Located a couple of blocks from the Yuen Long MTR station, Chi Ka Yan Restaurant was the first dining establishment that we came across to one Saturday evening. We didn't have a specific restaurant in mind when we went to Yuen Long for dinner. We figured we'd walk around the place and see what's available. We were trying to decide whether to cross the road in search of good food when the aromatic scent of Chinese food assailed us. We followed our noses to a little side street and saw this establ
We started off with some appetizers - stir fried chicken with tofu.
We were thinking of ordering duck, but the helpful waiter suggested we get chicken instead as that was their specialty so we did.
Except for the unappetizing chicken head, it was very tasty and we managed to finish each little chicken part. The first to go were the liver and gizzard which were served on the side.Then the spring rolls came.
They don't look like your average spring roll and they don't taste average either. They were delicious! Oily, yes, but amazingly tasty considering it only contained mushrooms, carrots and chopped cabbage.We were still gushing about how wonderfully tasty the spring rolls were when the sweet and sour pork arrived.
The pork was soft and tender and you can really taste the sweet and sour sauce in every bite. I'm used to having only bell peppers, carrots and pineapples in my sweet and sour pork, but this one had apple slices too. It added a sweeter twist to the usual sweet and sour taste. Very yummy.
The table across from us had hot pot which also looked good (although we didn't get to try it). This place is well worth going back up all the way to Yuen Long for, if only for their amazing spring rolls.
