After many mediocre meals in HK it was nice to finally enjoy some decent food. Between us we tried the shepherds pie, steak diane and lancashire hotpot. All got the thumbs up. Shepherds pie was absolutely delicious with a sizeable portion. I was even more impressed by the way they made me an impromptu cheese platter for dessert despite this not being on the menu. It was really a nice lunch since I have been longing to try this restaurant. In comparison with my experience, this one seemed like better than Yorkshire Pudding, the one in SOHO district. Reaching Wan Chai, we finally did find this remote restaurant, though plenty of time was spent. When we arrived, there was not anybody (I mean any customers) inside. So we immediately looked at the lunch menu. Mmmm... there were many varieties of lunch sets. Hesitated by those varieties, we each ordered a different set of meal. I got a bangers with mashed potato and my mom decided to have a ravioli. Afterward, we observed the atmosphere inside and I requested for visiting the second floor of the restaurant. Everything was in British style with huge London art deco for the paintings and walls.
Okie dokie, it came my pumpkin soup. I really liked the taste of the texture and heat of the soup, particularly in such a cold and gloomy weather. Next, there was my main dish (sausages with mashed potato). It tasted fantastic and was exactly the same with the ones I experienced in UK. Eventually, I ordered an iced tea. The size was unimaginably big but I still managed to finish it.
Generally speaking, I really appreciated the ambience of Limehouse. When I was strolling, I kind of felt like being in England. Besides, the facade of Limehouse symbolized simplicity and that's what I wanted. Overall, I would give a 99/100 for this British restaurant.

The deco on the outside is very nice, but once you get in it's a bit disappointing. The chairs are quite dirty and in general the vibe is like any normal cafe. In terms of the food, the soup was so mediocre - it was vegetable soup. You can drink that pretty much everywhere in Hk. The salad I had for lunch was nice. The lettuce was fresh and the chicken was quite tender. Too bad it couldn't make up for the average setting and service. The lady who served us was friendly but very rush. She stomped

船街的盡頭,新張了一家門面並不怎麼起眼的英倫小店。據說店主旅英多年,返港後因放不下心中的英倫情懷,便開了這間小店。Lunch set menu雖然抵食,但似乎與英倫菜的關係淺薄,既然來了,也不介意多付一點,來嚐嚐他的招牌菜式。卻沒料到主餐牌也只是簡簡單單一張紙,也未嘗不好,至少不必在大把選擇面前左右為難。前菜揀了鴨蛋配鴨肝的新奇組合,膽固醇固然是爆燈的了,但仗著年輕的我倆,也無懼那麼多,好吃就已經很滿足。有點失準的是,鴨肝表面煎得不夠脆,似乎是落了海鹽來調味,但咸度就不是很均勻;但瑕不掩瑜,配上十足流心的鴨蛋黃,滿口的脂香與鮮美。老實說是蠻膩的一道,但就是好吃,膩也認了。當然也少不了經典的炸魚薯條,從未踏足英國,只能和在香港吃過的出品胡亂比較一番。這裡的出品炸粉薄身而酥脆,內裡的魚肉應該是雪凍的鱈魚,雖然沒甚鮮味,但勝在肉質嫩滑,於外層的酥脆口感形成對比。炸魚外皮是少了點醋香的點綴,也沒有綠豌豆的搭配,總感覺是少了點甚麼。薯條則比較細身,入口也不覺油膩,再淋上適量辣椒粉來調味,就算不正宗也夠美味。雖然這個炸魚薯條只算得是小食,但也夠飽肚的了。導致主菜牧羊人派端上來時,我們只能勉強應付。

雖然這個炸魚薯條只算得是小食,但也夠飽肚的了。導致主菜牧羊人派端上來時,我們只能勉強應付。但這牧羊人派又著實令人驚喜,外層的薯蓉熱力十足,表面烤焦的部分口感微酥,帶少許焦香;下層的薯蓉軟滑細膩,薯味香濃。而羊肉餡肥瘦相宜,入口肥美富脂香又不嫌油膩,充盈著羊肉獨有的羶香,好吃到即使已吃撐也難以停口。

