I was meeting my gf for dinner and she suggested we go try Oolaa Petite as we have both been to Oolaa many times. It was a Sunday night so rather quiet and we didn't have to wait for a table. They gave us the menu's when we sat down and I asked for the wine list and the server told me they didn't have their liquor license yet and told us we could go to Classified's to buy a bottle of wine and they wouldn't charge us corkage. So no big deal we went over and bought a bottle of wine. But I wish the server would have told us as soon as we sat down instead of me asking if they had a wine list then telling me about the license. The menu is far smaller then the original Oolaa i guess because it is the petite version.

We started off with the pesto chicken salad. Which I must say was probably the best dish of the night, the chicken was nicely marinated in pesto. I thought the salad had a bit too much dressing but the taste was still good. Nice and light salad.

Next was the crab cakes.... This is probably the WORST crab cake I have ever tasted.... I took one bite and couldn't eat anymore it was so fishy and tasted really off. I asked my gf to try it and she agreed that it tasted really off. So we waved the server over and I told her that the crab cakes tasted fishy, she looks at me and says well you ordered crab cakes, yes i am aware at what I ordered. I tell her again that they taste funny, she looks at me irritated and says she will bring it back to the kitchen to check. About 10 mins later she comes back chewing something in her mouth and says the kitchen says it's fine... She was incredibly rude and said that's they way there crab cakes are supposed to taste... I replied you are telling me your crab cakes are supposed to taste like it has gone bad? She rolls her eyes at me and says they will take it off the bill if i want. Her attitude and service is appalling.. I asked to speak to the manager and she replies I am the supervisor.
WOW is all i can say. I didn't want them to spit in my food if I kept complaining so I said yes please take it off our bill.

Since we gave back the crab cakes we ordered something else to replace it. We decided to try the pork lollipops. It tasted like Chinese style BBQ Pork with hoisin sauce. The pork was far too fatty for my liking, also would not recommend this dish.

We ordered 2 mains to share, first to arrive was the Wagyu spaghetti bolognese. I have had this dish before at Oolaa and thought it was pretty good. But this dish was no where near what I had previously had, the portion was rather small and the presentation was not nice. It came with a giant basil leaf on top and the basil leaf didn't look to fresh. The taste was soso... and the garlic bread that came with it was soggy.

Next up was the Glazed soy salmon I asked to have it cooked medium but it came out pretty raw, but at this point i didn't even wanna bother to send it back to the kitchen. The taste of the salmon is not bad would have been better if it was cooked to the temperature i had requested. My gf didn't eat much of it as her tummy is sensitive and she thought it was too raw. The mashed potatoes on the side was nice and creamy.

We sat at the table for awhile and no one came to clear the table, I had to wave down the server's many times and still no one came over to our table. There was one gentlemen standing by the computer screen I'm assuming was a manager he was just starring intently into it for most of the night, pressing on things and never once looking up to see if the customers were doing fine. After about 10 mins someone finally came to take clear our table and I asked for the dessert menu.

We decided to end the meal off with their cheesecake. It came in a bowl and is kind of like a trifle more then a cheesecake, it's an interesting twist. Quite enjoyable but the crumbs were a bit too sweet. We did finish it though slowly nibbling on it while we finished our bottle of wine.

I realize they have just opened but i think the servers need a lot more training and the food also has a long way to go. The service at Oolaa is already mediocre but the service here was just HORRIBLE! I will not be returning here for a long time not even for drinks since they don't have a liquor license.

