I got the chicken cordon bleu: "juicy chicken breast, French ham & melting Morbier raw cow milk cheese in light crispy breaded crust." This is kind of like a ham and cheese sandwich where the bread has been replaced by chicken and the whole thing is deep-fried. As described, the breading is actually light and crispy, it's just the right amount of cheesy, and the ham is complementary, rather than being overwhelmingly hammy. I was completely pleased and satisfied with this.

You can choose one or two sides with the mains. I think the deal is that if you pick two, you get two half portions-- I definitely recommend two, since the portions are big enough as-is. I got the coquillettes, "buttered French macaroni" and the mesclun salad. I don't see how the macaroni was French, in particular, but it was nicely al dente and lightly buttered. In retrospect, I think I should have put some salt and pepper on it. The salad was also basic, but that's a good thing.

My wife got the fish foil: "barramundi fish fillet on top of leeks fondue & capers, cooked in tightly sealed tin foil." Leeks fondue is leeks sauteed in butter and vinegar (or lemon juice). The fish was tender and very flavorful and juicy. It was another hit.

For sides my wife got the ratatouille, "Provence traditional stewed tomato, zucchini, eggplant, bell peppers, onion with mixed herbs & bay leaves," and the potato noisettes, "golden crispy crusted potato balls with creamy mash filling inside." She reports that the ratatouille was good (I didn't try it, I was having a fried chicken ham sandwich and butter noodles for dinner, I didn't want to ruin that with vegetables). The potato balls were a little bland and needed a sauce or a dip or something. Apparently one of the appetizers is a wheel of melted camembert with these potato balls to dip in-- that I think would be good.

I liked La Cantoche. The food was very good, especially the mains, and reasonably priced. I thought the sides were a little basic and I was kinda hoping for, for example, the buttery French mashed potatoes that they have at Mr. Chatte, but basic is fine when the star of the show is so good. I would definitely come back here.
Other Info. : I caught quite a bit of Pokemon while dining in this establishment.

配了什麼在面,那就是一客 French Pork Terrine (Terrine Champétière),也叫做 Pâté,是法國人專門用來配麵包的豬肉醬,這一種帶咸香的肉醬,是當年在英國的百貨公司中的食品部常見之物。

這一個 Terrine,應該是店方自家製的,入口的味道沒有太過咸同濃烈,而且豬肉的香味很重。肉醬有少少粗,亦因為咁而令人覺得特別香口,配合了麵包,是更加之可口,重口味的你我,單吃的味道更濃香。

主食之一,是 Sole Fish filet with virgin sauce and pilaf rice (Filet de sole sauce vierge, riz pilaf),是法式香煎魚塊配抓飯。Pilaf Rice,我習慣串為 Pulao Rice,是印巴中東一帶的煮飯方法之一,也可以說,是他們的炒飯,加入了香料去炒,很是香口的,而魚是龍脷魚柳,原片香煎,再在上面加上香料,感覺輕盛亦惹味。

另一個是 Homemade chicken meatballs in cream sauce with homemade mashed potatoes (Boulettes de poulet maison sauce crème, purèe maison),在菜式名字當中已經說明了是自家製的食品,而自家製的,就是碟中被厚厚一層 cream 蓋住的雞肉丸。這一個雞肉丸,是用碎雞肉來做,加上了蘿蔔同薯仔蓉得一起搓成,入口香甜,有雞味但又不會很肉,薯蓉有少少 creamy 口感,而且入口香滑帶甜,是一個很美妙的料理,沒有牙嗎? 這 chicken meat ball 一定啱你食。

Dessert 是一個 Chocolate cake (Gâteau au chocolat),朱古力味濃郁,甜味也很好,入口,你會覺得的東西的朱古力度數很高,很純的 chocolate cake,不錯的,而且質地比較結實煙韌,感覺幾 full 下。

很可愛,很 casual 的一個法式午餐,同男仔來,可以玩玩足球飲飲酒,同女仔來,可以輕鬆地享用法國式的家庭美食。說法式浪漫,這兒就不明顯了,但在這兒感受下法國人的真正飲食同悠閒生活,倒是好好的。

Despite its slightly offbeat location, La Cantoche is popular on Friday and Saturday nights so you'll have to book at least two days in advance. 

The entrance is easy to miss and the address coincides with another shop located on Hollywood Road. You have to go through the narrow alley, pass another restaurant before you see La Cantoche. 

