Having failed to secure a table for Saturday night dinner at the fully booked Bistecca we chose a sister resteraunt Blue Smoke which was half empty, for very obvious reasons.
We were promptly seated at a comfortable window table with nicely subtle lighting.
The drinks were a little slow to arrive but were ice cold which was much needed on a hot summer evening.
We ordered a half slab of baby back ribs($128), beef brisket($178),coleslaw($28), pickles($18)and creamed spinach($38).
We asked the waitress to check if the spinach came with cheese. She went away to check with chef and confirmed that the dish contained just cream and spinach, no cheese.
The food arrived within what seemed like seconds. The ribs had come from an extremely small malnourished animal, were dry, tough and cold.
The brisket had some moisture and bbq flavor left in it, but as this was also served cool was a joyless eating experience. Our guess was that all the meat had been precooked, and had been sitting on it’s culinary death row for a long time waiting for some sucker to release it.
The coleslaw had nice creamy and crisp texture which was much needed considering the sorry state of the meat but was a rather mean portion, even BlueSmoke, or BS for short which is quite fitting, could not mess up the pickles, but the spinach came covered in cheese contrary to what we had been told, but actually was well prepared with a nutmeg finish.
Half way through the meal we decided to cut our loss, ask for the meat to be wrapped up,and went home to console ourselves with a bucket of Haagen Dazs.
It really was a joyless experience for us.
$613 was a rip off.

So I'm a vegetarian and my boyfriend always takes me to vegetarian restaurants so I thought it would be nice to treat him to a nice meaty meal.
We had heard mixed reviews on Blue-Smoke mostly that the food was amazing, but others that it was horrible.
As soon as we were seated we were served a complimentary table dish consisting of deep fried mac n cheese balls, tempura fried okra, and pickled watermelon skins.
The pickled watermelon skins are smth I'd never heard of before and never would've thought to like, but they tasted amazing!
In combination to the mac n cheese balls and the fried okra we were exremely please before we ordered, and even asked for a 2nd plate of the snacks to which our waiter obliged.
For starters we ordered the nachos (with beef on the side) and my bf ordered a bowl of the chilli.
The nachos had barely any cheese on them, and very little tomatoes or salsa so ended up being quite dry. The beef brisket on the side my boyfriend said was cold- as if it had just come out of the fridge. Perhaps they usually place the beef on the nachos and grill it with the cheese and so it's usually hot- but cos we'd ordered it on the side, maybe they'd forgotten to heat it up.
For the chilli my boyfriend was extremely happy, said it was really good with lovely flavours and served hot.
When our mains arrived- I ordered a Southwest Salad, and him the pulled pork. For sides we chose the mac n cheese and the creamed spinach.
The salad arrived with bacon on it which hadn't been listed on the menu so I had to send it back and ask them to return it vegetarian. The chef himself came out with the 2nd salad and asked us if our food was OK which I was really impressed with and really nice of him. The salad turned out to be very nice- with whole avocados (usually restaurants skimp on the slices).
The mac n cheese was nice. Baked with lots of gooey cheese and served hot which I thoroughly enjoyed. The creamed spinach was served fresh from the oven and not what I expected from a typical creamed spinach- there was barely any cream, but it was topped with melted cheese which gave it a really nice texture and flavour.

Unfortunately when my bf ate his pulled pork, again he said the meat was cold. The flavours were nice but it was served unheated but we were too embarassed to say anything, as we had already sent the salad back.

When we made the reservation the hostess informed us we could use our uBuyiBuy coupon for the discount, but when the bill came there was some discretion as it was not valid on that day. Our waitress later came with the and said they made an exception for us and we could use the coupon as the hostess had already told us we could, which we appreciated.
All in all, for me personally the Southwest Salad, the mac n cheese and the creamed spinach were delectable. I would go back just for the pickled watermelon and fried okra as they were delicious and I havn't seen that anywhere else in Hong Kong.
For my boyfriend, the chilli was delicious, but the braised beef and pulled pork were served cold and shortly after returning home he was stuck in the toilet for a few hours- no doubt from cold meat.
We would give this place another try, because the service was obliging but probably not for full price in case the meat turns out cold again.
I would go for the vegetarian options, but my bf would be iffy about ordering the meat (odd thing to say about a BBQ restaurant I know!)
We understand that they are newly opened- but come on, who serves meat cold like that, you'd expect more from that price.
Maybe we'll give this place another try in a few months and see if they at least learned how to serve hot meat.

