Although I had to work on a Sunday, I still had to satisfy my craving for good food. Because I work in the area and remember that I saw a post on Facebook about a newly opened Taiwanese restaurant, so I asked my coworkers if they want to order take out together. Luckily, a few of them want to eat Taiwanese food, so I called the store to order food.Unfortunately, they only have pick up for take outs, but the restaurant is not that far away, so it is fine. Unfortunately, they only have pick up for take outs, but the restaurant is not that far away, so it is fine. If they have delivery service for take outs, I bet there is going to be a lot of people ordering from them.
We ordered quite a bit. One Taiwanese Stewed Pork and Egg Rice, three Taiwanese Pork Chop with thick Egg Noodles, one Taiwanese Pork Chop with Rice, two Deep Fried Chicken Wings and one Deep Fried Fishballs.
The person on the phone said it will take about 10 minutes to make, so we slowly headed over to the store. When we arrived, a person who looked like the owner said that we will need to wait for another 5 minutes. Since we were not in a hurry, so we waited for a bit. While we were waiting, I noticed the shop’s décor is very retro and vintage. From the decorations on the wall to the seats and tables, they are all retro-looking and vintage designed. It felt like I went to one of those old eateries in Taiwan, very nostalgic. When I saw the owner spent so much effort into the décor, I felt more and more anticipated about the food.
When we got the take outs, we cannot wait to head back to the office for the food. I noticed the portion is quite good. If it is a set with a main dish plus a drink for $43 dollars, I think it is a pretty good deal.
First up, the Taiwanese Stewed Pork and Egg Rice:
Finally, some real Taiwan flavors in Hong Kong. The stewed pork was really fragrant, very tender and most importantly has authentic flavors. The pork was diced into mini cube sized from the pork belly area, so there are parts of the fat still sticked to the meat. It seemed it was slow cooked for a few hours and put a lot of effort into making it. The only thing is it is not as oily as the same kind of stewed port in Taiwan. Personally, I think that stewed pork must be a bit oily in order for it to be really fragrant and authentic. The stewed egg is quite good and the take out also came with a small green bok choy. As a lunch box, it is not a bad choice at all.
Next, the Taiwanese Pork Chop with thick Egg Noodles:
The pork chop was deep fried, and it was made slightly different than other deep fried pork chops I had. The pork was probably marinated for a period of time and then coated with a light batter before being deep fried. Although the batter softened a bit by the mosture, inside the box, the pork itself was very tender and juicy inside. The sauces that were used for marinating the pork can all be tasted. It was very delicious.
Originally, the set had a choice of thin or thick noodles. Personally I liked thick noodles, so I chose the thick noodles. The set comes with some stewed pork in side as well, but I think it was too small in quantity. Even though the portion of the noodle is good, but the stewed pork was not enough to add enough flavors for the noodle; consequently, the noodles are rather dry to me. If there is more stewed pork on top, it bet the noodles will taste much better.
The one with the rice is pretty much the same. There is not a lot of stewed pork, so it is not what you expect from a traditional Taiwanese Stewed Pork Rice.
Finally, the Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Deep Fried Fishballs:
Surprisingly, these two were very good. Both are deep dried with more deep fried garlic. The chicken wings and fishballs paired superbly with the deep fried garlic. It was so yum. Moreover, the chicken wings were really nicely fried. Outside is crusty and inside is still very juicly. If you feel that you need a bit more to fill out your belly, these two snacks are excellent choices.
If you feel you eat too much deep fried food, you can order to Pear Water at the restaurant, which is a great alternatively for Pop Drinks. However, if you want other fresh juice, I will recommend the Fruit Juice store just a few stores to the right. They have different kinds of freshly pressed juice and are quite cheap for a big cup (around $18 dollars).
After trying this restaurant out, I will definitely come back for more when I crave for Taiwanese food in the area. If you are ever near by, please go and try. It is definitely worth a try.
