Summary: Consistently interesting food elegantly prepared. Focus on aged/cured/fermented food, but appealing dishes even if you’re not a fan of fermented vegetables or cured meats. Not the cheapest place, but the uniqueness (and taste!) of the food justifies it. Throw in an insane wine list menu (60 wines by the glass??), and 12k Francs offers something different for even the most jaded HK diner. Try them for lunch firstI’ve been here 4 times now – 2x for lunch (this review is on lunch), 1x for Brunch, and 1x for a Wine Pairing Dinner. I’ve enjoyed every meal (least impressed by brunch, and most impressed by the Wine paired dinner), but I’ve avoided writing a review because still couldn’t get figure out how much I actually liked the restaurant. They change their menu constantly (I haven’t seen the same menu items more than once), and I’ve felt my experiences there have been a bit disjointed. The wine dinner was terrific but many of the wines we were supposed to taste were changed last minute, and I constantly had to check which wine course we were on. I also enjoyed brunch, but the food was a bit of a mixed bag (try it anyway), and not everyone loved their main course. For the price, which will run about HKD 300-400 per person for dinner, and around 200 for lunch, some consistency should be expected.Today’s lunch: Pate - was great but if you’ve tried a good pate you know what to expectTartine with Ricotta Cheese – so-called friend devoured the whole thing without letting me try, but she liked itSausage and Shrimp –a modest name for a delicious dish. Two giant shrimps cooked with spicy sausage on a bed of brilliant vegetable ragout. The ragout made the dish for me: tomatoes, eggplant and other earthy vegetables simmered down in olive oil, but still maintaining their flavour and veggieness. The shrimp and sausage soaked in what is essentially chunky veggie gravy you’d think would be too heavy, but was simply delicious.Wagyu steak done two ways – grilled and braised. Friend said grilled was better (of course) but I tried the braised and was delicious if you like this style – meltingly soft and juicy.I like 12000 Francs a lot. I want to love it but it’s like that almost-perfect movie with that one annoying scene you just can’t get past. I love their insane wine list, the fact that I never have to wait for a table, and that their dishes are consistently interesting and usually delicious. I hate that their service can be all over the place, that some dishes are just fine, and that I can’t be sure what I’ll get if I bring guests. In fact, one friend tried it without me and said it was one of the worst lunches he ever had at this price point.Bottom line though, is that I LOVE fermented/cured/aged foods, so I have been secretly willing to give this place as many chances as it needed to impress me. After this last lunch, I think I can finally declare that even if the food and service can range from just fine to great, the inventiveness and execution of the dishes are a cut above the regular standard of mid-high range HK western food, and deserve to be tried.

Thanks to Restaurant Week, I was able to try out another restaurant on my to-dine list with an affordable price for a weekend lunch.Ricotta FritterBeing a cheese lover, I adore this Empanada style ricotta and lime fritter dearly. The fritter was fresh fried and was so crunchy that I could cut it open without much difficulty. I also enjoyed dipping the whole thing in the courgette puree, they just went so well together. I ended up wiping the plate clean with the fritter.Beef CheekThis braised Australian wagyu was so tender that it felt like melting in my mouth. The sweet potato mash topped up the taste and added colour to the dish. Love the fried onion on top.Spiced Creme BruleeThis is the dish I love most. The pumpkin pie spiced cream on top of the creme brulee (made with rich cookie butter custard and caramel) just made everything so much nicer! I would love to come back just for this amazing dessert! Definitely a nice finish. However, the portion of the meal was a bit small, especially after I did a 4-hour hike in the morning... 繼續閱讀

Our large group of friends were comfortably accommodated for dinner at two high tables of six. We had organised a fixed menu with the restaurant beforehand to cater to everyone’s tastes. We had a pleasant evening with delicious food, good wine and good service. The restaurant itself was busy for a Friday night and had a great vibe. I would come here again. For starters we enjoyed shared dishes of:- tasty house sourdough bread with foie gras parfait- apple, fennel and salmon salad - mushroom montanara (pizza)- potato soupThe starters were served at a good pace - we had the foie gras and bread first, then these were cleared to make way for the salad and montanara. The table was then cleared again for the soup. I loved the mushroom montanara. And while I usually can’t eat too much foie gras, the parfait form makes it lighter and easier to enjoy. For our main course we shared - roast lamb shoulder - roast chicken- smoked mash potatoes- roasted Jerusalem artichokes- roasted heirloom carrotsThe lamb shoulder was especially tender and tasty and generous in size, we had some leftover for takeaway. The chicken was also delicious and tender. Finally for dessert we had lovely warm Pecan Pie with ice cream. P.S. There was a per head cost for food, and an option to package 2 drinks for an additional cost - this worked well for our group as some drink wine and some do not. We also could manage dietary restrictions as the restaurant provided alternative dishes for those people (we had two people in our group who don’t eat seafood) 繼續閱讀

I’ve always wanted to try 12000 francs so decided to go for lunch today. The food was even better than expected and the lunch set was great value at 135 dollars for two coursesFor the starter, I choose the hummus and taro chips. The taro chips were nice and crispy and went really well with the hummus My friend chose the squash salad and it was very soft and tasty as wellThe mains were outstanding as well. I had the Japanese chicken thigh and it was grilled to perfection. The skin was crispy while the meat was tender. I loved the polenta with its flavours of sweet corn. I finished every last bite and can’t wait to come again! 繼續閱讀
