely fried and by nature, eggplant absorbs oil very easily so it would have been easy to make this too oily but good thing that problem was avoided here.

The Octopus with tomato, squid ink, green chilli and crackling was my favorite dish of the night as I love octopus and it was cooked perfectly with a soft tender texture while the squid ink sauce was a delightful match.

The Caramelized Lamb Ribs with orange and caraway was another homerun for me as I loved the tangy orange glaze on the lamb which was crispy on the outside but a supple melt-in-your-mouth texture on the inside.

The Wagyu Skirt Steak with radish and bone marrow was surprisingly tender with nicely seared edges that was full of flavors so I thought the sauce on top was rather unnecessary.

We got our vegetables last with Zucchini Salada with mint, pine nuts and ricotta but it was a good thing as this dish served as a refreshing and light ending to our meal.

But the best ending to a meal is always dessert and both choices of Panna Cotta and Chocolate & Hazetnut Cremoso were irresistible! If I had to choose, I would go for the panna cotta with its rich milky flavor which combined with the coffee caramel sauce was simply heavenly to eat.

Verdict - I was impressed with the food at 121 BC which also offered a great value for money and the bustling ambiance is perfect for a casual night of drinking and eating with a group of friends. I did find it a bit noisy and crowded as the restaurant was quite cozy in space so I probably wouldn't come here on a date night as I'd prefer some place a bit quieter but that's just me as I did see couples sitting by the counter near the windows. I would most definitely come back to try the regional menu in the last week of every month which focuses on a specific region of Italy with a matching wine flight as well!

幾位女生選上的主菜可是一點也不清淡,在主理人推介下,點上了Caramelised Lamb Ribs, Orange, Caraway 和Wagyu Skirt Steak, Radish, Bone Marrow Butter。燒羊架是燒到離骨的程度,焦糖化的脆面,但肉汁還是鎖得很好。而和牛牛扒配上牛骨髓牛油,真的是美味得很,那入口化開的油脂有齒頰留香的感覺,配上用香草醬拌的小蘿蔔,小小酸香讓人更開胃,絕對值得推薦的一道主菜。再配上意大利青瓜的沙律和烤南瓜,醒胃得讓我們食得比平時更多!

女生們食飯又怎會少了甜品呢?餐牌上的3款甜品也食上了,意大利奶凍配咖啡焦糖,甜而不重奶味,焦糖味讓奶凍更香濃。而朱古力榛子慕絲,灑上了白朱古力和蜂蜜脆脆,食下去軟滑得來,又有點咬口,還帶著點點海鹽的味道。而最深刻的則要數上橄欖油蛋糕,意想不到的濕潤質感,配上雲尼拿忌廉、士多啤梨蓉和黑橄欖,甜中帶咸的感覺,讓人很有驚喜。

121BC位於一條不起眼的街道,要不是朋友相約在此晚餐,從沒有想過要走進這條小巷。老實說餐廳外的環境一點都不優美,門外還搭有棚架。 餐廳內是一張可以容納20多人的長餐桌,我們被安排於中間位置,左右都有不相識的人在用餐,這個我倒不介意。 門口傍邊的黑板以粉不寫上了當日available的菜式,餐廳的靚女侍應說他們的菜式每天都會有所不同,主要是看廚師在local market能找到什麼新鮮食材。我們點了Banquet Menu, 其實有點像tasting menu,只不過他們都是用sharing plate 的方式上菜,同樣可以試盡餐廳的拿手菜式。這實在太好了,不用苦惱要點什麼。 12道菜 (我只簡單介紹10款),每位$450加一。以下全是3人的份量。 頭盤是蟹肉多士,味道OK但蟹肉不夠多。 這是我最滿意的菜式。車厘茄全部去了皮,配上自家製的芝士和醬汁。是我試過同類型菜式中最好的。 帶有橙香和焦糖香的烤羊架。肉不多,每人一件好像不夠喉,但味道是好的。 非常非常非常嫩滑的八爪魚,配上車厘茄和墨魚汁,墨魚汁的味道香濃,大愛。 疏菜千層麵,其實只有兩層,但味道控制得非常好,是朋友的favouri

