After a day of hiking and water sports, I was ready to take the ferry back to HK Island when I realised that I had half an hour to kill before my ferry came. As my friend and I were strolling down the dimly lit street along the seafront, we came across this humble dessert shop and decided to treat ourselves to something sweet before the end of our Cheung Chau excursion. There were tables and stools inside the restaurant but we were too overwhelmed by the display of dessert pictures which span across the entire wall that we did not even think about sitting down. The dessert choices offered ranged from red-bean crushed ice drinks to the traditional black sesame soup. My friend informed me that this was actually the most well-known shop in Cheung Chau for the infamous mango mochi, a must-try for visitors to Cheung Chau. Thus naturally, I went for their mango mochi but I opted for the purple sticky rice skin instead of the regular pale skin. It was only $14, such a steal! XP The owner of the shop is super friendly as well. It was such a heartwarming experience!
The outside of the mochi (black glutinous rice skin) was thin enough to provide the slight stretch and yet thick enough to give texture and structure to the mochi, while the mango core was generous and slightly tangy, giving the dessert that extra freshness. It was such a delightful treat that I regretted not getting more to bring home. It was a marvellous experience and I would definitely go back to this shop next time I visit Cheung Chau.
