Whenever I ask people where's the best place for spicy Szechuan food, one common answer I always get is San Xi Lou so I came here with my spicy buddies J, W and R for a night of spicy food! As we had made a reservation ahead of time, we were seated right away. We chose to order a la carte dishes instead of hotpot that night as I feel that you can get spicy hotpot at a lot of places but not many places can do Szechuan dishes right.

Marinated Cold Chicken with Peanut in Spicy Sauce (Reg $158) - one of my favorite dishes to get when I eat Szechuan food! The chicken arrived covered in layers of spicy sauce and chili oil. The chicken was very smooth and tender while the sauce was spicy and numbing! The level of spiciness was just right as well - enough to get our adrelanine running but not too much as to overpower the taste of chicken.

Spicy Sichuan Style Stewed Mandarin Fish (Small $288) - another must-have Szechuan dish! We could smell the peppercorn before the dish was set down on our table. A thick layer of Szechuan peppers rested on top of the stewed mandarin fish, noodles, bean sprouts, and pig blood. The mandarin fish was cooked perfectly as it was smooth and flaky. The noodles were surprisingly thicker and chewier than usual, which were tasty to eat as they have fully absorbed the spiciness of the Szechuan peppers! This dish was not as spicy as the one at Golden Valley, but still satisfying overall.

Double Baked Prawns with Pepper in Casserole ($240) - the price for prawns was seasonal which was $30 per prawn with a minimum of 8 prawns. This dish was highly recommended to us by the waiter. When he lifted lid from the bowl, we could smell the strong scent of white pepper right away. The prawns were big and meaty, and since it was double baked, the skin was crispy enough to be eaten as well. The abundant amount of white pepper did not overpower the fresh and sweet flavor of the prawn, instead helping to enhance the taste. It was a different kind of spicy from the Szechuan peppers, but in a good way.

Country Style Deer Sinew ($138) - my first time trying deer sinew which was pretty similar to beef tendon. The deer sinew was soft and tender, and was nicely sauteed in flavorful sauce. We were afraid it may taste gamey at first, but did not detect that at all. An interesting dish to try if you haven't tried deer.

Sichuan Style Sauteed Shredded Asparagus Lettuce ($88) - our veggy dish of the night! The shredded asparagus lettuce was light and refreshing to eat after all that spicy food. The texture was a bit snappy to eat while flavor was slightly sweet. We felt that the lettuce would taste even better if it was drier with less sauce though.

Goji Berries & Osmanthus Pudding ($28) - moving onto dessert! This pudding was cold and refreshing to eat after a night of spicy food. The goji berries were sweet while the aroma of osmanthus was fragrant. A satisfying and solid dessert overall.

Sweet Glutinous Pellets in Rice Wine ($28) - the tiny glutinous dumplings were overcooked and goopy while lacking in the aroma or taste of rice wine. Very disappointing especially since we just had the same dessert that was perfectly executed at Liu Yuan Pavillion.

Conclusion - we were satisfied after a night of delicious Szechuanese food! Most of the main dishes were high-quality and tasty while there could be room for improvement on the dessert front. The service was prompt and helpful especially when we asked the waiter for recommendations. I would recommend this restaurant to people who seek authentic Szechuanese dishes, which could be spicy or non-spicy as well! I saw many non-spicy dishes on the menu so don't be put off if you are someone who cannot eat spicy. Since I saw many tables doing hot pot, I would love to come back to try that next time!

This isn't the most appetizing photo, I'll admit. There's a reason I don't get paid for my food photography. This is a spicy Sichuan dumpling. "Spicy" is part of the name-- it's not actually spicy. The dumpling is however pretty tasty. Juicy, with a nice pork-vegetable balance. If it weren't advertized as "spicy" and if I weren't comparing it to other better Sichuan dumplings (say, at Chili Fagara), I'd give it an A. As such, it gets a B+.

I love chilis as vegetables. I must've eaten 9,000 green chilis on my recent trip through New Mexico. Anyway, these Sichuan chilis in vinegar sauce were a perfect instantiation of what I wanted. I have had this dish better-- but not much better. (mildly spicy) A

The chicken with cashews and chilis was surprising. I'll say up-front that it wasn't spicy. Even eating mouthfuls of those red chilis (and yes, I did that) did not ratchet up the spice all that much. But the chicken was amazing. It was crispy, tender, and spiced with cumin (surprising part) and Sichuan peppercorn. Maybe the best version of this dish I'd ever had. A+

The server asked if we wanted him to skim off the chilis. I declined, but there was some miscommunication and he skimmed them off anyway. I got him to stop most of the way through, and this picture is after, so you can imagine what it must have been like before. However, again, there's not much spice in the chilis, even eating them as I said by the mouthful. However, intermixed with the darker red dried chilis were some smaller, brighter red, fresh (or less dried) chilis that had a searing hot intensity. I think you can see one in the photo-- it's a little to the left of center, and it still has its stem on. BE FOREWARNED before eating one. I had several, but they stopped me in my tracks a couple of times.

I love this dish in general. I had it one time at a restaurant with no English name in Tsuen Wan and it was spectacular. This instantiation was less than spectacular. The fish itself was tasty, but nothing amazing. There were plenty of Sichuan peppercorns thrown in, but the flavor wasn't well incorporated. Every now and again I'd bite one and get this intense bloom of numbing pepper-- it was quite an experience, but I'd prefer it a little less instense, and a little more spread throughout the dish. The bean sprouts in the dish were, I thought, the most flavorful part. It wasn't very spicy EXCEPT, again, those chilis about which I warned you. B+

Looking back, I'm going to give this place an A-. The service was friendly and polite. The food was between "good" and "excellent." I could see myself coming back, even though I don't often return to restaurants, especially ones as difficult to access as this is for me. I don't see why everyone was raving about the spice levels here-- it is spicy, unlike Yunyan; but I frequented Sichuan places in New Jersey with a higher heat level than this. I'm going to have to keep looking around for the Sichuan food of my heart... or maybe just go back to Tsuen Wan.

