I thought the restaurant was awful. Their baked spaghetti bolognese had gone bad and smelled like feet. I had to spit it out in my napkin. The waitress told me it was because I was not used to the taste of fresh tomatoes! ????They then charged me $42 for my iced tea and the lemons were dirty. No wonder there was only one other table dining there at 7:30pm. continue reading

My uncle was heading back home to the US, so we decided to treat him to a farewell dinner, and he picked Queen's Cafe.Queen's Cafe is one of those old school "soy sauce Western restaurants" that can always bring back childhood memories for my parents' generation.Even though the Queen's Cafe in Lee Theatre is a revived version of the restaurant, the decor still maintained an old timey feel.  I made the reservation a few days before for the 7 of us, but the restaurant was not completely filled on a Sunday night. After perusing the menus, I decided to order the duck breast set dinner.Soon after, the waitress served the bread and butter. The bread is the typical soft sweet roll which was warm when it was served. The Borsch is one of the most praised items from this restaurant, and it's no surprise.  The soup was filled with plenty of vegetables, and it was very flavorful, which is unlike the watered-down red soups you'd get from a char charn tang.I forgot to take a photo of the Fresh Garden Green Salad, but it was just a simple salad with fresh veggies and salad dressing. When my main course was served, I was overwhelmed by its size!  There were two duck breasts on my plate, and I'm used to only getting one when I order Duck a l'orange!Magrel De Canard Au Orange with Seasonal Vegetable: The duck breast was tender and cooked medium rare.  The sauce was a little runny for my liking.  I'm not a fan of potato wedges, so they were ok.  I had a choice of fried potatoes, spaghetti, or rice, but I chose potatoes anyway because I don't think duck breast goes with spaghetti or rice.To finish my meal, I ordered an iced lemon tea, which was normal, so nothing really to write home about. For a $250 set dinner, the portion was larger than I expected, and the food quality was not bad.  But I think the major reason people come to Queen's Cafe is for nostalgic reasons more than the food. continue reading

Queen’s café represents is one of the older “soy sauce Western cuisine” restaurants, with its original store opened in 1952. I‘ve always been a fan of the one in Festi, so when I heard that they have a branch opened in Causeway bay, I couldn’t wait to come try it. There are currently 5 branches in total and one of them is in Beijing! As soon as you walk in, the nostalgia décor immediately takes you back a few decades, I could almost hear the legendary “Shanghai Night” song playing in my head; slow decorative celling fan disrupting the dim lighting in the dining room, giving an illusion of flickering candle lights. There is plenty of space between tables/ booths for privacy; and it was a quite night so it felt even more romantic! I loved it already as soon as I step foot in the door.I was very happy to see that they have most of the same items from the Festi store, so we got a few familiar items for dinner. First of all their signature Borscht soup, the consistency is much thicker than I remembered, also richer in flavor; this version is not spicy at all, so I needed a little bit of white pepper, it was perfect. I would say they serve one of the best Borscht soup in Hong Kong.Mains were Sirloin steak and baked Spaghetti Bolognese; I asked for 60% as the temperature of my steak, and it was spot on! Gravy sauce which comes on the side was a pleasant surprise! Heavy in beef flavor, almost like a thickened beef au jus, but the steak was well marinated on its own already. Potato wedges were seasoned well, hot and crispy too.Baked Spaghetti Bolognese was served in a stainless steel container, and it was boiling hot when it was served to us! I love my food served hot~ the taste is quite different from the one served in Festi’s branch; this one tasted more like homemade spaghetti Bolognese, with the kind of pre-made sauce that we can buy from grocery stores. It was a slight disappointment that it is different from the taste I was expecting, however, having that said, it was still tasty.Queen’s café has always been one of my favorite soy sauce western style restaurants, there’s something comforting about this cuisine to me. I am so relived to know this branch in Causeway bay is just as good; another great dinner option in a convenient location. continue reading

continue reading