I came here the first time around December and kept coming back whenever I could. I like this place because it offers several unique and tasty dishes at reasonable prices (less than $200). The setting is casual and unpretentious, but also slightly uneasy as the eye-popping graffiti and the brick walls somehow remind me of Kassovitz's blistering La Haine. I could easily imagine this as the regular hangout of suburban French teens. 

At least one or two of the attending staff are French natives and as there are always enough French expats passionately engaging in their debate while enjoying their frites and red wine, La Cantoche has a genuine French vibe to it. 

One of their dishes with the widest appeal is no doubt the camembert chaud with deep-fried potato balls where you can devour your own wheel of cheese. An irresistibly sinful dish which throws that resolve out the window. The camembert is tangy and gooey, and goes well with the crispy balls of potatoes. This makes a great starter to go with red wine.

Then there is the chicken cordon bleu--a simple, breaded chicken in deep-fry with cheese wrapped in the meat. You can pick any two sides to go with it. The crispy chicken is tasty and tender, but the amount of cheese wrapped inside is rather limited. It helps make the dish less heavy though. The hollandaise sauce is always creamy and satisfying.

One of my favorite starters is their rice krispies with lettuce wrap. The rice krispies are mixed with some fried, savory bits of meat (or so I believe). You can spoon the crisps into a large piece of lettuce and wrap it. Very crunchy and light; a great dish to share. 

Their lemon tart (which was the 'dessert of the day' for a long time in the first half of the year) is amazing, even for someone who is not a big fan of lemon tarts. It's rather flat and big. The shortbread crust is buttery and solid, and the citron filling is refreshing and not too sweet. If it's available, don't pass it up.

Service is okay. This is a fun place to try different dishes with a group of friends or with family, or to satisfy a craving for cheese or decent Western food with a reasonable price tag. Slightly too casual for romantic dates and important events, but it definitely lives up to its name, The Canteen

The lemon tart and the chocolate tart were both good. Both were just the right amount of its defining element. The chocolate was not too sweet, and had the texture of a chewy brownie. The lemon tart was creamy and zesty. (7.5/10)

Chocolate pudding was the star of this spread. There was a bit of ice deliberately mixed into the pudding, which contrasted with the pudding. A bit of coffee powder highlighted the perfect sweetness of the pudding. Bravo! (Is that French)

Nice to try some French-style desserts that I haven't already tried many times. (The next time someone obsess over macaroons I will crush them in your face)

The service was also appreciated. They were to close at 2:30pm, but let us stay till 3:00pm without rushing us. (8/10)

一開始對薯波有點猶疑,怕太油膩。甫上菜,就被可愛的賣相俘虜了我的心。竟是一個完整的卡門貝爾芝士!把半融的芝士塗上趣緻的小薯波,兩種味道都偏淡,幾夾,有時配太濃的芝士反蓋過了薯仔的味道。薯球炸得外脆內軟,而且一點都不油膩。到最後一口一口吃光放涼變硬了的芝士,心滿意足。

M&M's nougat ice cream
最後男友堅持點甜品。甚麼時候開始變得嗜甜了?腦海中幻想一球雪糕,上面放了數顆M&M和nougat,沒抱太大期望。結果又是另一個驚喜。原來雪糕裡藏了M&M和鳥結糖碎,雪糕在口中融掉的同時,咬到M&M外層的脆和鳥結糖的煙韌,甜味中帶杏仁味,出色。

正餐過後,來到甜品時間,以幾款批或撻來作結,我對其中一款名為M&M’s Nougat Icecream極其讚賞。有些細碎的朱古力豆增加了質感,與香甜煙靱的紐結相配襯,而且又沒有雪糕那樣的凍得令牙齒也打震的感覺,無疑令客人不自覺地愛上。到最後,原來老闆更會在閒時以Fraise Tagada士多啤梨糖來釀製定Vodka Tagada,十分香甜,酒味反而很隨和,很易入口。

I really liked this dish because the duck was so much nicer than the usual minced beef.
I was surprised the French have shepherds pie as well but at this other French restaurant I dined at, they also had it too.

Again I was surprised with Bread pudding because it was quite British but the taste was slightly different from the usual bread puddings because it had dessicated coconut and almond on top with delicious pieces of young coconut in it too giving it a lovely chewy texture and a nutty taste contrasted by the Brandy.

