In which case, if the management of this new outlet of Koh Thai are relying on word of mouth to build their reputation, then they need to seriously re-think their game.

As soon as we walked into the almost-deserted restaurant on Sunday evening and asked for a table for two (no prior booking) you'd have though we were asking for an audience with the pope. We asked if there might be a table inside and were told instantly that they were all reserved (even though we could see none were occupied). After frowning at the reservation book for a couple of minutes, the young maitre'd marched away without a word of explanantion - we just assumed we were meant to follow her.

Okay, so admittedly we are a little on the large side, but she led us to the smallest and most inconvenient outdoor table in the restaurant (about the size of a card table). We sat down but before ordering asked for a larger table and were moved to a much bigger two person table which would surely have been the most logical choice in the first place. In the outdoor area of the restaurant, they have a lot of fans to try to keep customers cool and large parasols to keep them dry in case of a sudden downpour - but fans are rarely that effective in keeping people cool. On top of that, in some areas the tables were in virtual darkness and the waiting staff (lots of them but they seem to be very young and inexperienced) had to hold candles for customers to see the menu items - surely a couple of table lamps would be a good idea?

On the upside, when the food came (and be prepared that courses arrived in no particular order - our appetizer came last) it was excellent. The Thai pomelo salad is fresh and had a perfect dressing, the Gang Penang Gai (chicken curry) was equally good. Nothing new from a Thai cuisine perspective but at least, for the standards, we felt as though we were in good hands.

We were finished within 90 minutes (and had the food arrived earlier, we would have been quicker) and honestly would not want to relive as we departed we noticed that the tables inside the air-conditioned restaurant were still empty.

If I do ever use Koh Thai again, I will go with their delivery service.
