First visits can be such painful experiences. You read reviews about how good the place has been. You get recommendations from people about paying a visit. And then all of a sudden nobody talks about going there anymore after prolonged procrastination of the subject. While the establishment still secretly lurked from the back of your head, reminding you occasionally that you have YET to go there, you forgot, or ignored these little signs, and then, a long time passed before you realized that you
Diamond Cafe, located within the spiral networks of public housing in Choi Hung, has a long-standing history. You can see it from the green-and-white tiled floors, the chipping off wooden booths and the old-time sign at the entrance -- age has not brought upon the popularity of the Cafe. We sat down, ordered a Milk Tea ($11) and investigated deeply into the very details that make Diamond a worthy detour for locals. The Milk Tea, presented in old-style thick porcelain cups, is just perfect. The milk/tea proportion is right with no exaggerated taste of either ingredients. They compliment each other, as the tea improves the depth of flavours and the milk provides the smoothness.
We decided that Egg and Beef Sandwich is a must-eat -- Two slices of crustless white bread toasted (barely coloured), sandwiching a half runny scrambled eggs with scrumptious slices of beef. The juices slowly dripping into the bread. Now that's a good sandwich! Be careful not to let it sit, as the juices will make the bread soggy. Butter-and-Jam Toast is the same toast with a light smear of butter, then a generous spread of apricot jam. The jam is chockful with fruit and an extra dose of sugar for toast lovers. Both orders are wonderfully exected, despite they are such simple delights.
The Staff at Diamond Cafe have been there a long time. Their uniform still sharp and starch-white. Their services are ever so welcoming in a way that you can't say no to the generosity they show. Attitude is nowhere to be seen or heard here. You simply leave that outside of the cafe, come inside to relax and hope that against all odds, you'll be influence by the ever fabulous diamond and realize that simplicity trumps everything else.