薄薄的一支支羊肋骨 , 別看它焦黑得有點硬 , 原來一咬便可把全條肉輕易地扯出來 , 咀嚼時除了可感受到焦糖化羊肉的酥軟筋香 , 還帶有橙皮及香菜籽的清純香氣。

卑利街斜路數上,走過去即時跟一堆食客對上眼的121BC為本晚目標。休閒風,有望街的一排平排座位,老實說頗有趣的。有如咖啡室,又不是咖啡室,說是酒吧,卻又不單是酒吧。有點反復說不清,反正都得一嚐才了解底細,那就來吧!我們準備好了。  以意大利家庭風料理為主,看不少客人來到都是點來分享著吃的,頓時多點份親切。來到這些地方,氣氛感覺絕對不能忽視,畢竟大家想舒舒服服談天說地嘛。店方指每月都會有幾日推出地方特色菜餚,當然也是出自意大利,就是地區分別。剛過去的23至28日就是Veneto為主題,雖然沒有參與其中,但這意念頗吸引的。Straccuatella, Beet Root, Balsamic, Basil $140  先來一份清新怡人的沙律起頭,Superfood紅菜頭當然是首選。Straccuatella取至Buffalo Cheese最中心的部分,細緻奶滑,香潤不過。芝味濃郁,但不會太鹹重,沒有過份調味,也不覺膩口。紅菜頭爽口無青味,濕潤好嚼,以黑醋調味,酸清開胃。配以羅勒的獨特香氣,就算澆上了橄欖油,都不算過份帶青帶膩。Octopus, Tomato, Squid Ink, Green

  先來一份清新怡人的沙律起頭,Superfood紅菜頭當然是首選。Straccuatella取至Buffalo Cheese最中心的部分,細緻奶滑,香潤不過。芝味濃郁,但不會太鹹重,沒有過份調味,也不覺膩口。紅菜頭爽口無青味,濕潤好嚼,以黑醋調味,酸清開胃。配以羅勒的獨特香氣,就算澆上了橄欖油,都不算過份帶青帶膩。

  平常吃的一支一支肋骨一般就是豬肋骨,羊肋骨倒是少見了。茴香辟羶提味,羊味濃郁,油份香氣持久不散。羊肋骨羊肉部分煮得酥化,外層略為帶脆,調味充足不過火。稍為帶點橙香,吃下去的時候酸酸甜甜,更能去走羊脂的膩感。

  和牛嘛,人在中環,扒房大把,有必要在這兒點嗎?當然了,因為這兒牛扒的沾醬是用到骨髓製作的牛油,怎能不一試?外層帶熟,中心還是粉嫩色澤,沒有不斷滲血水,熟度恰到好處。切得厚薄均勻,和牛肉沒有韌口筋位,保留肉香無雪腥。重口味或是愛牛味之人,再蘸著油香豐腴,潤口微甘的骨髓牛油同食,固然更為可口。膩的話,旁邊的伴菜應該就是良品了。

  來到甜品環節,意式奶凍來個變奏,來個咖啡焦糖浴,杏仁作點綴。吹彈可破的意式奶凍甜度適中,細滑軟嫩,奶味不會厚重過火。甜中略帶苦味的咖啡焦糖平衡奶膩,並且有著粒粒香脆杏仁加分。但說實話吃起來未有令人嘩然的感覺,定價也未免太進取了。

  朱古力加榛子,不就是萬人瘋迷的Nutella嗎?在121BC,那是甜香迷人的Cremoso,細滑之餘不會過膩,奶感不算重。黑與白,白朱古力脆脆怎會不甜口,但碎散摻合之下,一切來得自然不造作。海鹽的鹹味反差消去甜品的甜膩,讓人滿足,可惜單價貴得過份。
  讓人有點不習慣的就是餐牌問題,就只看到店中間黑板餐牌,冇圖冇真相。而且好像當晚客滿八九成,除非坐最近黑板那邊,否則……誰能看得到啊?