新菜單中最讓人雀躍的一道,這個原型 Camembert 加熱后裡面的芝士開始融化且“破繭而出”,外層白色的發酵外皮因加熱的關係更失一分水分,更富一分煙韌,與裡面粘稠無比的芝士“蓉”形成強烈對比,稍稍放涼,芝士便開始凝結變硬,喜好近似於香口珠口感的朋友建議多等一至兩分鐘,稍涼的芝士的那份嚼勁實在讓人齒間“歡樂”不已。除了芝士配菜的 (pommes noisette) Deep Fried Potato 也是 Cantoche 的名物,可愛的金黃色小球大小剛剛好,超薄的“黃金外衣”內是香甜軟滑的土豆蓉,一粒一粒讓人吃不停,絕對是澱粉愛好者(尤其是喜好土豆的朋友)不能錯過的佳品!配酒類也是一流~

新菜單保留了Cantoche 的幾個經典“曲目”,這一道藍帶雞扒便是其中之一。有點似流心芝士雞扒,雞皮抹上些炸粉炸至金黃色,相當脆口,且油分也處理的較為細心,吃起來不覺油瀝瀝;中間夾著的切成小方塊的火腿片,夾層中則是已經開始融化的芝士,這道菜既有炸物的脆口與香氣,雞肉的滑嫩,火腿略咸的獨特風味,再加上流心芝士的濃濃奶香,口感太豐富了。

粗粗短短的“手指”腸周身油亮亮的,表面稍稍披著層微焦的腸衣,吃在嘴裡是油滋滋的滿足,口感比想像中的鬆軟。

Poisson en Papillote (Barramundi fish filet cooked in foil with leeks & capers)
燙手錫紙里包的是一大塊雪雪白滑嫩嫩的魚塊,還是肚尖那裡連著部份膠質魚邊,不少水氣焗住魚塊有些近似蠻熟的效果,油分被全部逼出,魚肉本身較為粗質,啖啖肉的,錫紙所留住的熱氣使得口感變得稍微“軟化”些,啖啖肉之中又多了份多汁與滑嫩,調味方面一桌兩份相差不小,好好彩,自己這一邊的入味非常咸香適中,另一邊則顯得淡味了小小。

同時 serving 的也有大分量的蔬菜,青豆、紅蘿蔔、土豆蓉,均是略帶creamy 口感的溫熱版本,奶香十足。

又是一道fusion 菜式,滑嫩雞肉香烤之後略微收縮了水份,肉質變得緊實,但仍保持多汁香滑的特質,烹調方面充滿異域風情,香辣惹味。

臨近尾聲便要貪多幾杯粉粉嫩的 Rose,甜甜的口感入喉圓潤而略帶果香。甜品環節依然秉承略帶樸質的home-made 風味,看得到實實在在的原料,分量比起精貴的法式甜品也要多小小。大多是傳統口味,朱古力、曲奇、M&M、檸檬撻等等,每一款都是極其穩整又為人熟悉的口味,蛋糕造的口感細膩濕軟,不過甜又足夠讓人滿足。

華里 ... 真是一條很難去找出來的小街道!  La Cantoche 的確是藏身在那兒 ( La Cantoche 是法文字, 英文解作 "canteen" 而中文解作「食堂」)。  依地址來讀 (香港上環荷李活道 227 號華里5號),  La Cantoche 應該是在荷李活道之內, 可是我與丈夫從水坑口走上荷李活道, 再沿路由細號碼行至大號碼, 明明行至東華醫院附近的7-Eleven都只是222號, 再行前少少聖公會聖馬太堂竟然是232號, 那麼227號在哪???  難道是在對面街, 通常街號是一邊單數一邊雙數嘛 .... 問題是 ... 對面街正正是一個偌大的荷李活道公園, 究竟 La Cantoche 藏身在那兒??  問 路都問過多次, 沒有路人知道有這條華里, 既然留在這條街上徘徊都不是辦法, 一來時間上不許可, 我們決定「反其道而行」----- 原來荷李活道是一條很奇怪的街道, 雙數那邊是細號碼的話, 對面單數竟然是大號碼, 最終發現華里是在荷李活道 227 號的橫巷內, 你們知不知道227 號(單數行)的對面(雙數行)是多少號??  是188號!!!   ╮(╯_

La Cantoche 是走複式空間路線, 四圍充滿玩樂及時尚設計,有別於一般高級法國餐廳, 氣氛輕鬆, 毫不拘謹;下層屬酒吧區, 樓底不高, 加上暗暗沉沉的燈光, 應該會產生一點壓逼感, 幸而座位不多, 客人可以遊走逛逛, 有流量就有生氣。
