Black as Chocolate has been the talk of the topic in town recently, maybe due to the fact that their cake was almost similar to another popular cake chain, Aw** Chocolate. After doing some research did i realise that it was opened by Stella Huang, who took up the Taiwanese franchise for Aw** Chocolate. Friends of mine has tried black as chocolate and has positive reviews of it, thus i decided to give it a try to see if it deserves all the praises upon it. It has just opened another outlet in Tai Koo, and since i was passing by, i decided to pay them a visit.
It was conveniently located inside Eslite Spectrum book store at Cityplaza, just in front of the entrance. It was not a shop by itself, more like a counter by itself. Shop was decorated in classic black & white theme.
Menu was a simple 4 choices of choclate cake ranging from classic chocolate cake, blackcurrant strawberry cake, caramel banana chocolate cake & hazelnut chocolate cake. Price ranges from $368 to $418. They do sell other flavours too, subjecting to seasonal requirements.
Customers are allowed to choose between fork or spoon for the purpose of consuming. It was packaged nicely in a small plastic box. Plates and knife were provided as well, for easy usage.
Customers were allowed to choose their own preferred colours of ribbons to tie to the box, with black, purple, red, yellow & pink as the colours.
After some deliberation over choosing the flavours, i decided to go for hazelnut flavour in the end, with purple ribbon as my choice.
Chopped hazelnut flakes were placed on top of the cake for decoration purpose. There are also hazelnut flakes in between the cake, making it very crispy when consuming too. Cake was very rich in chocolate and moist. The staff advised me to wait for 15 minutes after taking it out from the fridge, so as to allow it to soften a little. Chocolate literally melts in my mouth. As of now, they only sell 6 inch size, just enough for 3 to 4 people. Their pricing was generally on the high side, even though it was well compensated by the ingredients they use.
