We wanted something different than the usual Christmas day brunch, so opted for a more "exotic" brunch at Hotal Colombo, a Sri Lankan restaurant (rare in Hong Kong). They offered a set brunch menu, with a chickpea starter, a main course (each),  alot of condiments. We chose the masala dosa and the vegetable kothu, a flavorful stir fried vegetable dish with wide noodles. The condiments, starters, and main courses all mix and match well to deliver a very flavorful meal with interesting varieties.

All appetisers except the fish was vegetarian even though in "authentic" way they would have some meat in it. The chef has altered ghe ingredients to make it fits for all.

And at the same time I am chowing down the deep fried fish. It was cripsy on the outside, hot and moist in the inside. The fish tastes good, but the bone situation was ridiculous.

I can't think of a worse way to repulse my vegetarian friend as I slowly spit out the bones. The dessert was a delight. At 330 I think I would expect a more filling appetisers as the main course is not too big. The dessert did save the day though!

Getting a table here is not easy but we managed with 6 of us at about 9pm. They don't take reservations. We ordered a bottle of the New Zealand Pinot Noir and the price was about HKD450. It was pretty good. The food is spicy. The place is in Soho so a little bit tight but that's normal for the area.Overall great experience, the service was also on point. Cheers.

The Dosa was OK but not among the best I had in the past. I’m not sure but I had the feeling that the Dosa was reheated.
The Chicken Curry was very nice, spicy but still had a lot of flavors.
I will definitely come back I need to try the Dosa’s

I must say it’s not something everyone would love, but staffs were attentive and definitely a great dinner with good vibes and interesting flavors and concepts! We found it too spicy for us for some of the dishes but it definitely worth trying and quite delicious 😋 bone marrow is one of their signature dish. our favorite was this curry and chicken with veggie. egg plant (cold dish) was also great 👍 overall quite satisfying and perfect service from the team. .

So we started off with the “Short Eats” section- short eats are basically small snack dishes in SriLanka. We ordered the Bone Marrow and Beef Chilli Dry.
The Bone marrow varuval with pol roti is surely going to take you back to your childhood memories!! It is definitely a winning dish!
Next, we ordered Hoppers! We chose the chili cheese hopper. Its like a crisp, bowl shaped pancake and was pretty good!
From the Kari (curry) section we opted for the Fish Kari and it was AMAZING! It was laced in a coconut milk sauce and delivered the right flavors with a good kick! Totally loved it!
Also ordered the pol sambol -and if you love your spices like I do, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this coconut sauce made with chili, salt and sugar - it was a delicious dipping companion!
However to our surprise (read
isappointment) there are no desserts on the menu! And that was quite a downer. Based on our disappointed and sad faces, we were offered a complimentary cocktail but a nice dessert to finish off the otherwise perfect meal would have been a sweet ending!
Overall, loved the food, amazing staff and service (like in all blacksheep restaurants), a wait of 20mins to get a table. I’m definitely going back again!!

It took about 30 minutes of wait as there was a big group inside the restaurant. We wished to take the seats at the bar table where we could see the chef cook, however, we might need to wait for even longer for those seats, so we took the table for two near the entrance.

We were both newbie to Sri Lanka cuisine, as we haven’t visit the country nor try anything Sri Lankan yet, we were definitely stunned reading the menu, as we had no idea what “Kothu” and “Hoppers” mean, I only know about Dosa and Kari. But our worries were swiped clean by friendly staff, who explained the menu to us and gave us some of her favourite dishes as recommendations. We took her advice in getting one short eat, one kothu, one dosa, and one kari with a hopper side, which made a perfect portion for dinner.

Highlight of the meal is definitely this Bone Marrow Varuval with Pol Roti, which was strongly recommended by the waitress as her favourite dish. I am not a person that would normal opt for bone marrow nor internal organs of animals, but trust me, you got to try this, it was so so delicious that we were speechless! The meat on the bone was like slow cooked meat, very tender and flavoured, yet still very juicy. Best part was the white “marrow” stuff, which was like the fat of A5 wagyu beef, so rich with fatty aroma (if you know what I mean, I could hardly describe how delicious it is
)! Dip it with the roti, or eat it on its own. Both ways are awesome. Just that you have to eat it hot, when it cools down, the white fatty thing will solidify again and is less enjoyable then its liquid form.

Lamb Kari with Hopper was another delight. Hooper is new to us, it is somewhat like Chinese white sugar cake in the middle, and is made into an inverted hat shape. It had a nice and rich sugary rich cake flavour, which wasn’t even masked when I dipped it in the curry!

The curry itself was fantastic too! The lamb was thoroughly cooked, it was meaty yet very tender. So so enjoyable indeed! We were too busy savoring the dish and hardly talked!

A complimentary drink was provided to help digestion after we settled the bill. We were so satisfied with this dining experience, friendly and helpful staff, vibrant dining environmental, delicious dishes with all the spices and coconut products. Best of all, the dishes are of really affordable price! How could we not love Hotal Colombo?

I sincerely wish that one day when I visit Sri Lanka, the local cuisine wouldn’t disappoint me after having such a fantastic meal at Hotal Colombo!
