所以另一次,我選了另一個看得明白的主菜 Costoletta di maiaie alla griglia, pomodori infornatie salsa al marsala, 英文是Grilled Pork Chop 即是烤豬扒。份量ok,味道中上。
餐後飲品或甜品,要另加$28,高級餐廳嘛。

It's located in too old and dirty building and a random guy forced us to join a membership at G/F and didn't allow us to enter into the building without a membership registration.Restaurant is too dark and they use very dirty dishes / glasses.One HK local guy was coughing without covering his nose/mouth several times but this restaurant staffs did nothing to discourage it (please, Covid-19 is not over in HK). A huge disappointment, we will NEVER visit this horrible restaurant again.

FYI the salad bar isn’t just salad. They have all sorts of things such as cheese, cured meats, cooked meats, desserts, vegetables... a very long list of things. Personally, I really enjoyed the potato salad and the flan.

As for my main course, I got the veal. Actually I somewhat regret this choice because the veal is fried, and I think it somewhat conceals the flavor of the dish somewhat. Still, it wasn’t bad and I was happy with it. Other main course options include fish, or pasta.

Overall I think the salad bar is a decent deal, but I’m not sure if it’s more expensive for Mother’s Day. Only come here if you’re hungry though.

食咗甜品就上main 喇喎,叫咗好幾個一齊share, 最好食就係個cutterfish 就係第一張圖嘅墨魚,個樣有啲似酸菜魚咁,有啲黃黃底色嘅sauce, 老實講我都係第一次咁樣食原隻嘅墨魚,估唔到可以咁入味同埋咁滑,而且口感好爽,好彈牙,真係好好食。

I made a reservation for dinner with a group of friends at this restaurant via Restaurant Week Winners Edition almost 3 weeks in advance. Then 5 days before the scheduled dinner, the restaurant whatsapped me:

“This is Gia Trattoria restaurant in Wan Chai. We are truly sorry to inform you that due to a private event we cannot fulfill your reservation on April 4th. We are very sorry about this inconvenience that was not expected. Would you like to switch your reservation in Gia Trattoria to another day under the same promotion?
Alternatively we will be happy to reserve a table on April 4th in Giando in Star Street, unfortunately not under the restaurant week deal.
Please let us know your preference and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Thank you very much for your understanding!”

This restaurant obviously doesn't think it's important to provide the service promised.

It doesn't matter how many times the restaurant said sorry in the message, or how it claimed it was “unexpected”. It is a fact that they offered services, accepted reservations from the general public, and then DECIDED to cancel all reservations to accommodate a private event instead. How could a deliberate decision be unexpected?

The options it offered doesn't show any real effort to make up the deal they failed to fulfill under Restaurant Week. They expected customers to reschedule a group dinner (which is not feasible with everyone's busy schedule) or to go to another restaurant without offering any special arrangement.

The restaurant was not interested in really
make up the “inconvenience caused”, they only asked you to accept it by offering something at their own convenience.

I suppose this restaurant participated in Restaurant Week to get more ppl to try its service, and return again. Unfortunately, they only showed that they have no respect to customers and no desire to fulfill promised service. It also damaged the reputation of Restaurant Week, by making customers feel disposable.

VERY disappointing.

Whoever consider going to this restaurant should be prepared to have your reservation canceled by the restaurant without regrets. Good luck.

PS. We will go to another restaurant, one not participating in Restaurant Week.

Disclaimer: I have been to Gia before and had good experiences with its food and service. But this can only become a memory that cannot be revisited.

Another surprise is the Italian grocery store they run downstairs. Fresh produce, cold cuts and cheeses at 2/3 of Citysuper prices. 10% off for patrons of the restaurant. Wish I knew earlier as I bought a ton of groceries before dinner.

We arrived before our friends did, so we first checked out the market and were blown away. The quality and selection of Italian specialties is superb. We saw some jarred stuffed peppers, pickles, garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes, among many other things, but we weren't sure which to get and decided to return after brunch, when we were less hungry and could make better decisions. After our meal we did return and bought many delicious ingredients.

But first, our friends arrived and we entered the restaurant.