Burrata 吃得多, 但"stracciatella"呢, 又是甚麼? 原來就是Burrata里面軟綿香膩的部份。看似簡單的一道菜, 味道調整得恰恰好。醋不會太酸, 與橄欖油的香, 中合了stracciatella輕微的膩感。而stracciatella的綿軟, 又和紅菜頭的脆甜形成了對比, 口感超好。非常非常好吃的小菜呢。

不很喜歡吃小牛肉veal, 因為我不甚中意它的味道, 因此在菜單上看到它的話都會直接跳過去。不過這一道小牛肉切片配吞拿魚蛋黃醬、薄切了、拌上濃濃的醬汁在室溫下進食, 濕潤的口感和微咸的香, 鬆軟的肉質, 卻讓我驚喜不已。

讓人驚喜的還有魷魚。能擁有如此粗壯的魷魚鬚, 這隻魷魚一定不小。但是, 這魷魚做得非常柔軟, 入口輕輕咬幾下, 就吞了! 究竟是怎樣做到的? 我沒有答案, 但相信會很想回來再吃這魷魚吧。也是用了香醋和橄欖油作調味基本, 但加入了炸豬皮和蒜片, 這一道比起stracciatella那一道要濃香得多。多層次的滋味極為豐富, 難怪是人氣菜色啦。

主菜先來一個千層麵 - 有芝士的素菜。除了價格偏高以外, 還真的一個無可挑剔的千層麵呢。多重的蔬菜鮮味在口中混雜, 濃郁得不會覺得自己在吃素菜! 不同的用料也有點不同, 吃起來也很有趣呢, 一點都不比有肉的千層麵輸蝕, 而且少了一份油膩, 通體舒爽。

羊肉味濃郁, 獨有的騷味並不太會搶。附骨的羊肉應該是先煮後過, 外層微脆內部嫩滑的口感非常好吃。外層裹上的是橙味汁 - 是的又是我不愛吃的醬, 但配合起來又是意外的討好。微微的甜配羊騷, 蠻特別的呢!

和牛肉也非常的棒。牛肉的味道很重很香, 配骨髓牛油真的「無得輸」。

口味讓我愛吃牛肉, 但在這兩碟肉類之中選擇. 理性分析之下我會說, 羊肉更值得吃。當然最好還是要似我們, 一網打盡, 吃得更盡興啦。

兩道配菜個人都不太推荐。小黃瓜絲沙律的醋下得很重, 吃下去還蠻刺激喉嚨的。如果說想吃沙律解膩的話, ricotta cheese的份量不少, 也不特別會讓人有清爽的感覺。南瓜呢, 實在是非常非常的好吃, 軟硬適中, 南瓜本身極甜, 再加鼠尾草香和酸豆, 味道很豐富呢。只是, 定價真的有點太高, 份量好少啊!

甜品的環節讓人期待, 也沒有令我失望。每天供應的甜點都不一樣, 小黑板上也沒寫, 所以要向店員查詢呢。

我最中意吃的是意大利奶凍, 一口入就吃到很重咖啡味, 已經夠我愛上它。而且奶凍的質地也非常非常的滑嫩, 入口很快就化開, 留下奶香在舌尖, 非常迷人!

但不可不試試的是這一個聽上去一點都不甜點的甜點: 橄欖蛋糕。真沒想到橄欖也可以做蛋糕, 把它創作出來的那位一定是個天材! 先不說味道, 這蛋糕的質感拿捏得很棒, 濕潤, 有彈性. 是我很喜歡的口感。而味道之上, 幾乎沒有太多的甜味, 一點點的橄欖香, 很清新。配雲尼拿忌廉可以補足甜味, 士多啤梨對我來說卻是有點多餘了。

121BC的店員都非常健談, 也樂於和你聊天, 若是沒有太多頭緒要吃甚麼飲甚麼, 也不妨大膽請他們推薦一下。至從十一月去過芝加哥旅行, 才發現在外國請店員幫忙介紹食物是非常自然的行為, 而且他們也往往可以給予很好的意見呢。反而有時我和朋友花了時間琢磨好要吃啥之後就直接請他們下單, 他們才會覺得有點愕然啊。

It was a Thursday night at 8. My friend brought me to a small but perfectly formed restaurant on Peel Street in Central to have a taste of Italian dishes. What came next was the Vitello Tonnato, one of the well-known Piemonte dishes of cold, sliced veal covered with a creamy tuna sauce. I personally thought that the restaurant should have provided more bread for us as the veal with tuna sauce tasted better when it was with the bread rather than having it alone.
We also had the buckwheat polenta fritters with mustard cream and a salad with zucchini, mint, pine nuts and ricotta cheese. The former one was the most unexpected dish of tonight. By looking at it, I expected that the dish should be crispy, but after tasting, its saltiness and softness made me not to order this next time. The latter one didn’t taste better neither. The whole dish was again overshadowed by the saltiness of the ricotta cheese and the bitterness of the zucchini.

