As I don't eat chicken, we asked if the Chicken Karage could be replaced with something else and the staff happily subbed it with a Salmon Tataki -- extra brownie points for this! The salmon was slightly torched on the outside, leaving the centre raw. Paired with a piece of pickled daikon on top and ponzu sauce, I overall quite enjoyed this!

It came freshly steamed with a sprinkle of flakey salt -- nothing too special about this, but edamame is a personal favourite food of mine so I was pretty happy to eat this.

Excuse the poor colour tuning (the lighting is pretty awful!). This cabbage salad was coated really thoroughly with a yuzu mayo. Although I couldn't really taste the yuzu in the mayo (it was pretty subtle), we were still quite surprised at how much we enjoyed this. Who knew shredded cabbage and carrots could be this yum!

The hamachi slices were topped with crunchy quinoa and finished off with a ponzu. The combo went pretty well, the ponzu counterbalanced the fishiness of the hamachi quite nicely.

Moving on to the handrolls! We decided to try everything on the set menu starting with the Tuna Hot Dog, which you had to add $20 for. The roll was deep fried and then filled with spicy tuna, served with a bit of mayo on the side. This was definitely my favourite dish of the day (the extra money was worth it!), I'd recommend trying this roll if you're at TMK. 😍

My only comment is that the rice (and this applies to all the rolls) isn't really up to sushi rice standard, it was a bit too soft and wasn't seasoned that well.

The hamachi pieces were lightly marinated, which I thought was quite nice. The handroll itself needed soy sauce to go with it, but we had to ask the staff for a sauce plate rather than have it already be there at the table (it's kind of a sushi bar after all?). What was really strange to me, was the piece of tomato in the sushi roll. As much as I'm all for fusion food, a slice of raw tomato really does not belong in a sushi roll, nor did it add anything special to the fish. A pass from me 😰

This handroll features tuna, scallions and mustard seeds. It wasn't bad, scallions go really well with tuna, was pretty good dipped in a bit of soy sauce.

I think I've already expressed how I felt about tomatoes in a sushi roll, so I don't really need to repeat myself. But for a handroll that features tomato, I was pretty disappointed to see that it was, yet again, just a slice of raw tomato. Would've liked to see it at least be cured, marinated, grilled or just treated in someway. The egg pieces were a bit dry and so were the picked vegetables, which made the whole eating experience of this roll really dry in general. Even soy sauce didn't really improve the taste and texture😭

For dessert, the description said this was a marshmallow tartlet, filled with strawberry ice cream and pineapple. I liked that the pineapple was slightly grilled but was overall really disappointed that the ice cream came melted at the table (see picture), which made it extremely messy and difficult to eat. We weren't even given a fork or spoon so we had to use our hands, both pieces also came on the same plate so we had to share it and have the ice cream drip all over the place. Not really very considerate when putting this together/serving this. And because the ice cream came melted, it made the shell soft pretty quickly. 


Overall, I think TMK would be a great place to spend with friends on a Fri/Sat night, especially if you're into sake. The food has room for improvement but I'm still glad I got to try it as part of a restaurant week deal! 😊

We had been to Honjo upstairs which is also from Pirata Group & we love it. We thought we will try TMK and it was not disappointing, it is fun, nice vibe, good decor, feels like I am in Tokyo. We ordered Korean fried chicken, fried squid, wagyu slices which is also in Honjo and is highly recommended! We ordered beer but later add as free-flow for $190 for 90 min so we had cold sake as well & the sake is really good. Service was also very attentive, we don’t know that we have to give up our 7:30p

From around 9:15pm, the waitress kept asking us if we were ordering more food. We said no we are done with food but still have more sake to finish. Then she came to our table about 3 times since to clean, took away our chopsticks etc. we felt it was a bit odd but still held ourselves together. Then she brought the bill. Then she was back in 2mins

Second, there were empty table around. Third, we were the last table sat down compared to our left and right. We were very pissed off then the manager came to say they made a mistake.
We had a terrible terrible time. Completely destroyed our Saturday night.

Everything just OK, sushi is comparatively good but hand rolls are so so. Don’t treat this a sushi place but a bar with sushi and hand rolls serving. The place is packed, over 90% guests are westerners. Why use a hot sake decanter to service cold sake?Service is not that sincere if comparing with other restaurants under the same group.

再來是色彩誘人的 TMK Salad (HK$78),特別是南瓜片與辣椒脆脆湊合的橙紅色系,與底部荷蘭豆和水菜的翠綠來得剛好,色彩美感已叫我開懷極了!一吃更是叫好,因為 TMK 秘製沙律汁很美味,加上蔬菜的爽口層次,與及由辣椒脆脆引出的刺激感,整體效果來得很完美!