最後的甜品English trifle更無敵,三層分別是紅莓醬、vanilla custard和鮮忌廉,每一層味道都不含糊,紅莓酸爽清新,雲尼拿香氣宜人,鮮忌廉幼滑而飽含奶香,要不是我倆實在太撐,這件甜品一定要encore的。

港人的英倫情懷,我自未知。興許從來都未曾呼吸過自由的空氣,所以也不懂得眷戀了吧。

吃畢走出這英倫小店,離開幽僻的船街,就又回到聒噪的世界中去了。

Don't worry, I think I have a recommendation for you: it's Limehouse on Ship Street, Wan Chai. Hiding behind the narrow and slightly steep street, you will immediate spot this rather outstanding white structure with several bright spotlights shining in all directions.

It somewhat reminds me of a small cottages near the coast but instead all you see from the inside would be concrete buildings instead of the great blue sky and sea. Decor was simple yet themed in a way that gives you a very homely / cozy atmosphere. Tables were arranged spaciously (or perhaps it was due the layout of the two floors structure) that my friend and I have personal space without whispering.
The menu was very focused with a handful of starters and mains for your selection. Oppps, forgot to mention that this place offers English or what I like to call English-inspired cuisine. I personally prefer a more focused and specialized menu because I rather have quality food than a wide selection of items that are bad poorly executed. Anyhow, we started our meal with Petite Fish and Chips. The fries were alright, freshly fried and with the vinegar dippings, it was quite a treat. As for the fish part, they were alright. Don't expect a thick battered fish though, I think somehow they adapted to the Hong Kong style of which less batter was used. I personally prefer thickly battered fish and chips, then again, each to their own.

Duck Liver and Egg. Alright, to me the star of the show was not the duck liver but the egg part. A small lightly seared duck liver placed on top of a medium cooked egg shaped like those served in an Sausage and Egg Muffin from McDonald's. (I think I will get that for breakfast on Monday ... humm ... just mentioning makes me crave for it!) The combination of egg with the stronger duck liver flavor made it a dish I would return for. Did I mention how I loved the semi-liquid egg yolk that went quite went with the liver as well? Simple yet delicious.

For mains, I ordered the Not Exactly Bangers and Mash. Why I ordered that? Thanks to the interesting name of the dish, simple as that. So why is it called this funny name? Apparently the bangers were not prepared in a very traditional way or not even considered as bangers. Traditionally, Bangers or Sausages are made by stuffing the meat and fat into a tubular castings made from intestines of the animal. However, nowadays it often requires certain tools to help stuff the meat into the intestines, some are quite huge and requires time to prepare. After a brief explanation, apparently the bangers we ordered were made slightly different, instead of stuffing the meat into the intestine casting, the meat was "wrapped" by the casting. If you look closer at the picture below, you can see how loosely the sausages were. Definitely Not Exactly Bangers and Mash. The sausages were quite good, yet different mainly because of the texture. Give it a try! What I find to be a good addition to the sausage was the use of tiny bits of fat. Without the tiny bits of fat, it would taste so different, the tiny little fats rule! What about the mash? hummm ... I wish I could have been smoothly and more flavorful.

My friend ordered the Lancashire Hotpot. For those unfamiliar with this dish, it is a rather traditional offering from Lancashire, England which consisted of lamb and onion, topped with sliced potatoes before being baked under low heat for quite a long while. Yep, it is quite that simple to make based on my knowledge. However, I have to admitted that I have no tried this dish too many times but I don't really recall it being so watery as served here at Limehouse, the jus should have been a bit more thick like a stew right? The meat was tender and flavorful, yet not overly gamey, but I really wished the jus was thicker!

