Good concept, interior and food, but definitely overpriced for its portion, which reminds me of "food tasting". So far, everything that I've tried were delicious, though I have to point out the hygiene of the utensils. Not sure how long it's been placed outside, but you can clearly see the dust on the spoon and sauce dish. I'd like to enjoy my food without having to worry about my tummy.Nevertheless, nothing beats the Nutella Balls, it's my all time favorite and a must try.

Tom Yum Xiao Long Bao

HK Egg Lemon Tart

I absolutely LOVE this dish. The dumpling skin is thin and moist and the shredded duck inside is juicy and tender. I have never had duck dumplings in Chinese restaurants but this worked and I am so glad I tried it! Expectations are now high for the following dishes....

Next up was the Ratatouille dumpling with an Italian twist to it.It was filled with tomatoes and vegetables. I really like the flavors of this one but the skin unfortunately was a bit dry and too thick when it was served.

The menu said "Fried Risotto" so I was excited to see how this one worked out. The flavors are good but the texture resembles a bad Chinese fried rice that is too moist. You are supposed to use "next day" rice that is dry to make good fried rice. I think it would be more interesting to make a creamy risotto but with the Chinese ingredients.

Lastly we had this meatball noodle. I was expecting regular ho fan but to my suprise, they used rice rolls to replace the noodle. An interesting take and I like it! It would've been even better if they fried the rice roll and make it crispy!

All in all, there are some hits and misses. Would come back and try the other dim sum dishes. The people are extremely nice in this place too. Definitely come for a chill night!

When we were looking around Hong Kong for a place to live, Sheung Wan was on a relatively short list of areas that I wanted to live. When we were looking around Hong Kong for a place to live, Sheung Wan was on a relatively short list of areas that I wanted to live. We had a pretty demanding list of requirements, and as new residents to Hong Kong, didn't really have the right requirements on the list. As it turned out, we didn't move into the area, which in hindsight is a shame... I really love the vibrancy and energy in Sheung Wan, oh, of course I love all of the the little laneways that are full of funky little cafes and restaurants.

It's not as if we live a long distance from Sheung Wan, in fact, we live just up the mountain in the Mid Levels, so it only takes us ten minutes to walk down the hill (up the hill is another matter). We spend a lot of time wandering around the area, just soaking up the vibe and last weekend, we checked out the Portobello Markets (unfortunately not the same as the Notting Hill version). Apart from meeting some really cool peeps (that we will be hanging out with for dinner soon), we found a little dumpling cafe that looked the goods.

ManMo Cafe bills itself as a 'contemporary dim sum with brilliant flavour in Sheung Wan' and serves up a contemporary mix of fusion and eclectic vegetarian friendly Chinese. Normally, with a title like that, I'd run for the hills, but given we were pretty hungry and the cafe really did look inviting, we went in to check it out.

ManMo is an interesting name, and is labeled after a famous neighbouring temple and was conceived by Swiss-born Nicolas Elalouf to serve a burgeoning crowd of East meets West foodie. Throwing everything into the menu, Nicholas has scoured the dining scene looking for input from chefs with pedigrees that includes Robuchon and Din Tai Fung. As a result, ManMo boasts a menu that is contemporary and quite different from any other dim sum place around.

Sitting down at our table perusing the menu, we couldn't help notice the clean lines and hipster vibe which flowed through to the contemporary art for sale along the walls. Yes, there were a couple of pieces that we had our eye on! Focussing back on the menu, we noticed some quite novel options available, but also noticed that the price was a little on the high side... In fact, for dumplings, the prices were pretty exorbitant. Not deterred, we figured that the clear use of high quality ingredients would justify the price. We ordered and waited.

First up were our drinks, a fresh orange juice for myself and cocktail that was reminiscent of a mimosa (in fact, it might have been a mimosa). We were off to a good start, with the juice freshly squeezed and the champagne and juice cocktail hitting the spot after wandering around on a steamy HK afternoon.

I'd had my suspicions that ManMo was 'too cool for school' and once our first set of dumplings were delivered in a square steamer, my suspicious were confirmed. The shape of the steamer and the colour of our duck dumplings (a shocking black) further concluded my thought that we were indeed in a hipster joint. Our duck dumplings were not too bad, with a rich duck flavour coming from the shredded (and likely confit) duck, my only gripe was that they were a little dry and a bowl of dipping vinegar / soy sauce would have been appreciated.

While I love steamed dumplings, I'm also partial to deep fried wanton, so we'd ordered the crispy shrimp wanton. Rustically presented with chopped lettuce and carrot (which did look a little out of place), the wanton were actually half the size that I was expecting, each being bite sized. Tasty, with the shrimp flavour coming through, again I found the dish to be a little dry but this one was served with a side of sauce.

