I went on a hike with a good friend on the Dragon’s Back a few Saturdays ago, and we thought it would be nice to take a little detour over to Stanley for a good lunch after the morning workout.

By the time we got there, it was almost 2 in the afternoon, but the open plaza area was still crowded with queues for the gelato shop and the restaurants around the plaza were almost all full. Classified, being more price competitive, still had a couple tables left, so we went in.

Looking around, it seems as if most of the customers having lunch were tourists coming in to the south side with family. As it was very busy, the staff were not particularly welcoming. They made an effort to sit us down and get us some water, but soon disappeared and never returned. We waved hopelessly at the attendants, hoping to catch their attention, but it wasn’t until about 15 minutes later that our orders were taken. Understandable, I suppose, on a Saturday, but perhaps it would be better to have more staff attending on the weekends.

We ordered a mozzarella and tomato salad—my favorite dish ever. Mozzarella also happened to be my friend’s favorite, so we could share. We also ordered a Classified burger and Mac and Cheese (or Three Cheese Macaroni). All of these are what I usually love. As it was three weeks ago, I don’t quite remember what exactly the mistake was, but the staff waiting our table got one of our orders wrong, so our wait was further lengthened.

Mozzarella salad was not as I imagined. I imagined big slices of fresh mozzarella sandwiched between tomatoes, finished with a dash of pesto/basil vinaigrette. It turns out that they serve tiny mozzarella halves and cherry tomatoes instead, and the mozzarella was very sad in portion. We were greatly disappointed and had to fight for the last few pieces. Nonetheless the seasoning and flavors were all good. I just wish there was more mozzarella.

Burger was okay, but the patty was strangely compact and lacking in flavor. I like that they serve red onion with the burger, as I still think that they are the key to any delicious burger, but the meat was not impressive. Fries were good and crispy, but I prefer the thinner variety.

Mac and Cheese was the least impressive of all. The chef must have forgotten to season the food, and the cheese must have been 99% processed cheese, because there was no savory flavor. The top layer seemed detached from the macaroni (which was hard, undercooked and unseasoned). We thought the dish would be more appropriately named ‘mac and flour’.

We were really sad. As the restaurant has decent reviews in the past, I might come again and see whether that was just a very unlucky day for us.
