There are only a few places that serve great Spanish tapas in HK, and unfortunately I can count them all on one hand. Catalunya is definitely one of those places. After many disappointing visits to some places around Soho/Central, I decided to book Catalunya. We went on a Friday so we had to book a few weeks in advance, but it was well worth it. The bar was buzzing and we decided to have a drink while we waited for our table. We decided to just share a bunch of tapas, as we were just a table of 2
We decided to just share a bunch of tapas, as we were just a table of 2. When I come back in a bigger group, i'll definitely try some of the mains.
Pa amb tomaquet with iberico ham - delicious starter! we might not have needed this after everything we ordered, but it's very traditional with Catalan meals apparently, and I can definitely see why! Would rather have tomato bread than plain bread.
Bombas - these were very yummy, the meat and potato go so well with the sauce, but definitely very filling. We only ate half of the third one.
The other spanish tortilla - recommended because of it's elbulli influence, this was such an interesting dish. It's basically a 'deconstructed' omellette, and while its appearance may throw you off, it was so yummy.
catalunya tomato tartar- this was also super suprising! If it didnt have 'tomato' in the name it could almost be MEAT! It tasted great.
the bikini - so many people have raved about this, and now I know why! While it sounds so simple, it's like a very posh ham and cheese toastie, and it's so addictive, we ALMOST ordered one more.
Gambas al ajillo - garlic foam sauce... enough said. AMAZING
Suckling pig tapa - must order, didn't want to miss out on any suckling pig! This was delish, very moist and not dry at all, cant wait to try the WHOLE one!
We had a great server that evening, He was really knowledgable about all the dishes, and recommended most of them and we obviously had a very good meal. Will definitely be coming back. While the dishes are a bit pricey, you really get what you pay for. The ambience, the food, the servers, the chefs background of course. You could really see an influence in some of the dishes. The cocktails that we had very tasty as well, I had a Mistery backyard, and I love that they lit it on fire. All in all a great experience, and definitely wouldnt mind coming back for either a few drinks and tapas or for a big dinner with more friends!