Interestingly, while not given sauce for the dumplings, we'd been presented with some salt and pepper!

Next up was the king spring roll, which was cooked in a style that I'd never seen. Usually neatly cropped at the ends, the ManMo spring rolls were just the sheets wrapped and deep fried, which looked cool. We usually like soy sauce to dip our spring rolls, but the aioli that was provided worked surprisingly well with the crispy coating and the expertly cooked prawns that were ensconced within. A+ for this one.

You'll normally not see me ordering much from vegetarian menus, but I must have been caught up in the hipster vibe of ManMo when I ordered the mozzarella and tomato dumplings from the vegetarian segment of the menu. What really attracted me was the prospect of a dumpling filled with melted mozzarella, which surely would have been spectacular?! With a skin made with pesto and almost translucent, the combination of cheese and tomato was pretty nice, my only problem was that the mozzarella wasn't properly melted, so it felt a little pasty on the palate and again, no dipping sauce.

I was terribly excited by the prospect of our last two dumpling sets. We'd ordered the foie gras xiaolongbao, along with the scallop xiaolongbao. I've had some of the most amazing 'soup dumplings' since landing in Hong Kong was was hoping for more. The scallop version was up first, and I wasn't super impressed by the look of them. The dumpling covering looked quite thick, and I couldn't see that pool of sweet broth that normally sits at the bottom of xiaolongbao. Undeterred, I went for my dumpling, bit the corner to suck out the soup....... Only to find that there was none! It looked as if the broth had leaked out.

The foie gras xiaolongbao were next and it was really clear that the broth had also leaked out, that funky square steaming basket was the lucky recipient of the broth. I have to say that xiaolongbao without the broth is a big let down and while the foie gras and scallop filling were both pretty nice, they were dry and lacking as a consequence.

We'd been a little disappointed with the last couple of dumplings, so decided to pass on dessert. I'd also been a little stung by the price of the dumplings as well, so didn't really want to dig any deeper for a sweet end to the meal. I guess, if we'd been blown away by our meal, we probably would have considered dessert (despite the price).

Service on the other hand was first rate, we never had to wait long between courses and our waiter came across a number of times to check that everything was ok (as did the Manager at one point). The service, those amazing king spring rolls, combined with a funky environment in a cool part of Hong Kong meant that the meal was a pass overall (just). We reflected on the meal as we were walking away and felt that the price was probably the main issue. If we'd spent a third of our (over) $600 on the meal, it might not have hurt so much and we'd have been happier.

Look, we love funky places and think that there is a place for ManMo in the dumping market, it's just that you can't price yourself out of the market. If you head to Tim Ho Wan, you could get the same meal (maybe not as colourful) for waaaaay less, and Tin Dai Fung wouldn't be much more expensive. Maybe it's worth adding extra dumplings for the $$ or reducing the price.

Unfortunatly you can not choose and mix dim sun, it has to be couples.
Try the burger bun, you wont be hungry after! the other ones might be too light if you are a big eater.
However, for lunch it is light (so good if you have meetings after, so you dont fall asleep) tasty and it comes with their famous desserts: Nutella ball or Bun Tatin.

The Bun tatin is my favorite ever ! I could eat many! I love the dash of coconut they put in the cream.

The set lunch comes with a soft drink or coffee. However it doesnt come with tea, which it is a bit strange for a fusion Asian restaurant... you need to pay extra, so this is not fair.

Ambiance is quite and relaxing, for friends catch up is nice!

For sure, I need to come back for dinner and try more dim sum!

It worths a try!

Next comes Foie Gras Xiao Long Bao - HKD130/3pcs, and bewarned, it's jus bursting! The jus was actually foie gras oil excreted from the foie gras during steaming, so it wasn't as pleasant to drink as typical Xiao Long Bao where the jus is soup. I suggest taking the whole piece in one go. The skin was at acceptable thickness, and the filling was bold in flavour. The xiao long bao was delightful to enjoy.

The Truffle Brie - HKD85/3pcs is one of my favourite at Man Mo Cafe. Every bite of this was filled with wonderful truffle and Brie flavours. Both of the flavour was rather mild though, so salt and pepper were definitely needed for this dumpling! The dumpling skin was kept thin and it was pan fried to give a crisp and smokey bottom.

The Kung Fu Creme Brulee - HKD26 was my favourite dessert here at Man Mo Cafe. The extremely crunchy caramelised top was lovely. The King Fu custard was smooth and carried a strong tea flavour which was absolutely addicting. I couldn't stopped myself eating spoons after spoons!

