My first time to try congee hotpot and my friend recommended this place to me. For those who doesn't know your way around Tsuen Wan, Grandpa's Porridge Shabu Shabu is closer to Tsuen Wan MTR than Tsuen Wan West Station. My first time to try congee hotpot and my friend recommended this place to me. For those who doesn't know your way around Tsuen Wan, Grandpa's Porridge Shabu Shabu is closer to Tsuen Wan MTR than Tsuen Wan West Station. We walked from Tsuen Wan West Station and took us about 15mins. Reservation was made but when we arrived the table was not ready. After 20mins, sofa seats table was ready. The table is very spacious for two.

It took us a long time deciding which hotpot menu to try. Menu price range from $128, $198, $268 and $328. In the end, we chose $198 per person menu. $198 menu includes lobster, abalone, crabs, fish, chicken and pork bone. We added $30 for unlimited order of food (there are 52 kinds of food to choose from ranging from seafood to meat to vegetables to dessert).  The utensils provided is considerate for customers....silicon utensils
 .

After we placed order, the congee pot came in about 15mins. The service is very attentive as the waiter placed the lobster, abalone, crabs, fish, chicken and pork bone into the congee pot...and set a timer. Lobster and abalone was so lively!....it was moving!
I never thought they would serve fresh seafood...will spread this word to my friends! The waiter came over once the timer rang and he stirred the congee...making sure it was not burnt. The seafood tasted very fresh.  After we finished the seafood, we tasted the congee, so sweet! The congee absorbed the seafood sweetness. Congee was not thick (like cotton texture) and you can taste no MSG was added.

即炸紫菜響鈴

I have never seen such a long 響鈴! (Too bad I forgot to take a photo to compare my arm.) It is about 15cm long! What surprised us is that there's seaweed inside the 響鈴. The 響鈴 is very soft, non-greasy and the seaweed gave it a special texture. In normal hotpot places, I would eat 5 響鈴 to feel satisfy but in here 1 is enough.

Handmade Balls

I love how restaurants prepared their own balls instead of the frozen ones. Handmade balls are more healthy and the texture is chewy. Ordered 3 kinds of handmade balls: Beef, Fish Paste and Pork. All the handmade balls is so chewy with enough flavoring. However, we both don't really like to fish paste one because there are a lot of mini fish bones.

We also ordered a lot of other food to try like beef (meat is juicy and tender), vegetables (a good match with the congee), mushrooms, pork etc. Unlike normal hotpot, it takes a longer time for the food to cook because we are using congee to cook food instead of water. The waiter came over to add congee water....in the end, the congee is very liquid. My friend said the other congee pot he went, they did not add congee water in it and the congee was still thick afterwards. As I did not try other congee pot restaurants, I cannot compare.
