Chicken hotpot is something made popular in Mainland China where you put cooked chicken in a big pot, eat it then pour your hot pot soup mixing it with all the chicken marinade and juices and hotpot away.
During the day, this place is a cha chan teng. But at night, they serve chicken hot pot. Regular price is around $250 per person for all you can eat and unlimited soda and beer. Soda and beer were located in a very cold fridge and a good selection of the basic soda varieties. Always stocked. Always full. The beer was some brand called Valor and upon closer inspection, it was from San Miguel. Probably aimed at the mainland China market?
While waiting, they gave us appetizers. Chilled cucumber, pickled pork, spicy long beans. They appetizers had a nice crunch though the cucumber was a bit bland.
Then they put this big pot of chicken and turned on the flame! For a two people set, we were given half a chicken but wow! We had a lot of chicken! And it was really good though a bit too salty for me. Boyfriend likes food more salty and thought it was perfect. After we devoured the chicken, I was already feeling half full. Since it was hotpot, we ordered a few balls, beef, veggies, tofu. The usual hotpot goodness.
When the elderly waiter noticed we were done eating our chicken, he came over with two jugs of chicken soup and poured one jug in. Gave it a mix and turned up the flames. Told us to eat hearty and be careful of getting hurt by the hotpot and came back with our hotpot food selections.
The hotpot selections were placed all together in two plates. Veggies in one. Meat in other. Nice separation of food that should be cooked longer and those not as long. The veggies were fresh and the meat was ok as far as Chinese hotpot places are. They gave portions for two people but it was still a lot compared to other places. It was so much, we couldn't order more!
I'm unsure if there's an English menu as everything was in Chinese and boyfriend did all the ordering but three Caucasians came in as we were leaving. The elderly waiter rushed over, greeted them in a friendly manner and explained in fairly decent English they served chicken hotpot, all you can eat and drink. I was pretty surprised the waiter's English was so good and this place didn't shy away when a Caucasian came in as most places tend to do. We were leaving so unsure how these people ordered or if they did have an English hotpot menu. We also noticed that another group of 6 had a chicken pot that was filled to the brim with chicken! Most other places don't do give you this much chicken! No matter how many people you have.
Will return but next time with more people as two people was just too much food.