I am not sure what got into me but I really feel like writing today! So what am I going to talk about and blah?? Lamb! I might have mentioned it before (forgot which London post) but anyhow I will say it once again. Some people dislike lamb or mutton for its gamey flavors but ever wonder why some have stronger gamey flavors then others? Based on what I have been told (please correct me if I am wrong), male lamb produces a stronger gamey flavors than female lamb. Also, lamb under the age of 6 months would produce less or no gamey flavors due the lack of hormones in their system. In other words, it is the hormones that produce the the gamey flavors and lamb usually starting reaching that stage beyond the age of 6 months when puberty starts. Mutton, which is lamb beyond the age of 12 months usually, definitely has stronger flavors than lamb, both female and male lamb wise. Perhaps you can ask for female lamb under the age of 6 months when you order your dish next time? HAHA ... good luck! (Again, I am still doing some research for verification of my statement above, so for the time being, please treat the info as my own)
Time for dessert! I had the lemon tart which was slightly too tangy for my liking. If you are a fan of lemon tart and citrus flavors, this tart is for you.
Wow, home made Apple Crumble! A simple dessert to end the meal with. It was great, not overly sweet and the crunchy texture together with the soft diced apples mixture made it ... yum! A scoop of ice cream would be nice right? My friend C is a big fan of Apple Crumbles so I took a small bite and let you enjoy the rest.

Was it very authentic? Honestly I am not sure, perhaps as I mentioned English inspired kind of authentic? In any case, great service and lovely location with great decor (and unpretentious) in my opinion. Planning my revisit for casual lunch soon. This place to me is a causal joint when I want to enjoy a simple meal with close friends.

散叫的食物先來,就是那隻流心的鴨蛋黃,未食已令我興奮莫名。事實上,蛋白香口,蛋黃滿載蛋香,加了點海鹽調味,層次更佳。當然,要伴著另一主角鴨肝去吃。小小的鴨肝,是煎得外脆內軟,跟鴨蛋十分合拍。只是,鴨肝始終不及鵝肝的甘香。

朋友的主菜是豬腩肉沙律,孤陋寡聞的我,很少見這個配搭,因豬腩肉這不健康的東西,跟沙律的健康形象,好像格格不入,不過又幾有趣。這兒是把豬腩位拆絲,把皮炸至脆口,再混合大堆的沙律菜。估唔到,爽脆的沙律菜,配合香脆的豬皮,口感很對辦,而一絲絲的豬肉,感覺不會太肥太膩,亦令沙律不致太寡,都幾好。

而我閎三文魚意大利飯,色水是吸引的,都好香,但個人認為太過淡口,同埋米飯咬口不足,並不是我喜愛的意大利飯。還好,三文魚的質素不太差,可以多吃幾片。

午餐加三十個大洋可享有甜品,不過跟餐的甜點沒得選擇,就是一碟兩件的迷你撻和一小件朱古力餅,前者的撻皮尚算脆口,朱古力餅層次頗佳,味道則可以再濃郁一點。

餐茶係呢度既弱項,用上一包茶包去沖一壺茶,效果肯定不會理想。所以,我的熱檸檬茶,唔合格。

店主很大方的讓我們到處睇睇,周圍拍照,我也不客氣地胡亂拍了一大埋垃圾相片,揀了些相對似樣的分在Blog上。

Sadly what we found was a list of dishes with British names but not quite authentic ingredients. On the menu was "Not-quite bangers and mash" but this was not quite what we were after as we really just wanted proper bangers and mash. The fish and chips were made with mackerel instead of cod or haddock. My friend and I opted for the Shepherds pie as the most authentic sounding.. It was quite tasty but it was not value for money. I was quite disappointed by the size of the portion and the actual meat content, so was my friend who ate his in about 5 minutes. My partner had the steak diane which was made with flank steak, an unusual choice of cut. It was ok at best but again it was tiny. It was served with cold peas and very messy presentation. We did laugh that the bad presentation was quite authentic for a Brit pub.

We decided to share sticky toffee pudding for desert, again it was really small. good taste but didnt feel homemade, It was a real shame.

On the plus side the service was good. The owner/manager seemed eager to please and was very friendly. The wine was good but it was the last bottle so we just had one.

The place is very low key which is rare in Hong Kong and we liked that, although it is not very comfortable. It could benefit from more comfortable chairs.

I wouldn't dine there again. Unfortunately with the Pawn down the road it doesn't compare. The Pawn has that Gastro pub feel we expected from Limehouse but didnt get. Its probably not really for Brits.

