I am quite a big fan of afternoon tea but the Peninsula Lobby was not really on my to-go list because I was always put off by the long queues. Finally decided to come try it out for our anniversary celebration. We were just shown this menu so it was a very easy decision to go for an afternoon tea set for 2. Had to admit it was really very expensive for an afternoon tea set at a price of $718+10% for 2 persons! The server brought us each a pack of high-quality cards as souvenirs to take away.Welco

Very soon we were served the welcome drinks. They were so kind to offer one each for my two kids as well. At first I thought they were kiwi juices. They were delicious of course, not particularly sour despite the presence of grapefruit juices.
Very pretty napkin and tableware, with a small spoon for one of the items on the afternoon tea set.

The teas were served first with very pretty tea ware. We ordered almond tea and raspberry tea. The almond tea smelt really good. We found it better than the raspberry tea, which of course was also very rich in raspberry. The almond tea went very well with the milk, which was really really smooth.

Then it took a while for the afternoon tea set to arrive. It was so nice of them to prepare a chocolate plate with "Happy Anniversary" on it with a small candle. The candle was unlike those normal candles out there which didn't stink at all when burning/burnt.

1. Almond biscottini with crema di cioccolato
They were some crunchy almond cookies with some chocolate cream inside, with nothing outstanding.
2. Tiramisu tart, espresso jelly
They were not so rich in tiramisu and I didn't find the espresso too strong in caffeine, with nothing outstanding either.
3. Panna cotta with mango
This one was really good. The panna cotta tasted very rich in milk and was ultra smooth. It was really delicious by itself. The mango jelly tasted very good too.
4. Mini pan d'oro with clementine
The orange jam was lacking while the cake itself was very average.

Savoury was much better than sweet!
(from left to right)
1. Dill marinated cucumber, carrot bread, ricotta, tomato
Very light and refreshing. The carrot bread, although not so rich in carrot, was very fresh. The ricotta cheese tasted very good. The very small tomato on top was very cute and fresh.
2. Prosciutto di Parma, butter choux, crispy quinoa
Unfortunately I had dropped some crispy quinoa onto the floor. The butter choux was very very thin and crispy. The Parma was fresh indeed and could tell that the quality was high. Delicious and special.
3. Polenta custard with butter-fried sweet corn
I found this a bit too salty but it was actually delicious with very thick and smooth custard.
4. Smoked salmon on turmeric bread with Sicilian lemon pearls
The turmeric bread was very fresh and the smoked salmon was of high quality. The Sicilian lemon pearls were so fresh and sweet to balance the slightly salty smoked salmon. Delicious.

Raisin scones with clotted cream and organic strawberry jam
By the time when we had the scones, they had already cooled down so we asked for re-heating them. The scones were HUGE, although I didn't find them particularly better than those scones at say Island ShangriLa/Four Seasons/MO. They did taste good because they were really hot but other than that I couldn't tell that they were particularly outstanding. The clotted cream was not so good because by the time we ate it it had warmed up! It was not until we had the second portion of clotted cream which was still cool and quite solid that we got to experience the great combo of clotted cream + scones again! The strawberry jam was quite good although a bit sweet. The clotted cream or the organic strawberry jam seemed to be not as outstanding as those at other hotels of similar ranking, say the clotted cream offered at Island ShangriLa or the rose petal jam at MO!

Citrus chocolate
I wondered how come this item seemed to be missing from the afternoon tea set and when asked they said this item was supposed to be served while checking out. They had thin and crispy chocolate coating with some chocolate paste inside (not so rich in citrus though).
Overall, I must say that the quality of the food was not particularly good. The sweet items were quite disappointing indeed, definitely not as good as those offered at Four Seasons/MO or even Le Salon De The de Joel Robuchon. The savoury items were better(a lot better than just those average sandwiches offered at MO) but still not as special and elaborate as those offered at say Le Salon De The de Joel Robuchon! Regarding scones, they were huge here but not particularly outstanding especially when compared with the accompanying rose petal jam at MO or clotted cream at Island ShangriLa (but the scones were way better than those at Le Salon De The de Joel Robuchon and especially Tiffin (which were the worst I had ever had)).
That said, service was really top notch. One of my kids dropped her napkin onto the floor and a server handed me another because he said that napkin was dirty after dropping onto the floor. His offer made me feel so warm and cared. Such service was really so hard to find elsewhere.
The environment was no doubt top notch, with the very beautifully decorated antique interior of the lobby of such a 6-starred prestigious hotel. There was a live band playing music upstairs. It was so hard to find similar live band elsewhere - I recalled it could only be found at Island ShangriLa, not even Four Seasons (just a piano?) or MO.
However, given the very long queues, the price (which seemed to be one of the most expensive in town) and the relatively less outstanding food, I think it would be worthwhile to come only once in a very very long while on special occasions.
