Sat upstairs sharing a table with other patrons. Ordered Urinating Mantis Shrimp in Chili Salt (椒鹽瀨尿蝦), Crispy Fried Noodles with Pork(肉絲炒麵) and Chinese Preserved Liver Sausage and Pork Ribs Steamed Rice in Clay Pot (臘腸排骨煲仔飯). Food was poor to say the least! The shrimp dish was delivered to table half cold, obviously been standing around. The shrimp flesh was a dull, soggy texture and definitely wasnt fresh. Overall the dish did not taste of chili salt in any way.
The clay pot rice was a disaster. The expected charring of the rice crust on clay pot rice should be thin layered, crunchy and tasty when freshly served. Here the residual crust was over an inch thick in depth and badly burnt giving the rice a smelly pungent burnt aroma. Not fit for human consumption.
The patrons sharing our table also had a bad experience. They ordered Fried Oyster Cake(炸蠔餅), Preserved Sausage and Meat Clay Pot Rice (臘味煲仔飯), Grilled Eel Clay Pot Rice(鱔魚煲仔飯). Oyster cake was all flour and dough and miniscule bits of oyster. It tasted bland. The food on the rice pots was so little, it was laughable they had to ask the waitresses if there had been a mistake in the order. You got what you ordered was the reply.
We all were first time customers of this place and definitely last timers.
Also, it was advertised the lowest cost of a rice clay pot on an external banner was $18. This wasnt seen on the menus inside and actual lowest cost was $20, so some discepancy here or probably counting on the patron to feel sheepish and reluctant to walk out.

Now you know why people queue for Hing Kee Restaurant (興記煲仔飯).
