I failed to photograph the dessert, but the greek desserts were fantastic. Seriously, Greek desserts aren't preceded by their reputation, but what they have at Souvla was lip-smackingly good. Thinkg lemon meringue cream tarts, moist mediterranean sweet/fruity sponge cake (I forget the names), baklava, etc.

So yeah, needless to say, this place comes highly recommended.

Concept Creations, the group that runs Chicha, Frites and Tapeo, has brought us a new haunt in the heart of Lan Kwai Fong called Souvla. Named after the popular Greek dish of open-spit grilled meats, Souvla is a pioneering restaurant which serves Greek food with a modern twist. As there are only a few Greek restaurants in Hong Kong, this hip eatery caused a bit of a buzz amongst the media when it opened.

The restaurant has taken over the large space that used to be Harrington's. Honeycomb-shaped lattices and golden honey timber is used in the restaurant, as the design was inspired by Greek honey, which is considered by some to be the best in the world thanks to the unlimited summer suns. The restaurant had a lively, upbeat ambiance, but my friends found the thumping music from the downstairs club, 7th Heaven, slightly distracting.

Service at the restaurant was friendly, responsive and hardworking, and when our dessert took a long time to be served, the chef came to our table to personally apologise to us, which was a very kind gesture.

(1) It was a Friday night gathering with my friends, but all three of them were over half an hour late! Fortunately, there was a very lovely waiter who chatted with me for some time, and I also had a glass of Super Paradise Punch ($100) to cheer me up. Made with Metaxa 7 and pineapple, peach, orange, lime and rose hip juices, the drink was a bright and fruity concoction with just the right level of alcoholic kick.

(2) A plate of warm marinated olives with lemon fennel ($40) was swiftly brought to our table, and we found flavours enticing and well adjusted.

(3) The Cypriot Salata ($95) was beautifully done, with the grains pulses, nuts and pomegranate adding a range of lovely textures.

(4) The Horiatiki ($90), classic village salad, followed. The feta cheese was fine and flavourful, and the other ingredients were also delicious.

(5) The octopus with thyme, rosemary, parsley and lemon ($225) was sheer happiness on a plate. The octopus was magnificently crispy and surprisingly flavourful - in fact, it was so umami-rich that a friend who took a bite without looking at it asked if it was a piece of pork!

(6) The Kefalograviera cheese with rigani and fig marmalade ($130) certainly did not disappoint. Kefalograviera is a type of hard cheese made with sheep's and sometimes goat's milk. This grilled cheese was comfortingly soft and smooth, and the sweet homemade fig marmalade brought out a beautiful salty-sweet sensation. My only complaint was that it was a tad too salty.

(7) I have tried different versions of pita bread all over the world, and the grilled pita ($30) at Souvla was one of the best I have ever eaten. Lightly grilled and buttered, the pita bread was decadently fluffy and soft and was truly impressive! A portion of hummus ($75) was ordered. It was an accomplished work from the kitchen, and the amount of lemon juice, tahini and garlic was spot on.

(8) Our pork souvas ($65) arrived in a cute takeaway box. These mini pita wraps were almost addictive - the pork, potato chips, tomato, parsley and some lahanosalata formed a mouthwatering combination of flavours, and it is a must-try dish if you ever come here!

(9) The glacier 51 toothfish ($395) which followed was unforgettable. It seemed a bit expensive to us at first for its portion, but the taste completely justified the price tag. Each bite of the fish was exquisitely juicy and tender, and the light seasoning accentuated the fish's naturally delicious taste.

(10) The spit roasted pork with honey mustard skordalia ($255) was juicy and full of meaty flavours. I wished there was more tang in the mustard skordalia though!

(11) A photo of this medium rare rib eye steak with anchovy parsley butter ($385) was very well received when I posted it on Instagram and Twitter, and everyone commented on how beautifully pink-middled, char grilled and evenly sliced it looked. However, while the flavour of the steak was marvellous, its texture was a tad too stringy.

(12) Our dessert was called loukoumades, which were little fried cinnamon-flavoured balls dipped in syrup and yoghurt. These puffs were certainly tasty, but were perhaps not as mind-blowing as how our waiter described them to be.

The bill for our Greek feast was around $600 per head, which included a 10% tip as the restaurant doesn't impose a service charge. Souvla offers a set dinner menu for four persons or above at $455 per head, and also offers set lunches during the week and a Sunday champagne brunch. I will probably come back to try the set lunch or weekend brunch - stay tuned!

Having been a fan of Concept Creations' Chicha, Frites and Tapeo, I've come to expect equal standards from their new Greek restaurant Souvla. Entering from the street up a set of staircase that was labelled 7th Heaven Club, my parents thought I was taking them to a raunchy joint rather than a nice meal out. With the club from the right hand sidestarting to warm up for the evening with familiar beats pumping through, we turned left instead and entered a world of red hues, warm wood panels, beautiful lighting, cushy seats and well spaced-out tables, accompanied by background funky tunes. The space was long and somewhat narrow but not claustrophobic, and we were shown to our long table at the back where we could catch glimpses of the spit roast going round and round.

Initially we thought the menu was pretty hefty to get through but afterwards realised that 2 or 3 of them were stuck together by the magnetised cover. The wine selection was mostly Australian, French, with a couple of Greeks and other New World wines to make up the list, and the cocktails/ouzo list was adequate and sounded fun. I ordered a Wonkey Donkey that was fruity and sweet, the only thing was that it came in a pretty tiny glass which made it a touch expensive at $100. (Mayta opposite does a bigass pisco cocktail for a much more reasonable price). We also ordered a medium-priced bottle of French red that went down well with everyone, so we ended up polishing off two bottles instead. Tap water, no fuss from the waiters, everyone was happy and ready for a chow down.