Oolaa Petite

Hello,

the last arrival of restaurant in Star Street is "Oolaa Petite". I have been traveling and did not had time to try it yet until last night. I went there as I was waiting for my girlfriend to go for dinner somewhere. As i arrived it was early therefore not full and just wanted a drink and internet while i wait. As it happened we will end up having dinner there.
at first they warn you that they do not have the liquor license which was fine with me. I had the mix berry smoothie ($70), it was good and creamy the flavor was good, I would have love it a little bit more chilled but not a big issue.
Once I finished it and was waiting for my girlfriend to arrive (of course she was late... she is a girl!!! right, so no need to panic...
anyway, the waitress asked me i wanted another one, I said no... a minute later I was asked again, I smiled again and say no I was waiting for my girlfriend... well you guessed it, yes?.... I was asked again.. and again.... well they stopped after 4 or 5 times. So lets stop a minute there. I am all for having the service to ask and upscale, it is there job... and in some way i prefer it to the ones that never pay attention your glass is empty, but at some point once or twice i get it but 4-5 times in less than 5-7 minutes is a bit too much unless they were trying to tell me to get out of there... who knows?
My girlfriend finally arrived, and as I was told few hours earlier by a friend of mine that this place was pretty good except for few things, we decided to try it out.
so Oolaa petite, is a great place with a nice seating area in the upper half floor, and few nice high tables, and a large one. the front open completely to the street which is great. Knowing the place that was there before, I would say this is a wonderful change from it and a great place to go if you leave around. overall the service is poor and disappointing at least for our table. the food is good... well as you know, I will always pinpoint details that i liked more or disliked but overall it is good and little to be unhappy about. the atmosphere is ok could be better but they put the music way to high and it was even hard to have a conversation with my girlfriend to the point that i was rushing to leave the place. the wall menu board is high enough to be seen by all, but the lighting is wrong and the reflections on it made it hard to read the menu with ease, i believe this could be adjusted easily by the managers or owners. I regret that garbage bag where taken out while I was seating there at dinner time.... Again can it be taken out before the restaurant is full or after? I agree with the precedent review, the staff do not smile enough, and I would add are disorganized. Once we decided to stay for dinner, we were not offer a table on the upper side, granted it might have been full or booked but could it have been offered or apologized for not putting us there? anyway i do not mind staying on a high table neither did my girlfriend and actually it could be even better more casual kind of dining experience... but then the waiter did setup our table once we chose our food, and OH MY GOD.... seriously ridiculous. the table is small, and as it would appear the plates are big (i do not know it then but the waiter should) and they still inset to put two forks, two knives, spoons, etc..etc... then he came back touch my forks again move them from one side to the other, I mean... Dude.... I am trying to have a conversation here... do it right the first time!!! can you? then the plates come in and we wanted to share the food so they very nicely gave us small plate and put the dinner plate on the middle, although i appreciate it and i think it is the right way to do it, i think in this case considering the table is small we could have do without it. The ice tea ($35) came and was very good. so our plate of bruschetta pomodoro ($75) came in as well as the crab cake ($140), and we had to use the next table as it was no place on our table, luckily no-one sat there. then of course happened what was planned to happened, one of my knife fall. the waiter took it away but never brought me another one. then later i left the table after my appetizer and when i came back not only they took the plates away but also my paper napkin and never brought me another one....
the bruschetta was not great and I was disappointed about it. it is a half slice of a loaf, with tomato and goat cheese. but it was blend and tasteless. no salt, not enough basil if any, no olive oil... really blend. and the size i so big that it is hard to eat and if you take it in your end as you should... everything falls right and left... then they cover it with balsamic reduction which is not bad but not enough to save the dish.
For the crab cake, it is honestly overpriced. $140 for three small crab cakes and it is not even cooked properly. is not right... simply not right. you want to charge me $140... fine but make it worth the money. As my girlfriend say ( and she some kind of crab cake expert... she loves it so much she might have tried it everywhere) "something is missing...." and yes it is true something is missing, again the seasoning was off, and I can not say what it was but something was missing to make it just right. (actually my friend who recommended the restaurant love crab cakes too and told me the same things... "not great").
then we had the Glazed soy Salmon ($180), who was recommended from my friend as being "good and worth ordering" and it is true. it was cooked perfectly, the cauliflower mash was good, right consistency and flavor. the young broccoli were not good nor tasty. the carrot serve with it was good. I think they have some crispy onion or shallots on top of the salmon and that was a great plus to the dish.Definitely order the salmon if you go there. And we had the spaghetti carbonara ($120) with garlic toast... And that really bothered me. As you can see on the picture i took when the plate was delivered, there are no garlic toast. to make sure I did not misread I asked the waitress to hand me a menu to check, she did. and yes .... I was right... but do you think the waitress asked me if everything was ok? did she wonder why i asked for a menu? did I wanted to order something else? no I gave it back couple a minutes later and no.... no questions... no wonders. this is the essence of a service that do not care. they make you think they do but deep down the don't. As I was told one day "don't try to understand just accept it..." I applied it to that case. I did not ask for it either, to avoid any discussion and arguments. although the table next to me as it on their plate... Kind of frustrating though. the sauce was good, it was creamy but not dry, the bacon was not overcooked, I regret the onion to be too raw for me, but many people will like it, so not a fault from the chef at all. the pasta were overcooked but it did not make the dish to be unsatisfying. It is also a dish worth ordering.
nothing in the desserts seems appetizing enough and the music being so loud we decided to leave.
so overall the food is good, few defaults here and there but nothing dramatic. But the service has a lot to improve.

It was sunday night and I was able to find a table there. This is a place for comfort food at a affordable price. The food portion is generous and the taste leans towars americna flavour.

Ceasar Salad - good portion with real anchoves and pancetta. The green is very fresh. It will be perfect if more dressing is provided.

Wagyu beef bolognese -A generous portion of quality ground beef with a tangy tomato sauce. we asked for al dente but the pasta still came out a bit soggy. May be this is how american prefers them.

Dessert- there is no dessert menu except 2 daily items which was not too exciting so we didnt go for it.

Overall, it is a convenient location for friends to gather for some comfort food without breaking your wallet. I was impressed that the waiters didnt push us for mineral waters. The service is alright but it will be more pleasant if they can smile more. Take advantage of the BYOB before they get the liquor license!
