Azabu Sabo has many things to celebrate of its popularity, the pasta dishes though, were not one of them. As a Japanese eatery/ cafe that serves pasta, it's often hard to imagine its attempt to make something authentic out of it. At a setting that seems contrived and unmatching, its dessert section is oddly satisfying in a sense. Its shaved ice desserts, in particular, I have heard, are wonderful. A friend for afar have said these good words with a joyous face and an expression I have only seen in the midst of blazing hot summer and a snow-cone in her hands. That, is something inspiring, and upon several visits, I realized that snow-cones may be considered as summer quenchers, but shaved ice desserts are a completely different case...

On several occasions where the above photographs were taken, the shaved ices have been wonderful. Constructed more than just architecturally sound, their tastes happen to spring our palates across the board, into dessert wonderland as well. The GREEN TEA + RED BEAN SLUSH is nowhere close to a slush. The bowlful of shaved ice, flavored with Japanese matcha, offered the slightly bitter aftertaste, but the accompanying syrup and the stewed adzuki beans round out the grassy taste on the tongue. The house-made soft serve ice cream, drizzled with the same green tea syrup on the ices, is soft and pillowy. Even though ice cream on shaved ice may be a little overwhelming to tackle, plus with the melting ice you're also working hard with time as well...Worry no more, the bowl in which the ices are served in are chilled in advance, and the ices are rather firm to begin with. There is no need to worry your ice to melt into a pool of liquid within seconds.

While Green tea and Red Bean is the popular combo at Azabu Sabo, my personal favorite is the RED BEAN + SOYA BEAN POWDER SLUSH. The stewed adzuki beans are there, accompanying the shaved ice, which is now flavored with a darker syrup the colour of Maple Syrup but tasted reminded me of Molasses (not blackstrap). The deeper caramel taste of the syrup slightly clings onto the tongue but quickly spreads out as a spoonful of shaved ice melts with it. The Soya Bean Powder is made by toasting the beans and grinding them to powder. It has a rather nutty taste to it, allowing a nut component to the dessert.

MIXED BERRIES SLUSH is the commonest among all choices. As much as I like berries, I have resented many cough-syrup tasting slushes over the years. It took quite some courage to give in and try, and I wasn't disappointed here. The syrup is not overly sweet and it goes well with the ice cream too. The berries chosen are macerated and taste slightly sweet. Seasonal Favorites here at Azabu Sabo include this "POMELO AND MANDARIN ORANGE SLUSH"...I consider it a misunderstood one, since there is hardly any pomelo in it. In fact the ice cream tasted of Yuzu Citron, as the slightly bitter peel is ever so flavorful and cuts through the creaminess of the icecream base itself. The shaved ice, flavored also with condensed milk, matches with a tartness only found in Citrus syrup and what I can only recognize as canned Mandarin orange wedges. I can't say I enjoy the orange wedges, but the sweet-tart two-way punch is superbly executed in this dessert.

Every now and then the craving will hit, and although I admit I've had a better GREEN TEA + RED BEAN SLUSH elsewhere, for a quick quench of a slush craving, it's hard to say no to Azabu Sabo. Don't hesitate to ask for an extra cup (or cups) of Green Tea (eating shaved ice can bring you a wave of chill...) Service vary depend on time of day as well. If you can, ask for a booth inside, they are more comfortable and roomy.