A-

San Xi Lou was actually an "alternate" booking which was made by my friend as we had originally wanted to go to another restaurant in Wanchai. I was originally skeptical, but my friend said this place was decent. My friend was right and we had a good hotpot experience.

Firstly, I must say, I was quite comfortable with the environment, given that 70% of the guests were expats or non-locals (Japanese, etc.) Clearly, the crowd was very white collar, which gave me comfort since hotpot in Hong Kong can sometimes appear "risky" from a hygiene perspective. In fact, my first impression walking into this restaurant raised the same questions. Not that San Xi Lou was dirty, but it certainly was not spotless either. It is clear that this place was not originally designed to be a hotpot place.

San Xi Lou is located at Coda Plaza on Macdonnell Road. So it is actually very convenient for those of us who live around the Mid-levels. It is not a building which is "cool" or "stylish", in fact, it is just the opposite of that. You have to wait a little bit for the elevator and then it takes quite a while to make it to the 22nd floor given the elevator stops at likely every floor in between.

Once we got there, the reception was not very well organised. Even though we had a reservation, we had to wait for 5 minutes for them to clear a table for us. The receptionist was polite and pleasant and so were the other waiters and staff.

Once we got seated, we ordered pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the soup base took a while to come out (more than 10 minutes). Granted, the restaurant was packed full and you could tell the staff were being stretched. Yet at no point were the staff "exhausted" or "cynical" and they all maintained their composure and followed up on orders when we would follow-up with them.

They were sold out of a number of the fresh seafood items which was not great. But once we got going, the food was good. The Beef was pricey, but well balanced and worth eating. We ordered a lobster, which was good. The geoduck could have been more fresh, but still decent. We ordered the pork and vegetable dumplings, which was very good for a hotpot place. Our soup was a half and half with spice and pear. The spice had just enough kick, but not too much to kill the flavour of some of the other items. The presentation of all the hotpot items was very neat and exuded quality.

Maybe because it was Christmas, but everyone else who were eating there were having a good time. Half the tables were eating some kind of Szechuan spicy dishes, which I imagine is pretty good. Assuming that San Xi Lou can maintain its consistency, I would definitely come again and recommend to any "gwai lo" working in Central or living in the Mid-levels who is looking for a decent hotpot experience.

The first dish that came was Water boiled spicy frog legs, i usually order this dish with fish but thought I give frog legs a try.
WHen they bring the dish it is covered in chilies, and the smell of chilies is very strong. They ask you if you want the to skim away the chilies, as it is impossible to eat with all the chilies we asked them to do so. The pot seemed to be bottomless as we kept eating and it didn't look like it moved at all. It's filled with glass like noodles, bean sprouts, pigs blood and bamboo pith.
The dish also comes with a plate of raw thinly sliced cucumbers i'm guessing to cool your mouth down from the spiciness of the dish.

Next dish we ordered was the spicy chicken directly translated in Chinese as Saliva chicken. Another very flavorful dish but at this point my whole mouth was numb from the frog legs. The chicken tasted very good but i found it to be quite boney not much meat. it was a good change from the very spicy previous dish.

[IMG:2

The jelly noodles with spices and cucumber slices. I thought this dish was only so so kind of bland and the spices tasted a bit too much like the chicken dish. I would not order this dish again.

It's clean, it's very efficient, there's always a good atmosphere there and you can tell it's a great place because people bring their foreign friends there all the time.

One other thing I like about this place is that it seems pretty traditional, they have dishes which are common in most Sichuan/Chinese style restaurants like Ma Po Tofu, but also have a good variety of solely Sichuan style dishes. Great for trying Sichuan out for the first time, as well as for experienced palettes!

I've never really had any complaints about this place, other than it's a little off the grid, and it can get quite busy near the weekends for dinner. The quickest way to get there is to just tell a taxi driver to go to McDonell road and turn left at the ParkNShop. Coda plaza should be next to a parking lot down the slope of 28 McDonell road. Reservations are a good idea if you're bringing people to celebrate, I know I've had quite a few family birthday dinners here.

I'm going to list some of my recommended dishes below, so try them and enjoy!

Other Info. : - Fish head [We always get both the sauces, green chilli and red chilli] - Mandarin fish in chilli oil [There's no way we'll eat here without getting this, make sure you ask them to remove the huge pile of chillies when the dish arrives] - Ma Po Tofu [The best I've ever had] - Double braised pork with garlic shoots [I can't remember the rest of the name] - Minced pork and beans [not spicy, but so tasty]

It´s the second time I´ve been to this restaurant and the service with their walki-talki system is extremly fast. While one waiter is at the table taking your order the other one is processing the order and before you know it your drinks and starters are on the table.

It´s located on the 3 and 22 floor of Coda Plaza and serves tipical Sichuan spicy food. Hot pot is served as well although we did not order it.

We ate Sichuan Spicy Boiled Fish
(extra hot, if you are not a fan of spicy food, order a lot of white rice, it will help). The taste is amazing though. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Sichuan Friend Chicken

Crab with rice vermicelli

Garlic Friend Shrimp with Pepper - RECOMMENDED!

We also had the barbecue pork and chinese vegetables which was a great contrast to the rest of the spicy food we ordered.

Other Info. : Try the Sichuan Fried Chicken with Chilli and the Sichuan Boiled Fish with Chilli (extra spicy!!!)