睇雜誌見到好似好靚咁,就同朋友黎食。第二樣唔講,真係去到門口都已經嘩一聲,去咁多餐廳都無見過咁骨子既味道,好鬼有外國風情,加埋入面班鬼佬客,氣氛一流。坐低叫完野飲就睇餐牌,又嘩一聲,真係簡而精,頭盤主菜甜加埋都唔夠十樣,好彩都揀到野,唔係就真係黎飲野咁。叫左份炸魚薯條同批,似唔似英國呢﹖其實我覺得唔似,不過唔緊要,係好食果種唔似,某程度上絕對好食過係英國求其入一間餐廳既味道,起碼條魚真係新鮮魚,漿夠薄,魚夠嫩,個批既餡都好好,夠香。食物環境都好,就係服務要努力少少,全場得一位男士走黎走去,雖然佢好落力,不過爆起上黎都真係坐一排都無人理。

一直存在有個不切實際的狂想,總會想著灣仔船街的樓梯,是一條回到過去的樓梯,行到最上的終點,就是回到過去二戰時代....日前在船街找吃,本來目標是一間意大利小店,當看見餐牌的菜式,好像沒有吸引力,當行到去船街樓梯口,發現旁邊的舊樓地下,化身成為一間西餐廳"Limehouse",雪白的外表,木門木窗眶,加上黑色而帶有點Vintage味的大階字體,第一時間的感覺:我是否身處英倫?其實外表似一間時裝小店,多過一間餐廳,當入到去餐廳,簡單的佈置,自然光由外邊折射入內,感覺優閒柔和,店內播著輕快的旋律,如置身平日的倫敦Notting Hill一帶.無須多講,餐廳的菜式就是英國菜.本身傳統英國菜根本沒有甚麼特別地方,如果是Modern British就另作別論,此店的餐牌上,既沒有約克郡布甸,亦沒有全天候早餐.炸魚薯條只是頭盤,其他的還有華杜夫沙律,鴨肝鴨蛋,大蝦cocktail.主菜方面有牧羊人批,Sausage配Mash,Steak Diane,說是新派?又不是,說是傳統,亦不算.簡約就差不多.中午時段有set lunch供應,兩道菜加飲品價錢八十八塊,包餐湯,主菜幾款之中選一,是日有煙三文魚三

餐湯是番茄紅菜頭湯,質感適中,番茄的酸給紅菜頭的甜中和,兩者之間皆能和平共處.

在散餐菜單上點了炸魚薯條,值得一提的是此小店的Fish & Chips,不是用常見Cod,而是用上Mackerel,回想十年前在倫敦旅行,下塌青年旅舍在Russell Sq,附近有間叫North Sea的餐廳,是一間頗為有名氣的海鮮店,其賣點就是有多款魚類選擇,當中包括Dover Sole,Rainbow Trout等等...都可用來做炸魚薯條.真是大開眼界.後來上年再度英倫,到訪Convent Garden附近最有名的炸魚薯條店Rock & Sole Plaice,魚類方面也有很多選擇.不過在香港,此情況則比較少見.炸魚就炸魚,都是果舊魚.

見到炸魚外表,有點不對勁,Chips不是Chips,只是Fries,炸魚比較細小,白醋並不是與生俱來,要特別要求才有.遑論可加Gravy,Mushy peas.如果撇除傳統包袱,此炸魚做得有水準,脆漿不厚,入口酥化,包著的魚肉不及鱈魚的嫩,但魚味較濃,嚴格來講,這個不是地道英式炸魚薯條.話須香港曾是英國殖民地,但有關的"餘孽",已經賣少見少,又或者英國菜真的不值一晒吧.如果在香港吃過最近似英國味道,就是蘇豪上的Yorkshire Pudding.

味道是很個人,還包括一點感情因素.老實說此味絕不算是天下美食,但我喜歡,尤其是在葛迪遜公園球場旁邊的小店,買下之後拿去球場看台上吃,一邊吃一邊支持自己的球會,當球隊打勝仗,你會覺得美味,如果輸波,食龍肉都沒味.

主菜的pasta是Strozzapreti.外表如長形的卷心粉,索汁力強,配上煙味特強的茄子,茄醬,金不換等材料,深慶得人,味道酸甜得來帶有煙燻香,更有金不換的香料味,此道Pasta,層次複雜.令人開胃.

始終是新開不久,有很多大小事也未上軌道,如想要杯凍茶,連冰塊也沒有.啤酒方面也只得Boddington,期望下一次到訪的時候,在各方面也會有所改進.
