It was a new year and it had been a long time since a whole group of our friends could gather together for dinner. We decided on Chinese and that was 鳳城酒家 (English name: Fung Shing Restaurant). A restaurant we always could rely on for good food. Deciding on the Sheung Wan branch, we decided it had moved just a block away. The actual restaurant is down in the basement area. The space is very large and spacious. Good for huge banquets. It was also stylishly decorated, classy without looking old fa
Menu is in English and Chinese with photos of most of their offerings. Only the seafood of the day was in Chinese. I assume it was too difficult to translate but that I assume you can ask and they'll have someone to help out. To me, it's quite impressive as the previous menu was mostly in Chinese. As there was a big group of us, we ordered a number of items to share.
Signature Prawn Toasts ($26 each) is a must order whenever we come here. You really can't think of any other appetizer to start with. You can now order per piece which is great as some people may not want to have one so you're not stuck with an extra. Always fantastic as you get one big whole piece of prawn on top of a crispy slice of fried bread. Not a minced prawn paste like most places. The prawns were fresh, firm and very crispy. The Crispy Fried Calamari ($78) was the other snack and this was moorish. I think that is when the boys cracked open some beer. They were all tentacles in a thin crisp batter. Not over cooked and perfectly seasoned. Crispy Fried Tofu Bricks ($68) was another item that went well with beer. The tofu were small cubes, soft in the center with a crispy exterior that was well seasoned with salt and pepper. After appetizers, we entered into mains. This is the Pan Fried Prawn Cake With Egg ($148). It looked just a flat omelette but hidden underneath it was filled with plenty of fresh prawns. The egg was not over cooked and was super thin. Mandarin Fish Rolls ($368) was my favourite. An item I don't recall on their previous menu. The fish was rolled with mushroom and bamboo shoots giving it a crunch and a hint of umami. The fish was firm and held together well. A lot of work went into this. There were pieces of deep fried fish bone, showcasing that everything could be used. Lined with savory broccoli. Shunde Lettuce Wrap With Diced Pork ($148) was also interesting. A bit salty, you wrap this with lettuce leaves. The mince was well seasoned with bits of crunchy shoots. Steamed Vegetables With Preserved Veggies ($118) was our vegetable dish. A bit spicy from the preserved vegetables used. An interesting balance of fresh and preserved that went well. Stir Fried Milk with Egg White ($128) is a classic that I love here as there aren't that many places in Hong Kong that do it like this any more. Most places just freeze the milk into balls and deep fry it. But actually stir frying milk into thin strands is not easy. But this place does it right. Not oily but soft and fluffy. Traditional Peking Duck ($388) is something they had new on the menu. We had never seen it before and decided to give it a try. It apparently is only available at this branch. The staff wheel it out and slice it in front of you. How refreshing as the last place I had Peking duck, it was all pre-sliced and I started to wonder if this is the case for all restaurants now. The duck was delicious. Skin was thin and crispy. A small amount of meat was included that was moist and tender. Signature Deep Fried Chicken ($328) is also a must order when we come here. The chicken is so good. Crisp thin skin that isn't too fat. The meat is so juicy. Everything is so well seasoned, you don't even need to dip it in the seasoning salt that is provided. Sweet And Sour Pork ($138) was surprisingly presented when it arrived. The deep fried pork was on one side and the sauce? It was served in the pineapple. So basicaly, you take some pork and dipping it in. Like a fondue. It was fun. The pork was a bit on the big side but it was still juicy. We ended with dessert of Signature Baked Pudding ($38 for small size). Small as some people don't want to share and it looks cute in this pot. But don't fret for those with parents or grandparents who are used to their large size portion. It's still available so they can fight over it like always. Still one of the best in town. Not overly sweet with gooey and warm. Some of my friends didn't want the pudding and opted for Steamed Red Dates Cake ($38) as their dessert. Not to sweet with a strong taste of the red dates. Wobbly and warm.
It seems the new restaurant is a reflection of the direction they are moving into. A classic old restaurant with a new modern look that isn't too gaudy. The dishes are both classic and solid with a few twists to make it fresh. It's good that they continue to keep their standards throughout all the years.