After trying these starters, we were served with the most-ordered dish of this restaurant, the Caramelized Lamb Ribs with Orange and Caraway. The burnt edges of the ribs have caramelized to a sweet crunch, yet they were not as tender as expected and the strong smell of lamb was all pervading.

Two Piemonte dishes then followed. First came was the octopus with tomatoes, squid ink and green chili. The grilled octopuses were tender and tossed up with the green chili. After having those salty starters, the spice of this dish is a good stimulation for you to keep on trying the other mains. Next was the Pork Ragu, pasta made with rich, flavorful pork-and-tomato sauce. The pasta here was chewier than those I had before and the sauce topped tastes excellent, making me not to add further seasoning onto it.

Then here came to my favourite main of tonight, the hanger steak topped with bone marrow and friggitelli peppers as the sides. The steak is medium cooked, leaving the texture buttery within and charred on the outside. The bone marrow toppings successfully enriched the taste of the steak but for the peppers, they would taste better if they were not over-charred.

What gives my day a perfect ending should be the ricotta panna cotta with coffee caramel and almonds. Compared with the hazelnut and chocolate cremoso and the olive oil cake with vanilla cream, the ricotta panna cotta is more silk-smoothly and creamy with a melt-in-mouth texture. The coffee caramel and almonds on top was a delicate touch of the dessert. But if you have a sweet tooth, you will definitely fall in love with the chocolate cremoso.

Setting:
I pretty appreciate the idea this restaurant suggested – sharing is the most fundamental to one’s dining experience. No matter you were sitting at the bar or at the banquet table that runs the length of the room, when you were in this restaurant, you had a feeling like you were home. It was not just only a place for you to eat, but also a place for you to be relaxed.

Food:
It is true that the ingredients used here are fresh; however, most of the dishes served tonight were either too salty or over-charred. If more attention is paid on that, I am sure more OLs like me are attracted to enjoy their night here. One more thing that I would really like to credit was that the menu of 121BC changed weekly. It would definitely be one of the reasons for me to come for other Italian dishes.

Service:
The service here was very impressive as well. All staff is knowledgeable about the menu and the wine and some even provide lengthy lessons on the wine we tasted. The staff patiently introduced the dishes we had and kept showing her care on whether the dishes favor us or not, which could make us feel really warm in this two-hour dining experience.

For desserts I liked the chocolate mousse which had a tad of sea salt in it and the olive oil cake had a strong orange peel taste but no olive oil could be tasted.

We always go to Peel street to have a drink, as it is pretty cool and no cars in this street at night.

I like the interior of 121bc: simple but with a caracter. This long table is quite attractive so we book with my friends to try.

They are quite popular so we had to book like 3 days in advance but we didnt regret it!

The dishes are from approx 110HKD to 150HKD, all Italian food with product fresh from the market, and you can feel it!

They change the menu every week, like in Europe when you go to family restaurant and yes I kindda felt the family atmosphere.

We had the banquet menu, 450HKD per person without wine. It is quite a good deal as you have 11 dishes!! So you get to try everything and get so full after haha 


I'm a cheese lover so the croquet cheese was so yummy with the homy sauce. Then we had some squid very soft and the lamb ribs! for meat lovers you gonna be crazy about it, they marinated with orange and it is simply refine and delicious. The zucchini salad was raw and unfortuanly I could not eat it because of my stomach. But the tomatoes with creamy mozzarella is my favorite, they put some bread so makes a crunchy dish.
We had as well some green pepper and a lasagna of veggies, very tasty! 
The presentation of the dishes are so artsy!

For the dessert, we had a chocolate mousse italian style and panacotta caramel with almonds. The panacotta is very milky but the caramel too sweet for me.

Overall, we had a lovely evening, the ambiance is very cool, everyone in the restaurant seems happy and create a nice mood! We had good Italian one by the glass as we are not big drinker. 

Definetly a good place to hang out with friends! not too noisy so you can chat and the plates are perfect to share. 

