We had a lunch gathering (party of 7) at this restaurant, the menu was simple but good. Food quality was also excellent. However there was one particular waiter who had terrible attitude. No matter it’s taking the order, or we asked for help on dishes selection, or even we tried to ask for the check, he kept frowning to us and spoke to the whole table like we are not paying or owe him his life. There were three waiters there on the 2nd floor and this particular one is the one that appeared to be the most junior one, wore no tie or suit, tall, with messy hair. continue reading

On November 3rd 2018, I had the pleasure and privilege of dining at this remarkable institution.  Otherwise known in the seafood-loving community as Fishocking/Oysterrible/Seass, Fishteria truly is the seafood mecca of Hong Kong. The grilled sea-bass is an absolute must-try for people suffering from severe dehydration and are looking for immediate relief.  The generous lumps of salt will heighten not only your overall dining experience, but also your blood pressure.  The fish is accompanied by some HAND-PICKED, FARM-TO-TABLE asparagus, which as far as I know is the only vegetable in the world that stinks up your pee, guaranteeing that you’ll be leaving the restaurant feeling and smelling terrible!Pro-tip — go try it out with someone you like.  It’s the only thing that will stop your visit from being a total waste of time. continue reading

I’ve been to Fishsteria like 5x, but besides a somewhat forgettable brunch (AYCE pickled fish though yum) I’ve never tried any of their a la carte menu. We go for their amazing 10$ oyster happy hour (with one drink) that I cannot recommend enough, and then go somewhere else for dinner after. We do that because their menu is not cheap. Appetizers are around HKD 200 and main courses scale to HKD 600 and beyond. Last week however we failed for the 5th (!) time to try Francis (that place is ALWAYS packed… is the food that good?) and Fishsteria was right around the corner so we gave it a shot. I’m certainly glad we did. The dishes are familiar – burrata, ceviche, fried calamari, grilled octopus, but they add some interesting twists to each dish and the overall result is delicious. Here’s what we had:Tuna ceviche with crème and cherry tomatoes – not sour as expected and savory-rich with the crème and garnish. Much better than expected – and tuna ceviche I always expect to be deliciousBurrata with anchovies, cherry tomatoes and basil – if you like these ingredients, you’ll love this dish. I did wonder how burrata would work with anchovies, but it absolutely does. Decadent and delicious.Fried calamari – recommended by the restaurant with good reason – perfectly fried with a light batter layer, it’s just a bit of crunch before the calamari, which is cooked to springy-bitey perfection. Fantastic must-try dish – it’s massive though so make sure you have 2-3 people.Grilled octopus with padron peppers - served with a kind of hummus and paprika, the combination really works. That said, it’s hard to improve on grilled octopus, which is already perfect. Excellent but you can skip this for more interesting stuff.Uni pasta – my friend loved it, but I found it a little blah – for the price (300+) I didn’t think it was worth it. Uni stuff needs the ocean-flavor of the urchin came across more strongly.I’m tempted to call Fishsteria fine dining for the prices they charge, but their menus is somewhat more casual, which puts it in a strange place. That said, it's expensive but the pricing is just about right – the portions are generous and the execution is excellent They’ve been around forever so it’s clearly working, but not sure under what circumstances I’d come again. I do think it’s worth a try though, if you have an occasion to celebrate or just want a great date night (and definitely go for the oyster happy hour!) continue reading