I got hooked on Southern BBQ during a business trip Dallas Texas about a year ago. Since returning home to HK I have gone out for it a couple of times and only found disappointments.
After hearing a lot of recommendations from some of my American colleagues I decided to give Blue Smoke a try. Admittedly I was a bit apprehensive getting into the buildings lift as it was a bit "dodgy" but once we arrived on the third floor I really thought i had walked right back into Texas. It smelled like a real smoke house and I was impressed by the classic American rock music that was playing.
When we sat down my buddy and I ordered a couple of beers. He complained that they should have more American beers but I enjoyed the Samuel Adams which was served with some complementary snacks.
We shared some ribs, brisket, sausage coleslaw and baked beans. I thought the BBQ was spot on and I especially liked the sauce. To my taste though the slaw could of been tangier and vinegar based.
We had a couple more beers and than a Boker's bourbon on the rocks when the chef walked over to see that we were having a good time. I was impressed to learn that he had worked in one of my favorite restaurants in New York and some great places in new Orleans. I didn't even know BBQ places had "Chefs" What really surprised me is that he gave us a homemade looking fresh blueberry pie and some ice cream which he said go perfectly with bourbon.
Though the service seemed a little bit too casual I am definitely going back when the BBQ craving returns.

To sum up my review in one word for Blue Smoke B-B-Que, DRY! I am sure Mochachocolata Rita * and Gastronomous Anonymous would agree with me. A fairly new joint located in the heart of LKF, do come here with an empty stomach for some hearty food selection but remember to order some drinks to go along with their rather dry signature ribs.

According to my information, the group behind this venture, the Dining Concept, spent some efforts on the decor with wood panels imported from old cottages in the US, at least I have been informed. I have to admit that I enjoyed the setting, just like a southern bar per se.

We started off with Train Wreck Thick Cut Fries which LITERALLY arrived within 1 minute after we ordered. Can I have that deep frying machine? Did I mention the fries were not even of optimal temperature? Come on, within 1 minute from ordering? At least TRY to wait for a bit longer so it seemed to involve more work I bet whoever ordered this after us will get their fries within 30 secs! Is there a contest among themselves on speed? Anyways, did not really have the WOW factor but it was hearty indeed. More bacon bits would be nice.

How can such a hearty meal go without wings, hot wings to be exact. Flavors were alright but the wings were fairly dry! (time to start counting how many times I will use the word DRY in this post!)

Next was the corn bread and it was ... wait for it ... dry! I really did not mind having some melted butter as the dipping to make it more moist!

Crispy Mac and Cheese, not a typical way to describe Mac and Cheese right? Well, it was not ordinary mac and cheese anyhow, they were served in the shape of a sphere, the size of a table tennis ball. In other words, deep fried Mac and Cheese to be exact. However, the batter was rather thick with only a tiny bit of macaroni inside it. More cheese sauce on top would not hurt since it was ... wait for it ... dry! On the plus side, Interesting interpretation / creation indeed to go along with beer!

Mashed Potatoes ... alright, it wasn't dry for a change but more butter would be wonderful. Texture was mushy but not very creamy in my opinion.

We ordered both the Kentucky Style Australian Lamb Ribs and the Full Slab of Baby Back Ribs. The flavor of the lamb ribs were rich but it was rather ... wait for it ... dry! On the bright side, it was less dry then the Baby Back Ribs!

As for the Baby Back Ribs, how dry and tough was it? S had to fight against it as shown in the picture with her fork and knife. (please check blog for the picture)

We were surprised to find the ribs being so dry so we asked the staff. Apparently, it was suppose to be dry or at least intended to be on the dry side from the slow smoke process. I learn new things through my food adventures that was one of the new lesson I have learned regarding ribs. In any case, I still prefer my ribs to be meaty and ... wait for it ... not dry. The flavors were alright but I got too distracted and physically exhausted from chewing that I could not finish up my portion of the ribs.

So how many times did I mention the word DRY?
Likes:
- Nice Decor (I don't know what else to say)
- Crispy Mac and Cheese - interesting interpretation (at least to me) and good to go with beer (although it bit too dry / lack of cheese sauce in my opinion)
Dislikes:
- Many items were relatively ... wait for it ... DRY! (ie; Corn Bread, Hot Wings, Lamb Ribs, Baby Back Ribs)
Avg Spending: HKD 200 - 300 per person

We arrived smelling delicious BBQ scents from the kitchen and was excited, and the place was charming, comfy and casual.

While waiting for a friend, we started with an order of fries with cheese, which arrived within seconds after we uttered our order to our server. We suspected that the fries were not freshly fried. However it tasted decent and it turned out to be the best dish of the night. If cheesy fries is the best dish of the night, you can imagine how bad it was.

We ordered a couple more side dishes...

The buffalo wings were just ok, so far and away from "the best I've ever had". The corn bread was not only dry, it lacks flavor, and slathering some butter on it didn't help one bit. The crispy macaroni and cheese was "interesting" but turning mac & cheese into balls and deep frying them definitely did not improve anything, it only made it worse. The mashed potatoes with cheddar topping was decent.

They shouldn't have even bothered with the free "amuse bouche" of crisps, watermelon chunks and peanuts. The crisps and peanuts weren't fresh, neither was the watermelon. We asked our server to take the plate away right after our first bite.