Maybe next time I do my birthday there in the private room

Overall too heavy handed seasoning.We ordered just a few dishes:- bruschetta with sardines - extremely salty and i was left with a mouthful of oil... Couldnt finish even 2 pieces becuz it was too salty- broccoli with almond and lemon cream -bthe flavor mix was almost right... Except that the lemon cream was... Too salty- orecchiette in pork ragu - the best dish of the night, not too salty, maybe they shld just focus on pasta??- wines - for by-the-glass selections they feature italian natural win

I sincerely don't understand why so many western restaurants in hong kong like to make things so salty, flavors so pronounced, maybe the ingredients aren't fresh enough? My friend said "they probably want you to order more wine" but if so it's probably the most despicable and silly thing to do, to lower your standard for a quick buck. Me i just think some chefs have damaged taste buds...

I believe the menu changes often here, so the dishes I ordered I am not sure whether they are still available. But I guess most important is not the dishes itself but the philosophy of the managment. As long as fresh tasty ingredients are sought and well executed by the chef, a changing menu just brings more excitment each time

On the day of my visit, I had a mint and pea lasagne. The serving was small ( but not tiny), and the lasagne is cooked just right ( not too soft) and whilst usually a lasagne is a heavy dish, this lasagne is delightfully refreshing and light. A must try if they have this dish on your visit. Next I tried a steak, again serving is not too big, but the meat is very tasty. Too often in Hong kong you get a steak that is cooked well  but the problem is the meat itself lacks taste and you need a gravy to add taste. The steak here is simply grilled, without any heavy seasoning. This is the best way to cook good meat, as you can taste the natural sweetness of the beef. For wine, I had something which is supposedly in white red wine ( T'ara ra 2009, Campania Greco); so out of curiosity I ordered it and it is very nice wine, sweet, yet refeshing with a flowery aroma. I enjoyed my glass of wine very much. One of the unique part of this restaurant is the selection of wine by the Glass. Whilst many restaurants do have a good selection of wines, but when it comes to ordering by glass, the selection is mimimal, like one white, one  red, one rose. But here. most of the wine selection are available by glass and they stock wines from boutique wineries from Italy.

題外話/補充資料: If you like to enjoy a glass of wine with a simple but tasty meal, this is the place to go.

I had heard about this restaurant through a friend, so thought I'd give it a try, and I'm glad I did. I went with my partner, and we were advised we may need to book in advance other-wise we may not get a seat, so I booked a table online using their website - very handy.We had booked for 7.30, but arrived earlier at around 7.00. We had booked for 7.30, but arrived earlier at around 7.00. We were instantly greeted by a very friendly Italian (I think) man. He then walked us to our reserved table, along the window counter facing outside. We were first talked through the wine list, followed by an explaination of the menu, which was all drawn on a chalkboard at one end of the restaurant. A nice touch. 

The wine list was huge, and my knowledge of Italian wines is limited - so I waived down a waiter who came to help. To my surprise he was not Italian, I think he was either Australian or South African, however he seemed to know his stuff, and suggested a different glass for each of us after we told him what we liked. 

He hastily returned with our wines, and we ordered food.

The waiter advised that the dishes are intended to be shared, so we would need around 2 per person, we asked for some suggestions, and he strongly suggested the lamb ribs. We ordered a portion of the lamb ribs, a broccoli dish, a steak and the cabbage salad.

While we waited we sipped away at what we began to realise were fantastic wines. As we weren't sure what they were I asked the waiter if he could show us the bottles - and he did. I was drinking something called "Cantina Giardino Nude", and my partner had a "L'Arco Pario".

The food then arrived, first came the broccoli. The dish was small, however a good size for two to share, and it was delicious. Next came the lamb ribs, and I'm so glad the waiter suggested them. They were covered in a fantastic citrus coating - I think I could eat just those ribs for the rest of my life. Finally the steak came out, accompanied by the cabbage salad. As my partner is vegetarian, I (un)willingly ate all of the steak, while she had majority of the cabbage salad. Top notch. 

When the waiter came to clear out dinner plates, we were asked if we wanted any dessert. After little contemplation, we decided on the "zuppa inglese", which we learned is Italian for trifle. We ordered more of the same wine also - couldn't resist. 

Dessert arrived, and it was good. Lady fingers which were soaked in liqueur of some kind, I think cherry, custard cream and chocolate cream.

Overall, I'm so glad I have found this place. The service was amazing, the food was awesome and the wine was outstanding - 10/10.