The atmosphere was very welcoming and homey. some might call it cozy, but my HK understanding of cozy is just a polite way of saying cramped, which this place was not. The tables were not too close together at all and varied in size. There was also a nice view of the harbor, though of course there was also some construction work to look over. It is truly a very nice place to enjoy a meal.

The first thing we had was the appetizer buffet. This is an absolute must and was the highlight of our meal, unquestionably. The spread was superb, containing all manner of assorted Italian delicacies of salads, pickles, meats, and cheeses. What I found pleasantly surprising though was how much the salads, pickles, and cheeses eclipsed the meats. I love Italian cured pork and ham well enough of course, but I am not often impressed by it, unless it is the centerpiece of the appetizer dish. It clearly wasn't though, as you can tell from both of my plates (yes, I got seconds, and so should you). I will briefly describe each plate below:

Normally the bread served at a restaurant is unremarkable, and we thought the same here. But I must say the focaccia was lighter and fluffier than any I've had before, and comes highly recommended.

At the top is some Caesar salad, arugula, and beet salad. The beet salad won. Never in Asia have I tasted such beautiful, candy-like beets with a wonderful sweetness. I am not sure if the market nextdoor sells them but I think they might, and if so they would definitely be worth getting and adding to a salad of your own.

The tomatoes were unreal---fresh from Italy of course and without any equal. On the left are some very big green olives, which were incredible. I was worried they would be too dry, as has been the case with big olives I have eaten in the past, but they weren't at all. the roasted pepper salad, salami, bread, and pancetta were all lovely of course, but the true star of the plate was the soupy cheese on the bottom. I don't know the name but it is incredible. I highly recommend accompanying it with one of the garlic cloves in olive oil.

The sun-dried tomatoes on top were something special because they were not too dried. I generally don't like sun-dried tomatoes but these had a mellow enough flavor that I was very happy. The soft cheese with truffle was a nice treat as well. What really shone for me on this plate though was the melon and the anchovies. The melon was unbelievable---ripe and sweet but not too soft. The anchovies were something special as they were soaked in vinegar and reminded me very much of herring or whitefish in vinegar that I have had elsewhere in Europe, but the anchovy's mellow flavor shone through beautifully. So much for the appetizers.

I hate to say it but I don't think the mains had any chance of successfully following up the first act. They were all excellent, but they lacked the "wow factor" enjoyed by the appetizer buffet.

I got the fried veal. I never allow myself veal but thought it might be okay to make an exception here. It wasn't, and I feel bad. I found it to be quite dry, but I have no idea how any moisture could otherwise have been preserved in such a thinly-pounded, deep fried cutlet. The crust was exquisite, but I only worry that it made light of the veal it was supposed to complement. The potatoes and bed of arugula however were wise complements. I don't think I would recommend this one.

The lamb chops on the other hand might have been the best I've had in HK. they were wonderfully rare, as I like them, and exquisitely tender with a nice char. Personally, I would have liked to see a pan sauce, but maybe that's just me. The balsamic an olive oil drizzle felt like a tease. Again though, we couldn't stop talking about the appetizers throughout our whole experience with the mains.

Our friends ordered the macaroni allamatriciana and the seafood soup. Both looked fine and I think next time I will try one of those, as I do love both dishes at home and would like to try them in a proper Italian restaurant setting.

I don't have a sweet tooth but the desert buffet was wonderful. What stood out most to me was the chocolate mousse, tiramisu, and the small cannoli. Each comes highly recommended.

I am a regular guest at Gia and love the little terrace below the big tree in the back of the restaurant. It's cozy and great to bring family, friends or a date.The service is very attentive and friendly.My favourite dishes are the Veal Ossobuco which is braised in red wine (very tender) and the Veal Milanese, the Italian Wiener Schnitzel.For the pizza, I would go to other places. For the pizza, I would go to other places.

They have recently changed the wine list and that was definitely not an improvement. I would suggest to order a bottle of Prosecco rather than the over-priced red wines.

Lovely trattoria with very quiet and peaceful environment. Went here for brunch with friends and their children. Their brunch is a very good choice to try all different dishes, the service is good and few carpark slots are available as first come first served basis. Will come again!