吃過清新怡人的油甘魚和沙律後,不如來點邪惡的!Iberico Kushikatsu (HK$108) 。香脆的外層內是肥瘦相間的黑毛豬肉,肉質有著入口即化的美妙口感,蘸上惹味的辣菠蘿醬該是完美無瑕,然而黑毛豬肉沒經過預先醃製,淡淡的味道與脆皮和醬汁形成不太協調的感覺!

我們愛吃日式炸雞,這道 Karago (HK$78) 是必吃啊!個人覺得 Karago 最出色之處是其醃味,味道令人感受到層次相當豐富之餘,且帶有一股獨特的酸味兒,令柔軟嫩滑的雞肉變得更加吸引,而微辣的乳酪雞醬也是叫好之作!若然問有什麼需要改善?我會選擇將雞皮炸得再脆一點!

突然來了一下巨響,令不少隨著音樂搖曳中的身驅也靜止下來,包括我倆!原來遇上 TMK Drinks on ME (HK$290) 環節,簡單講即是有人萬歲!每位客人可獲一杯清酒,然後一齊舉杯,十足新年倒數時的熱鬧與興奮!

明明說好是手卷店,怎樣還未有手卷呢?來了,TMK 的招l牌 Tuna Hotdog (HK$98) 終來了!這就是手卷?TMK 稱 Tuna Hotdog 是 Tempura Fried Kalifornia,一看外層果然是名符其實的天婦羅式的炸狗,還有加洲卷不可缺的千島醬來應對 Kalifornia!

Tuna Hotdog 看似十分邪惡,但入口乾爽、一點也不油膩,香脆的外層包裹著軟身的米飯,與辣吞帶魚蓉、辣醬汁、脆脆的藜麥和蔥花,味道新奇有趣,而且挺有飽肚感!

Summary: I'm split between respect and disgust, hatred and grudging admiration. TMK is definitely not for everyone, and God save you if you don't eat mayo or fried food. That said, TMK's commitment to theme and a few interesting dishes save it from complete failure. TMK (named for TeMaKi, or handroll) is the casual part of the Pirata group's new Japanese two-headed monster in Sheung Wan. It goes for a rock vibe, and really commits:

I love the colors and casual seating, and the classic/pop rock they pipe through works too.  There's a freaking motorcycle just sitting behind glass. They prepare all the non-fried rolls at the sushi bar, a blessing and a curse as i'll mention below.

One thing, don't order the cheapest sake - it's completely flat in both flavor and freshness. And why are highballs so damn expensive? 

The whole table has to order the same tasting menu (if you go that route), so we both had the Leather set, and added an extra karaage (who can resist fried chicken).

Beef isn't the highest quality, and it's a bit chewy, but really liked the slightly tart ponzu-type sauce, with a bit of heat from the chili oil. The pickled chinese onion works as a crunchy offset, but i think the sauce was acidic enough as it is.

Beautifully fried and juicy,  the breading was the perfect thickness. While the yogurt still tasted a lot like mayo, it was a great cool contrast to the chicken.

My friend didn't like think much of this, but i thought it wasn't bad; the yuzu (i think?) concoction on top helps wake up the traditionally sleepy, oily hamachi. The sushi technique was surprisingly good too - not heavy-handed with rice or over-pressed.

A tasty combination of ingredients - cucumber and sea grapes along with the mayo and soft shell crab; but the crab was over-fried, and that over-cooked crunch kinda kills any subtlety the other ingredients bring. My friend's comment was that the over-frying kills any taste of crab there might have been - does soft-shell crab ever have any flavor though?

A deep-fried crab-mayo rice roll cut open, stuffed with spicy tuna mayo, topped with seaweed and crunchy bits, then dressed with EVEN MORE MAYO. I think the description speaks for itself, but I will say that the deep fried roll is done pretty well, and the additional crunch makes this monstrosity ALMOST work. Unfortunately, as we were at the bar, I watched the sushi chef dump an incredible amount of mayo in just for the spicy tuna mix, and then proceed to douse the finished product with even more. As someone a bit ambivalent on mayo in general, this was too much for me to handle, but i can imagine some people really digging this dish.

Ice cream - their shaved ice machine is broken so the kakigori was replaced by green tea/red bean and candy toppings. Sure, it's fine.

Overall, this place is the definition of "your mileage may vary." Did i enjoy the food? not really. Did i like the meal though? Kind of.

They work hard to make it fun - at like 9:45 they bought a round of sake for everyone (the sake i mentioned above - works as a shot i guess), and as i mentioned, the decor, music and food combine to make a lively experience. The food though, is really heavy (the tuna hotdog is nightmare fuel ) and the non-fried stuff is pretty nondescript. You shouldn't be coming here to eat regular sushi or sashimi, let's put it that way.  It's not particularly expensive though - it came out to just over $1000 for the two of us with 1-2 drinks each, and quite a bit of food, so it's not a huge investment to try. 

If you're into fun/loud restaurants, crazy sushi rolls covered in obscene amounts of ingredients (read: mayo) and deep-fried food, then friend, do I have a place for you. If not, then you don't need to try TMK.
