Back to reality after a long but not enough vacation. Walked to the SOHO area for lunch and noticed this place, which I passed by so many times before but never tried. The place has an open setting just by the mid-levels escalator, and is a great place to see and be seen.Their set lunch starts at $68, including dessert and coffee. Wow, sounds like a good deal. First came the bread which was great. We ordered:For soup or starter,I didn't try the soup but it looked great with lots of diced mushrooms. The chicken skewer was perfect, grilled to a slight char outside and tender/juicy inside. A great start. For mains,we orderedI didn't try the lasagna nor the linguini but Cat and Qoo said they were good. My schnitzel was super. Schnitzel was a traditional Austrian dish usually made of veal but these days, pork schnitzels were also common. The pork schnitzel served by Shelley was a big, thin slice wrapped and deep fried in bread crumbs, crispy on the outside but tender inside. I decided to ask for 2 pieces of rye bread and made up my own schinizel on rye which reminded me of the dormitory days when we had schnitzel on kaisers for lunch. The lemon butter sauce matched perfectly the schnitzel. We finished off the meal with a nice cup of Lavazza coffee and a minature strawberry mouse.Nice environment, good food (especially the bread and the schnitzel), good service. Will encore. continue reading

Came here on the last day of 2010 for lunch, spontaneously, just because Bologne was closed from Dec31-Jan2. Just our luck! I don't think I would've come here if I realized that it was 'Real Bread Cafe' repackaged. Environment: Same as before. Orange, some high seats, some low, with a stove keeping diners warm despite the semi-open store front. Food:Set lunches are a real good deal, compared with the rest of SoHo. But then...I think you'd be willing to pay a bit more to dine at say, Al Dente, that always serves wonderful food. Spinach and Feta cakes with garlic yoghurt Didn't like this dish at all. First, there's strong herbs inside the cakes, which I don't like, and secondly, the spinach and feta cheese didn't go well together. It was just...weird. Garlic yoghurt...? Couldn't quite taste it dear. The side salad was good though - rocket, raw onions, halved cherry tomatoes. I gave most of my cakes away. Minestrone soupDidn't like this either - both E and M ordered this, but it was too sour for me. Not recommended. Between soup and cakes I'd pick the latter. If you want to take your chances you could go for the chicken and blue cheese salad, which just might be the best of the lot? Heh. Not placing my bet on that though, i don't like blue cheese. Potato dhal with steamed rice, flat bread and chutney The worst thing that happened to me this week. I asked the waitress in advance whether there would be a lot of coriander/parsley in the dish and asked her not to put any garnish. There was no garnish, thank God, but the entire thing was clogged in coriander. couldn't stand it. Did not touch it. I only ate my rice with a bit of the sauce on the side (the garlic cabbage radish puree and the orange/red dip in the middle) which was NOT satisfying at all. The rice was not hot enough and was hard. I prefer chinese/japanese rice. The flat bread wasn't yummy either. I thought it would be more bread-like than this, more doughy. I mean this stuff might be authentic but I just didn't like it, authentic or not. It was very peppery and hot. Didn't expect my bread to taste HOT. I wondered if they added chili! Linguine with chorizo and sundried tomatoes, rocket salad Perhaps this the only dish worth eating. Linguine is cooked al dente, chorizo wasn't too spicy but flavorful, tomatoes were a bit too sour and wet though. I 'd have preferred them drier, sweeter, with a stronger concentrated flavour. A bit too watery but I suppose that's how tomato concasse is. Improvements: replace tomato concasse with sun dried tomatoes, a less watery sauce, and add garlic chips. yumyum I would recommend this dish if you had to pick something from the list. Pan-fried salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus Another fail. Although the portion is very generous, the fish was of poor quality, not very fresh, and I couldn't taste much salmon. I am guessing it even tasted a bit fishy, extremely undesirable. Sigh. Fish must be fresh, period. Fish isn't meant to be cheap. Go get better quality salmon and charge the premium on the buyer. It'll be worth it. And next time, smaller portions please? Bread and Butter Pudding I'm not exactly sure what to call this. I'd say it was a B&B pudding gone wrong. Too chewy and glutinous, solid. BB pudding as I know it should come as an undefined form if plated from a larger bowlful of BB. This one held its square shape too well! BBs should be more vulnerable, ha-ha. Neh. Although this wasn't tasty I enjoyed picking at the raisins, which were plump and juicy. Suggestion: try making BB pudding with croissant next time! Conclusion:Sorry, Shelley. I will not be seeing you again. But I must say something about the Service: and give credit to the staff - they were friendly, addressed us as 'dears', and were all smiles. Pity the food's lousy. continue reading
