I had a long day at work and decided to stop by Coffee Hwajeon before heading home, enticed by their tantalizing photos throughout the Elements mall. The restaurant itself has a pleasantly bright and calming aesthetic. There were booths to sit with your shoes off, walling you off from other patrons and giving you a nice sense of privacy. The waitress seemed busy but put down our orders quickly and efficiently. We had trouble deciding with the food but ended up getting the traditional rice cakes

We had trouble deciding with the food but ended up getting the traditional rice cakes to share. Unbeknownst to me, they had a red bean filling. The rice cake itself isn’t too sweet and is on the dry side. They were decorated delicately with flowers and petals.
We also both settled for the carbonara with tteokbokki since one of the dishes we wanted - a croissant - was sold out. The chewy texture of tteokbokki mixed well with the saltiness and creaminess of the dish. The bacon was generously sliced and complemented the pasta nicely too.
For drinks, my companion ordered a lemon marmalade soda and I had the caramel shake. They are on the sweet side but nevertheless would work as a dessert or as a companion drink for a meal.
Finally, we shared the strawberry and cheesecake waffle. The waffle was crisp and hot, topped with strawberries, cheesecake and ample amounts of cream. Together they created a delightful combination of textures and flavors that are sure to please anyone with a love of decadent desserts.
Overall, it was a very pleasant visit to Coffee Hwajeon. I look forward to returning to try the rest of their menu, especially the fried chicken and croissants! I’m glad I found this little sanctuary right outside the MTR station.