We ordered smoke BBQ pork ribs and lamb chops. They arrived looking beautiful and smokey, and we were completely disappointed once we poked our knives into the dishes. The BBQ pork ribs were so dry and tough, we girls had to ask our guy friend to try breaking it apart....are these BBQ ribs? or beef jerky? (Sorry, beef jerky would be tastier than these ribs)

When our server saw that I was struggling to cut my ribs, he stopped by and asked "how's your ribs" to which I replied "They're so dry and tough (rock hard), I can't even cut them".

His amazing reply? "Well, they're supposed to be dry"
I was speechless for a second and asked "Are they supposed to be inedible?"
Maybe I was being a little mean, but seriously, we couldn't eat most of the ribs.
We thought of sending the ribs back, but didn't bother in the end.

The lamb chops were a little better (only some pieces) and the rest were tough tough tough and dry dry dry too.

Our server still had the nerve to ask if we wanted dessert.
We didn't.

Won't go back to this place ever again unless there's a MAJOR improvement.

We all know there is a lot of restaurant turnover in HK and I don't see this place lasting. Also, the music is so loud you cannot talk to someone. The waiter had time to play with the juke box but not take my order. Booo - 3 thumbs down.

****************************************
APPERTISERS: CHIPS, CORNMEAL CRUSTED CATFISH, WATERMELON -
The fish is basically 九肚魚, which is eaten by a lot of countries especially India. It has become an endangered species nowadays! The corn crust was good but the morsel was overly fishy. Watermelon is paired with sea salt here.

SLOPPY JOE SANDWICH - 3.5
Filled with hand Pulled Pork, smoked Beef Brisket and Chicken, I ordered this thinking of all the delicious, gelationous slow roasted and smoked meats. It was enjoyable, but overall the package was just one dimensional sweetness. Where had all the hardcore flavours or smokiness gone to? The sour dill pickle wasn't sour enough. Small coleslaw included.

BAR-B-QUE USDA BABY PORK RIBS HALF A SLAB - 2.5
The signature BBQ dishes here are made in a Texan or Southern American Style (similar to Aussie Outback style too) - according to their menu, they use Hickory wood derived Coal to smoke, slow cook and roast the meat all at once for hours until fork tender. They're then browned-finished on a gas flame grill before serving. Pre-warmed BBQ sauce served in Mexican beer bottles came separately for pouring. This Blue Smoke BBQ sauce was good and fruity, slightly smoky. The ribs itself however didn't had a lot of grilled, caramelised nor smokiness trait, it had very little of the so called dry rub spices taste too - in fact the ribs were tender but too mushy in texture. It was also more bones than meat, with hardly much meatiness flavours left. If I was being more vociferous in its condemnation, I'd say I even expected these Texan style ribs to come attached with the other back side with edible cartilages intact, which is part of the reason to eat Ribs. But I guess baby ribs are different hey!

CRISPY MAC & CHEESE - 4.0
These turned out to be Macaroni filled into a croquette like crumbed ball. Its then baked further with 2 kinds of cheese. A very good and fun dish to eat, even though its outcome was very different to a normal Mac & Cheese. Loved it!

COLESLAW - 3.5
Ordered this separately from the included one above. For some reason I thought the veggies were sliced a little more thicker in this batch, and less salted. Both could have been more creamier to be more authentic in taste.

WINES -
2 wines by the glass were ordered. I ordered an Argentinian Malbec and a California Zinfandel, as I believed either one of these would have suited the food ordered. Due to the larger than expected sweetness hit in the food sauces and rubs, the more confectionery & oaky Zinfandel won convincingly tonight. However, if there was a lot more smokiness and savoury flavours in the food, I think the peppery spiced Malbec with its almost smoky flavour of its own, might have performed better as the profiles will compliment each other!

*****************************

- SERVICE IS GREAT HERE, PROFESSIONAL.

- BEWARE THAT UNLIKE OTHER DINING CONCEPTS RESTAURANTS, THIS NEW JOINT DOES NOT CARRY 'ASIA MILES' PARTICIPATION.

- ATMOSPHERE IS LIKE THOSE OUTBACK STEAK HOUSES AND PUBS, MAKING IT MORE FOR CASUAL GATHERINGS AND DINING. MY TYPE OF EATERY! CLIENTELLE HERE WERE MOSTLY NON-ASIANS.

- FOOD - WELL, THERE ARE BETTER RIBS OUT THERE FOR NOW. EG., BRIVO IN SOHO MADE ME SOME GREAT PORK RIBS (NOT BABY ONES) BEFORE, AND THOSE TASTED MORE RICHER, HAD BETTER MEAT TEXTURE, EVEN SEEMINGLY MORE SMOKY THAN THE ONES HERE DESPITE THE BRIVO VERSION NOT EVEN SMOKED BUT RELIED ON THE SAUCE! THIS PLACE COULD DO WITH A LOT MORE IMPROVEMENT...
