Yardbird has grown on me since my first visit. When it first opened, I did not know what the hype was all about. I am not a big fan of yakitori. However, the food here is good. As I have said many times, the food at a restaurant is what defines a restaurant. At Yardbird, they do all the other little things pretty well too. This makes for a great success and fantastic choice for a casual bite and drink on any given evening in Sheung Wan/Central Mid-levels. I suggest that one is in the mood for st
Yardbird is located on Bridges Street and is one of the few restaurants in Hong Kong which remind me of my days living in New York. When I come and dine, I feel like I am back in New York. This is not a place that local Hong Kong-ers would enjoy - Yardbird is CRAMPED, loud and sorry, it is a walk-in restaurant. Walk-in? I do not think there is a Chinese translation for this word.
That said, after about probably my eighth visit at Yardbird, I feel like I should share some of my thoughts on this delightful small restaurant as I should not really keep this jewel to myself.
Although Yardbird serves yakitori, it reminds me very much of the vibe I used to get at one of my favourite casual dining spots in New York called Casa Mono (has no relation and Casa Mono serves tapas). This would be an "it" restaurant in cities like New York, London, Los Angeles or Miami. It is credit to the Hong Kong food and beverage industry that Yardbird is a Hong Kong creation (as far as I know). If Yardbird were in New York, it would probably score a solid 24-25 for Food on Zagat's. Probably deserves one Michelin star in Hong Kong, or anywhere else in the world (besides Japan).
So what's good here? Let's see... Nothing I have tried so far is bad. The menu is relatively simple. The specials are pretty good and refreshing for the returning diner like me. My favourites are the: Chicken Oyster, Chicken Gizzard and the Akagai. Yardbird also serves a KFC, which is in fact fried cauliflower, which I think is creative. Yardbird is the only place in town that I would consider ordering cauliflower at all... Some people like the Meatball, which comes with a raw egg dipping sauce.
For those unfortunate Westerners who have not come here - you are missing out on probably one of the best places in town. Avoid coming with your local Hong Kong or Mainland Chinese friends, who would have little or no appreciation of this great creation (unless they were educated in North America). There is a downside for those who have financial constraints, Yardbird is relatively overpriced if you consider the portions of food or drink you get for the amount on that shows up on the bill. Nonetheless, if value is perceived not only in the cost of ingredients, but in the overall dining experience, Yardbird certainly provides one that is hard to beat in Hong Kong.