Kashmir Tchai $50

Truffle Brie Dumplings ($85) for 3 pieces. The prices are more on the steeper side for dumplings... I thought these were quite good. There was some oil, juice, and I'm really QUITE fond of cheese, so I loved the chewy brie, however I don't think I tasted much of the truffle and I didn't particularly like the thickness of the wrap.

Foie Gras Xiao Long Bao ($130)....Okay, I LOVEEE XLB....They make me happy. A light piece of juicy (hopefully meat) filling enveloped in a thin piece of rice wrapping..Whats NOT to like? Except this...was just Ok? I was sad to say I didn't like this as much either. Sigh. The foie gras and pork filling was pretty good- but a bit too oily.

I like it spicy.

10. Bun Tatin 8/10 (上圖: 左上)

The restaurant looked like a stylish art gallery with its bright white walls and various paintings on the walls. Even the the cups and plates were quite dapper with its traditional Chinese patterns.
MAN MO Cafe serves fusion dim sum all day long as well as several choices of soup, rice and noodles. For the dim sum, you can choose between 2 and 3 pieces, but the prices for the dim sum were not cheap ranging from $48 - $88 for 2 pieces and $70 - $130 for 3 pieces. Between the 2 of us, we ordered several dishes of dim sum and desserts to try.

Scallop Xiao Lung Bao ($88) - the dim sum was noticeably different from the start as it came in a square steam basket instead of a traditional round basket. The fillings inside were chopped scallops and bamboo shoots and while the flavors were alright, it was quite dry without any juices or broth which is the quintessence of a good xiao lung bao. Because of that, the fillings seemed better suited in a har gow actually. Also, the skin of the xiao lung bao was too thick and there was a weird smell on it as well. [3/5]

Foie Gras Xiao Lung Bao ($88) - the foie gras xiao lung bao fared a bit better than the scallops as there was at least some juices along with the filling - though it was quite oily. The fillings were rich and flavorful but the skin of the XLB suffered from the same fate as the other one. [3.5/5]

Burgerbun ($68) - the buns arrived with 2 cute little bottles of spicy mayo sauce for you to squeeze into the bun as you eat it. Inside the baked bun was some ground beef which was a bit dry to be honest. The sauce really made a difference here and enhanced the flavors tremendously. [4/5]

Beefcheekbun ($58) - the beef inside was soft and stringy like those you'd find in a beef stew while the steamed buns were served along with a tomato based sauce for you to dip into. The flavors were exactly as described - just beef stew stuffed inside a steamed Chinese bun. I couldn't quite put my finger on what's wrong with it at first, but perhaps the similar mushy textures of both the bun and beef were unexciting together. It would have been better to pair it with contrasting textures like a crunchy layer. [3/5]

Tomato Mozzarella Veggie Dumplings ($48) - the veggies dumplings looked promising at first glance with the green pesto dumpling skin. Similar to the XLB, the dumpling skin was still too thick but at least tasted better with a hint of pesto flavor. The fillings were chewy and delightful with the melted Mozzarella cheese and juicy chopped tomatoes. [4/5]

HK Egg Lemon Tart ($26) - the egg lemon tart dessert was one of the better dishes we had here! The filling was delectable as it was basically similar to a lemon chiffon pie with tart and light flavors. The pastry shell didn't taste like an HK egg tart though but it was still nice and crumbly to eat. [4.5/5]

Nutella Ball ($20) - I do love Nutella so I had to get this dessert! The hardened Nutella was placed inside a fried sesame ball, and while the chocolate filling was yummy to eat, it didn't gel together with the jin deui as well as I'd thought it would. Both ingredients were just chewy without any contrasting textures - perhaps some chopped hazelnuts inside would have been better. [3.5/5]

Overall, I'd have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the food at MAN MO Cafe. Initially I was very excited to try the fusion dim sum here as some of the creations sounded rather bold like pairing Nutella with fried sesame ball and tomato Mozzarella with dumplings. I was intrigued and wanted to find out if someone had finally succeeded in making fusion Chinese work, but unfortunately they didn't. There's room for improvement such as the fundamentals of dim sum like better dumpling skins and more thought into the textures and flavors of each dish. Fusion is always tricky to do and right now there seems to be a disconnect between the East and West element as the dim sum in its current state doesn't make them better than the original dishes. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Much can be debated on the creativeness of the X-treme Chinese cuisine at Bo Innovation but at least the fundamentals were there and the food tasted good. Yes MAN MO Cafe is a nice place to chill and will appeal to many with its hip and modern decor, but just don't confuse good style with good food.
