After voting (September 2012), we went here for lunch out of curiosity and convenience. We've lived around Hung Hom for quite a while but never tried here. Perhaps we didn't really know what to expect from Sagano. The result was quite pleasant:

We were greeted by the polite waitress dressed in kimono and shown to our table by another polite waiter.

Service was good throughout the whole meal. You might have to chase up your meals though, just in case.

Decor:

The whole place was very spacious and quiet. The decor was clean, bright and elegant.

It was divided into a number of sushi bar areas, a few large tatami areas next to the windows as well as a large amount of normal table seats.

We sat at one of the sushi counters.

Wide selections:

To my surprise, the lunch menu was pretty comprehensive!

They had at least 20 different types of set lunches which ranged from different grades of sushi sets, different sashimi sets, tempura sets, soba, udon and even sukiyaki.

What each sets consisted of was fairly complicated, some included vegetable salad, some included sesame tofu salad, some did not include salad, some included soba/udon...etc. so make sure you check the small prints. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to read the menu as you won't feel rushed at all.

About HK$250~$400 per set.

My father ordered a sashimi set, my wife ordered a sukiyaki set and I ordered a tempura set.

We waited for quite a while (about 20 minutes) until all the sets arrived. As far as I could remember, they have a pretty comprehensive drink list with a large amount of sake. Exercising more restraint during daytime, I only ordered a beer.

Sushi set:

(I forgot to take a photo of this.) Pretty decent sushi, 8 types of shimi and akami , a smaller version of the tempura set (2 shrimps, eggplant and pumpkin) and a bowl of udon in a warm broth.

The quality of the tempura was similarly good as mine. The udon was in a clear and pretty aromatic dashi/shoyu broth. I seemed to remember trying a little bit. The udon was nice and chewy.

My father was very happy with his lunch.

Sukiyaki: The set came with a huge bowl of sukiyaki!

My wife was happy about the quality of the beef, tofu and substantial amount of greens of the sukiyaki.

It also came with a small sashimi. Not exceptional but at least she did not have any complaints.

My wife really liked the Miso Soup included in the set and also the Chawan Mushi (steamed egg with dashi)

The egg was smooth and was flavourful with the fish broth. The quality of the scallop was very good. Big and fresh:

Tempura set:

The salad with the ponzu sauce was just average quality.

But the tempura was good:

The set consisted of the following:

A bowl of Japanese rice;

Tsukemono (pickled items);

Miso Soup: Good miso soup with a lot of daikon (essentially similar to a tonjiru);

Small sashimi: Three pieces of white bodied fish (shimi) and three pieces of red bodied fish (akami). This was just average. Interestingly, those used for the sushi seemed better than those used for sashimi.

Steamed Egg (Chawan mushy): reasonable with yuzu, scallop & parsley , coffee or tea, ice cream

Of course, the tempura:

Three shrimps: Very good shrimp taste. The batter was thin, crispy and not too oily. Very good. Bigger and more flavourful than those provided at Sen Tsuru 千鶴 and Take no Sato 竹の里 in the area. As good as, if not better than, The Yuu (灣仔)一遊 and Ana Gura 穴藏 at Central. Very good! Having said that, the four restaurants I just mentioned all do pretty good tempura in my opinion.
;

Eggplant: Very good quality eggplant with a firm texture and fresh taste;

Pumpkin: good, pretty sweet. Again, not too oily;

Kisu: A small white bodied fish usually used for tempura or frying. The kisu was a bit dry but the quality was decent;

Siso leaf: Very nice and tangy taste.

All in all, a very satisfying lunch for the price and the quality.

The third satisfied customer!

Conclusion:

Decent service. Very good decor. Spacious.

Price is reasonable for the whole setting and the quality of the food.

Don't expect too much for sashimi but the cooked food seemed generally decent.

Good for a filling lunch in an elegant setting.

Recommended.