We studied the menu and went for a bit of everything from each section. The waiter offered us hummus which wasn't on the menu to go with the pita bread, which was well seasoned, not overly smooth and paste-like which meant there was a good texture to it. We tried the dolmades, which made for a good appetiser. The only thing with the dolmades was the vine leaves were a little fibrous-y and bitter, but the rice stuffing was well cooked and seasoned.

We opted for the saganaki over the grilled halloumi because it was more unusual, and the dish didn't disappoint. Despite being fried, the cheese wasn't greasy, and it was balanced well with the lemon juice and pickles. The salmon marinated in ouzo didn't taste much of alcohol, but the portion was generous, and the mint leaves, small yoghurt dollops and pickled beetroot complimented the oily fish perfectly.

For mains we opted for the kingfish which I don't recall trying before (at least not a good one that left an impression), but realised afterwards there was also a toothfish which sounded even more exotic (save it for next time). The kingfish was a white, slightly oily fish like a cod, but with a slightly less firm texture, and it was cooked to perfection, lovingly seasoned with a green coating on the outside (someone enlighten me on what this is?), and the flesh was tender, moist and very fresh. There was a small jar of hummus to go with it though it probably wasn't necessary and only distracted from the fish itself.

The spit roast chicken was a good-sized dish as well, succulent and well-seasoned meat that made everyone happy. The slow cooked lamb was worth the anticipation since first seeing pictures of it here. It was divinely melt-in-mouth tender despite not being a fatty meat, and as the lamb-y gamey-ness was not too overpowering, the chef correctly avoided the heavy-handed seasoning that sometimes ruin the dish. A spoonful of yoghurt can also help to balance the flavours for those less fond of the strong lamb flavour. For lamb lovers, this is a perfect dish.

Despite all the food above, the 5 of us somehow still managed to order 4 more gyros to share, 2 pork and 2 crab. The first waiter forgot our order but the second waiter made sure they turned up in a jiffy when we reminded them. (It also gave us a chance to finish off the wine as well.) The gyros came in a nicely printed (but probably not very environmentally friendly) bento-box, and the gyros had a nice balance of fresh salad leaves, chips and fillings. Don't expect it to be oozing with grease, sauces and bursting out of your mouth like the street-style gyros you find in the states, this one is much more refined and sophisticated, aptly so for this type of restaurant.

Overall, we were happy with the decor and ambience, the service, the selection and quality of food, which I would describe as upmarket Greek, and went home with a very happy belly.

Service was great. All the waiters were friendly and very attentive.

Great experience overall, and of course, the bill reflected all at the end. It was about HKD600 per person including a glass of wine for each of us. Tips were not included so everyone put about another HKD60 on the plate.

So there you have it.

Honestly, we were expecting a small Greek restaurant with just a few tables covered in blue and white so we were pleasantly surprised when the stairs led us up to a 150-seater restaurant and bar. We were led to our sofa booth table, staffs were welcoming and the red in the decor brought warmth to this spacious spot. I was delighted to know that there’s an area on the side which can be cornered off as a private room for big parties.I love how playful the menu is, with cute illustration of famous

I love how playful the menu is, with cute illustration of famous Greek Mythology characters (J: Hercules looks like some Disney lead character, and he does! With that dashing grin). We ordered a few dishes with the help of the friendly staff

The saganaki (fried cheese served on frying pan) was a must try, the firm yet gooey dollop of golden goodness has intense cheese flavors that went very well with the sweet fig marmalade and a drizzle of lemon juice.

Scallop was grilled to perfection with its soft raw centre while the creamy manouri cheese with tsoireki (sweet fragrant Greek Easter bread) crumbs brought out the simple subtle sweetness of fresh scallop. The almond skordalia served underneath the scallop was delicious! Almond skordalia is a popular Greek speciality which is thick almond and garlic dip it was tasty without overpowering the scallop.

The souvas, mini pita wraps, had lamb, herbs, tomato, mustarad aioli, French fries and onions wrapped in pillowy bouncy pita bread arrived in the “bendover box” **geeky laughter** (bento- greek style). The lamb was very tasty though the dish was a tad too starchy between the pita and the fries.

The slow cooked lamb was incredibly tender and was saturated with intense flavors of lamb without being too gamey, any heaviness was offset by a dash of lemon and a dab of yogurt. We also ordered the Cypriot salad on Viv’s recommendation (Viviano Romito, owner of the place.) He said this salad compliments the lamb really well and he was so right!! The salad was light and delicious with contrasting textures and flavors with pops of pomegranate seeds and crunchy nuts and seeds, sweet raisin, cumin, fresh herbs, dash of honey, and the all refreshing yogurt.

Golden Greek time- What’s not to love about this dish? Initially I was a bit hesitant about it since I don’t eat anything deep fried but it wasn’t greasy at all. The vanilla mastiki ice cream with chocolate center was slightly chewy like Turkish ice cream and not overly sweet. The honeycomb on the side added crunch to the divine dish. And did I mention salted caramel? I almost my quarter in the rich and luscious salted caramel. Needless to say, I was very satisfied at this pointThe bill came up to be just under $250 per person, which was well worth it! Souvla was definitely something above our expectations in terms of quality of food, ambience and service! The dishes came out swiftly and even the hot dishes were pretty quick. We loved most of the dishes and I can’t wait to go back and try their baklava cigars! I LOVE baklava!!
